Guys thank you all for your support! I'm trying to form a case against GoPro on behalf of everyone effected by this issue, please join r/GoProScrewedMe and share your story, or just "join" and follow to stay informed. When we build enough cases I will seek legal representation. Currently awaiting the first post on there, so if you've been affected by this, or the swollen battery please post on r/GoProScrewedMe

Glad i never trusted fully the waterproof until 10 meter statement, and always used the scuba diving case, that worked nice, tested until 40 meter for now
@snells-window
@snells-window 3 месяца назад
They should never be marketed as waterproof. I started with the gopro 1 and 3 so was used to always using a dive case. Now with the 7 and 10 I continue to ALWAYS use a dive case, even the $20 ebay ones do the trick for me in shallow water. The gasket on the dive case is much more substantial and requires firm pressure to close the case, I've never had one leak. I had 2 brand new Olympus Tough TG4's leak in water less than 1m deep after less than 4 minutes submersion. I had my doubts about the gasket on those before use and that was confirmed. I saw the same setup on the new gopros, so decided to never use them underwater without a housing. All 4 gopros still working fine, I love them, and never had any issues except with SD cards. With the poor gasket sealing, I think the problem is also exacerbated by people jumping etc with their cameras, which, even at the surface, possibly creates shock water pressures greater than those at which the camera is "allegedly" rated to at 33ft.

They should honer the warenty given its supposed to be waterproof. Saying it was probably user error seems shady without at least inspecting it. Not trying to blame here more thinking about the root cause. Was the battery swolen before it broke? That might have pushed on the door enough to cause the the gasket to not seal.

Just giving this 3rd thoughts after your comment: What if the first time leak people had swollen batteries right out the box/ after the first charge/ during the first use? That could explain it. I suspect if we could somehow extract temperature data there would be a correlation

GoPro is a big show business. I had problems from the beginning, agree with your analysis - other deficiencies not to mention. Cannot join a class action suit as a foreigner, but in this sophisticated technologies chances are low.... inherent risk of high tech etc. Forget it, but the more people learn about the GoPros by videos like yours, the better - and they will do what I did: try cheaper stuff - in my case the Lamax Series from Czech Republik is doing great at less than half price, easier to use also. Let the freaks go Pro.

The warranty for the EU does not include the disclaimer.... this is the warranty that applies to the Uk and rest of the world...... Damage resulting from use, accident, or normal wear and tear is not covered by this or any warranty. GoPro assumes no liability for any accident, injury, death, loss, or other claim related to or resulting from using this product. In no event shall GoPro be liable for incidental or consequential damages relating to or resulting from using this product or any of its parts. Because of possible user resealing errors, this product is not warranted against water housing leakage or any resulting damage. This is the same paragraph from the EU warranty page..... Damages deriving from the use or from an accident or caused by natural wear and tear do not fall within this guarantee or other guarantees. GoPro denies any responsibility deriving from incidental or consequential damages caused by misusing the products or its components. The guarantee does not cover the loss of the box and the damages which can derive from such loss, and this is because of potential errors made by the users in closing. Please read and follow carefully the instructions for the hermetic closure of the boxes. One benefit for being in the EU

I would love for this to be true for EU residents, and I believe you that it's written that way. The reality of GoPro's *interpretation* is that the local law does not apply to them as they are an American company (this is according to multiple reviews I've read whilst researching the sequel to this video). I will try to find the exact quote for either the next video or the one after. This water leak issue is the tip of the iceberg as far as GoPro goes!

GoPro advertises it's "waterproof" to 10 m, "ultra-rugged" and "built to take a beating" next to pictures of it being used with diving equipment underwater without a case. Yet that gasket looks like it's out of a water *resistant* smartphone rated to 1.5 m for 30 minutes. I suspect the gasket in this design doesn't solely rely on the landing area for the gasket to seal but also the walls of the recess so yeah that little missing bit in the corner isn't going to give good compression, seems like an oversight they made in order to make the unit 1 mm smaller. And putting ferrous and dissimilar metals on the outside of the sealed envelop is pretty counterintuitive, the manual does say you have to wash it in fresh water after use in non-fresh water but still you're not going to get everything out of the mechanism, seems like a design not meant to last. Either way excluding water damage in the limited warranty is standard practice in the United States of America. And umm... the bad news... You seem to reside in the United States of America so unfortunately this means you will have had to agree to the mandatory binding arbitration and class action waiver and have waived a lot of your rights in order to buy and use the camera in the USA, you probably can't sue or form a class action against GoPro without a lot of effort and money, sorry, but good luck.
@RichWithTech
@RichWithTech 3 месяца назад
You've made some good point there. Regarding method of sealing I was thinking to cut the door in half which would enable cross section viewing of how the gasket interacts with the rest of the design, what do you think? In ref to consumer rights I believe there are political routes outside the US which have the potential to hold companies accountable. Your luck is appreciated and I will indeed need it!

