I ran into a very good guy who happened to be a sheriff in Virginia back in the late 80s early 90s when I was a teenager. After a guy assaulted my mother he took me aside and told me that in that county they have a lot of hunting accidents and for the first offense it was a $500 fine and they won't take your gun. Then he said "if he come back, if I were you, I would take him hunting in the woods out back".

The downfall of the Comanche began with the introduction of the revolver back in the 1840's. Captain John “Jack” Coffee Hays, by himself and armed only with a single shot rifled musket and two revolvers took on a small war party of Comanche at Enchanted Rock just north of Fredericksburg Texas. The Comanche had a tactic where they'd sacrafice 3 warriors to get you to shot your 1 musket and two pistol shots, then they'd swarm you. This Texas Ranger captain used that to his advantage, he fired 3 shots, the Comanche then charged him and he unleashed 10 more shots at them. It stunned them so badly they hunkered down waiting to get him in the dark of night. This allowed him to escape up and over Enchanted Rock. Several Comanche died that day with the Texas Rangers taking no loses.

Right so one thing I really love to talk about is how the King Tiger, on top of it's already mountain of problems, had it's turret reverse tied to the engine rpm rather than it's own motor so in order for a king tiger to turn it's turret at any decent speed it would have to rev it's engine hard and basically announce it's position to anyone in a 1-5 mile radius depending on environment.

1:23:39 Just a note on that fresh water thing; the journey of Lewis and Clark is pretty significant in MT and just since then we’ve had marshes develop in areas that, according to their journals, were dangerous because of how dry the area was. The opposite has also happened where there was once a large pond that’s now a silt flat. So with how fast the environment can change in a very inland area you’d have to do some in depth soil sampling across entire regions to get an accurate picture of water tables through history.

I’m a competitive horse archer and it’s such a specific skill set and is very tedious to learn in a lot of ways. Spent two years training my horse to be able to do everything on his end (speed changes, turns etc) based strictly on my voice and body language so I never have to touch the reins, then I separately taught myself instinct shooting in archery and got the muscle memory down to the point that I broke a world record for speed. Still hold that record. Then I spent a few weeks getting my horse introduced to and comfortable around the equipment and the sounds, and after that I was finally able to start shooting from horseback. By then you have to be able to read your horse’s movements to keep your arms steady, be aware enough of your own body language to know what you’re signaling to your horse and accurate enough with your arrows to hit the target. It’s a ton of fun and it’s not horribly difficult to do, but it takes countless hours of repetitions to be able to build up the individual pieces to it and piece it all together. Your horse is your battle buddy, so the trust you build and have to have in your horse is incredible. Super super therapeutic to go out and be able to be on the exact same wavelength as this massive beast without ever even having to say a word.

On your conversation about officer discretion: Last month, the lady and I were driving down to the big hippie college town here in OH, and I completely fucking blew a stop sign I didn't see til the last second. State trooper lights us up, I pull over, dude walks up with a big ol shit eating grin, asks what's up with the blatantly idiotic thing I just did, takes our IDs, comes back and gives us better directions, sends us on our way, definitely aware what I'm gonna get on the ride home and rest of the evening is far worse than any ticket. “The town that didn’t see anything,” where the asshole was shot in front of 60-75 people, was actually in Missouri. Specifically Skidmore Missouri. Everyone, all the generations that live there, know who did it, but silently all refuse to say who. Honestly, that kind of tightness in a community can be hard to find and it’s nice to know it’s still out there.

Just to throw this out with draw weight Draw weight is not the only thing that defines the shootability of a bow. I had two 50# recurve bows and a 55# Longbow. Out of the three the 55# longbow was FAR easier to draw than the recurves but the recurves had a higher FPS with similar sized arrows. There is a lot at play when it comes to the draw cycle of a bow, riser design, limb design, materials, arrow weight etc.

Here's the thing about the sword discovered in the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor (Qin Shi Huang): there were originally far more swords because the terracotta army soldiers all had real swords (for realism) that were stolen by graverobbers. The sword (and other weaponry such as arrowheads) discussed here was indeed in pristine condition and still sharp, but it was not due to metallurgy. A 2019 paper showed that a thin layer (10-15 microns thick) of protective chromium dioxide covered the weapons and played a protective role for over 2200 years, and that this was not an intentional process but rather due to contamination from nearby lacquered items; moreover research has suggested that the slightly alkaline pH and small particle size of the tomb site's soil played the primary role in weapon preservation.

There actually were ways to fight horse archers that were developed, particularly in Eastern Europe. Namely, you'd have a decoy force and an assault force, with the decoys being heavy infantry with shields and polearms alongside archers. When the horse archers arrive and start circling counter-clockwise due to how they'd hold their bows, you'd send in the assault force consisting of heavy cavalry and lancers and they would circle around clockwise, ideally so they'd slam head on with the horse archers, though it's more likely they would be chased off and scattered. This was one of the things that the famous Winged Hussars became known for, among other things. So, for people playing Total War, Mount and Blade, or other medieval game where you need to fight horse archers, keep this in mind.

Archeologists always know when the guy they dug up was an archer due to bone deformaties since they trained from little to yeet arrows with a war bow. They can 100% tell that this was an archer .

Yep. And it's not minor differences, if you google it the shoulder deformation is so prominent and anyone can recognize it after having it pointed out once. There is significant skeletal changes. If you've never shot a bow before, you're going to be so embarrassed the first time you try. It's a set of muscles that you don't really do much with

1:41:47 I was 17, me and the boys went to a walking trail went halfway down the trail went off into the woods to this picturesque pond and blazed down. Not a minute after we put the piece away a cop walked up on us, told us we couldn't be there and escorted us back to the car park. The entire time he was making jokes about us smoking weed. Asked why our eyes were so red. Saying there must be some skunks burrowing near the trail. He was a cool dude, could've arrested like 5 of us. I'm certain he was standing there waiting for us to put the bowl away before he made himself known.

Another small correction to Nic is that there were indeed several pharaohs that were mummified, then buried beneath the pyramids in a burial chamber (it's technically beneath the pyramid but still part of the actual structure itself). Although, I certainly can't speak on their conductivity! :D
