Horror games throughout history have managed to scare players in millions of different ways. But what's the most effective way of them all?

Congrats on your first video. You did a very good job especially for making one for the first time. Your voice is distinct and recognizable and you sound clear and confident as you’re recording your lines. As you make more and get more time using your editor I know you’ll improve significantly so I highly encourage you to continue making videos. Good job man

'ALIEN: Isolation' was a good example of the fear of the unknown... the Xenomorph didn't make it's first appearance until a few hours into the game, and that made exploring the Sevastopol Station a very tense and creepy situation. There were other points in the game as well where the Xenomorph didn't appear for long stretches of time. The A.I. of the Xenomorph was also impressive, which added to the sense of fear and anxiety.

this is a very good video ! i really agree with your points- i also do think some level of predictability in horror games adds to gameplay quality and maybe even some world building. a big example that comes to mind is that the vents in dead space may have enemies. it is fun to see how games balance information given to players in the genre.

I think you can also observe this shift in what's considered horror in movies as well. Jump scares, CGI monsters and ghosts, cheap effects... Movies like Alien aren't made anymore.

You really should add some music into the background, preferably the mentioned game's soundtrack. It'll make the video much more interesting as a whole. Your voice over is very clear and easy to understand despite using the headset's microphone. Overall, this video is great!

Yessssss, the fear of the unknown is necessary for games to be scary. And doubly yessssss to making a video discussing INDY games that focus on the great is the unknown. Great video!

I never got into Silent Hill until last year. I've played the first four games and these games are the psychological equivalent to Resident Evil. They are goddamned amazing and I still hope to this day that Konami brings them back.

Great first video. Form me one of my favorite “slow burns” as it where, was during the opening section of dead space. No contact with the crew, you have no weapons for a bit, and your entire team is Slaughtered within seconds. Such a good opening to a game.

I had the same feeling about RE7 as you did about Outlast. The beginning was all about the fear of the unknown, while the latter sections lost a lot of of the tension as it became more action focused. Still had its moments, but as things began to make more sense and more dots got connected, the terror subsided. Great video! Keep it up!

Your point about how The Dark Descent uses mysterious sounds to keep the player on edge also applies to A Machine for Pigs, which is the main reason that game was so scary for me. I think the main difference between the two games however is that in TDD those sounds do sometimes turn out to be real enemies you encounter, while AMfP almost never actually has any real enemy encounters or other dangers. Strangely enough, this made AMfP even scarier to me, because never actually encountering enemies made it so you almost never actually find out what is making all those creepy sounds and as such the game was able to deliver an almost constant fear of the unknown. In my experience playing similar hide and seek survival horror games, they always get less scary as you encounter more enemies and they become nothing more than obstacles for progression as opposed to sources of fear. Granted, towards the end of AMfP you do actually start to encounter lots of enemies and quickly find out how little danger they actually present, but by that point in the game the narrative takes over as the primary source of horror (which is in my opinion easily the most horrifying story I've ever experienced in a work of fiction). Basically all this is to say that Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is criminally underrated and one of my favorite horror games of all time.

looking forward to more videos! i really miss the dreadful feeling of not knowing what lies ahead, you’d be so stressed and tense that any sound would make you flinch for even just a bit, like who could forget the iconic Kitty in the Locker moment in Silent Hill... i hope the fear of the unknown comes back in action again

I definitely agree with you on the unknown being what makes a game scary. A fairly recent title that I think did this well was Lost in Vivo. It felt like a first person silent hill 1. Yeah it had jump scares butt for the most part I was always on my toes cause the setting was so eerie. Highly recommend it!

Great first video! Fnaf 4 in my opinion is one of the greatest indie horror games ever to use the fear of the unknown. The fact that an animatronic could be standing inches from your face but you don't know unless you flick on your flashlight is one of the most genius design choices ever.

Fear of unknown is not overrated. It's under-used (if that's even a word). Sound it's a great device to really scare too. In Silent Hill the fog/darkness + the radio, you know there's something but you can't spot it, how many of them? 1? 5? Should I run pass them? But run where? And that final area without map. Hell yeah, good luck.

@@horrorvisuals also as someone who considers Bloodborne their favourite game ever, I would say that if a game really wants to keep up a sense of tension and dread, it should have an aspect of the fear of unknown woven throughout it. *But* to distinguish a game from all others available nowdays, I'd say it's necessary to have another aspect of fear (in Bloodbornes case, the fear of being physically overcome by the beasts for example) to support- and be supported by the fear of unknown. Maybe could see that as the game showing you a glimpse into the unknown as a "see, you *should be* scared. Imagine what else is waiting in the dark..." to enhance the fear of unknown.

Great first video! I don't think anyone should call the fear of the unknown overrated since it's a great 'tool' to make something scary. But I don't think it's absolutely necessary. When it comes to games, movies, shows etc it's important to be original and try out multiple things. If everyone sticks to the same formula, then eventually everything is gonna be the same thing and you'll quickly get bored of that. Also, let us know if you want us to do suggestions for topics to talk about ^^