There is also a problem, currently, where if you leave the GoPro connected to a Mac computer with the GOPro QUIK desktop app launched, the GoPro seems to continue to build heat for some reason, I have bloated multiple batteries this way. by leaving the GoPro connected to a computer with USB and the quik app importing files or something. If you leave it connected, even after the import is finished, the GoPro seems to continue to build heat for some reason, Ive ruined several batteries and SD cards because of this problem. Good video man. I had my HERO 11 bite the dust (or should I say water) only hours after bringing it for its first dip in the ocean. GoPro support did ultimately replace my camera for free, but I think it was mostly because they looked up my email and saw my tech videos - up until that point the support was blaming me, saying it was user error and that you need to properly close the door whenever going in the ocean. Appreciate you providing your insight into gasket design. Which model GoPro is it that you have here? I’m guessing 9 or 10 but couldn’t get a good glimpse of the side? I’m gonna take a look at my 12 when I get a minute to see if they did any redesign cause the 12 has fixed a decent amount of the other headaches introduced by the 9, 10 & 11s.

It's a 9. Please do let me know about your 12. Would love to know if they changed the design at all. Also interesting they changed tune after seeing your email- I've read a lot of horror stories where they did not honor the warranty. The fact that they did replace yours for free suggests they know there's a problem otherwise why should they pay if it's "your" mistake? Is there a way I can "dm" you? would be great to have some pictures of the enclosure!

The test is a little flawed, as you pressed it on glass and that doesnt go down, the battery will go down a little, so the would give a better seal. A good test would be putting paint on the gasket, then close it, and see where you see the contact of the seal. Willing to test that and post a video? Im just curious.

Water Resistant ≠ Waterproof. Nobody sells waterproof items, not even watches. Anything below 5ATM should not be considered safe from water. GoPros own site are only claims, NO certifications like a IP or ATM rating. So it's in-house take their word for it. I'm not invalidating the issue you faced but they are being blatantly misleading with their wording to unsuspecting individuals. Drop GoPro and get something else. @@lakesideminers1339 Then why haven't I had a single failure with this design after submerging countless GoPros over the years? And why have none of my friends? The simplest answer is that the design works fine
@RichWithTech
@RichWithTech 3 месяца назад
@@andrewadventures1 a design that is *prone* to failure does not *guarantee* failure on the first, or even 200th use. But when you have so many reports of "first use GoPro leaked" on a device which is advertised as "waterproof" there is clearly an issue there. And no it's not people "closing the door wrong" there's only one way to close the door! As to why some devices are fine I'm now wondering if battery swelling is part of the issue, that exacerbates the other poor design choices. May I ask how many thermal shutdowns you've experienced?
@andrewadventures1
@andrewadventures1 3 месяца назад
@@RichWithTech “so many reports” - how many exactly? And how does that percentage compare to users like me, who have never encountered an issue? I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but come on… what’s the likelihood that a random RU-vid channel with ~52 subscribers has stumbled across a years-old design flaw of a company that has shipped tens-of-millions of units over 5 years with this design? Are you a mechanical engineer? If there was an actual problem, it would be exponentially cheaper for GoPro to fix it, since they update the camera every year. It’s a much more realistic explanation is that a few customers, like yourself, have encountered a problem from either a manufacturing defect or from not closing the door properly. It’s such arrogant ignorance to claim that the engineers just made a silly mistake and don’t know their trade. I could be wrong too, but I’m not claiming to know more than the literal experts. And yes, improper closure is certainly possible (debris, not sealing the latch, etc)
