Ah, the reviled "Marsose". They were feared by enemy, demonized by Indonesian historians, and I heard that many became thugs when their service ended

Very interesting I live in Australia and mostly grew up in the Northern Territory and am fascinated with the history of the area and the islands to the north of us. I’d like to see you do a episode or two on the Dutch forces in Australian service during WW2 I feel they are the unsung heroes of the war in the South Pacific. I have Dutch friends who had no idea on the Dutch contribution to the war in this theatre of operations. Great channel just love watching all episodes on lesser known units/sectors the war. 0:03

And the one youre talking aboute in this video. Even tho i,m 37 , i learn more anoute the dutch history and legacy. I am happy to find your channel. I am from Sweden but grew up in South Africa. Of course I learned about the Dutch influence and the importance of the Cape for its trade with Indonesia for nutmeg in Maluku archipelago. My work took me to Indonesia and after many years I settled here and married a woman and unbeknown to me of part Ambonese heritag. Circle closed! If you can make an episode of this trade and the link between the countries for the importance to VOC and the English of course would be very appreciated. History is so important for everyone to understand where we are today and predict the future. Thank you for teaching this, unfortunately not prioritized in schools today.

Veel over expedities in Nederlands-Indië en met name hoe die van binnenuit in elkaar staken is ook te vinden in 'Van Marketenster tot Logistiek Netwerk'. De focus ligt wel op militaire logistiek, maar het laat zien hoe moeilijk de operaties in het gebied waren. Klein deeltje daaruit dat ik kan uitlichten is dat de expedities vaak afhankelijk waren van dragers die alle voorraden met de hand verplaatsten door vaak lastig terrein dat dichtbegroeid kon zijn. Mensen die misdrijven begingen en als dwangarbeid moesten werken als drager voor het leger, deden het vaak veel beter dan lokaal ingehuurde krachten. Die laatsten voelden zich meestal verbonden bij de opstandelingen ter plaatse en hadden ook de optie weg te lopen, terwijl gestraften vaak van een ander eiland kwamen en niet alleen moeilijk terug konden komen zonder door Defensie getransporteerd te worden na afloop van hun straf, maar veel etnische groepen hadden ook weinig met elkaar op waardoor deserteren vaak gevaarlijk was voor de gestraften.

You could supplement this by describing some of the actions of this Korps in detail, and maybe letting us know what happened to the Gendarmes themselves both during and after the Japanese occupation, and the Indonesian Independance War. Also - as said earlier - it would be very nice if you could cover the succesive wars that the Portuguese fought in East Timor from the late 19th century up into the early 20th century, this including the Lifau Rebelion. PS - did you realy said that the Korps had African NCOs? Where did they got those?

Hey, can you please make video how Islam & Christianity came to Indonesia? As an Indonesian, Islam didn't really come with trade especially to what happened with my ethnic groups, an indigenous ethnic group in the middle of Sumatran jungles and Bukit Barisan mountain range near the largest vulcanic lake in the world. In 1539, Acehnese Sultanate invaded my ancestors's kingdom when our king refused Islam. Aceh lost the war then they bought & hired Ottoman weapons & soldiers to invade us. In the 1820s during Padri War, Padri soldiers massacred 200.000 people including our king for not accepting Islam, they brutally ransacked our villages/cities & massacred my ethnic groups who refused their religion. They were failed to conquer us when a cholera outbreak happened thanks to dead bodies that leaked cholera. After they failed to conquer us, our ancestors were devastated after watching our ransacked kingdoms and dead relatives even cholera outbreak happened and decimated our population. My ancestors became hostile towards outsiders/foreigners. A couple of US Baptist missionarists came and introduced Christianity. Too bad, the locals thought they were another hostile foreigners/outsiders and they caught & ate them. Before Christianity came, my people were pagans who had cannibalistic culture/rituals. My ancestors conducted cannibalism towards people who did terrible crimes such as rape, murder, or treason. POWs were also eaten back then. Before Christianity, my ancestors believed if we ate people, it'd grant us magical strength. A German missionarist came and introduced Christianity among my people. He built schools, hospitals, etc. But a lot of kingdom citizens hated him coz Christianity could destroy our culture and religion such as our cannibalistic rituals. Cannibalism was eventually banned when Dutch colonial regime imposed anti cannibalism law towards us in 1900s. If Christianity never came, perhaps my people would still do capital punishment in form of cannibalism. Unlike other Indonesian regions which were colonized for 350 years, we only got conquered in 1907 when Dutch soldiers succesfully assassinated our priest king. Dutch faced difficulties at fighting a cannibalistic nation in the middle of Sumatran jungles near a large lake

why was the ‘Korps Marechausse te Voet’ issued with carbines & sabres instead of carbines & bayonets? having to hold a sabre on one hand and a carbine on the other looked a bit unwieldy, wouldn’t it be more effective to simply attach bayonets to the rifles/carbines & use it like a short spear in close quarters fighting instead?

Man, waar haal je al deze uitzonderlijke historische kennis vandaan..? Ongelooflijk en heel interessant. Mijn grootvader van vaders kant diende in het KNIL, kreeg het Atjeh kruis...je zult t niet geloven, hier thuis (in Frankrijk) heb ik nog zijn geweer, een "de Beaumont" uit die tijd.

Colonialism never really went smoothly or ended well. That aside, whenever I hear about Aceh, I think of the terrible 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and how devastating it was to the Indonesian people. Thanks for an interesting video as always Stefan👍

The Spanish in the Philippines from the beginning have never succeeded during their colonial occupation of the Philippines. Muslim tribes or Moros in the South have kept the Spanish Colonial Army busy for the next 400 years plus till 1898 when Spain gave up the Philippines. When the Americans took over it still had problems with the Moros until about WWI with very minor skirmishes with the US Army, Philippine Scouts, and Philippine Constabulary. WWII when the Japanese invaded in 1941, the Japanese really had a headache dealing with Moros and Filipino Resistance, then the Americans came in 1944 and obliterated the Japanese. The Americans were smart and left the Philippines in 1946 and gave it independence. The Philippine government after WWII are still fighting the Moros and Communist Groups till this day. Funny thing about Filipino culture is they love US American culture that these insurgency movements going on today don't even make international news unless it's a terrorist activity. The Philippine Armed Forces only does internal security operations like Mexico and many countries in Central, South America, and Africa to name a few, oh Israel and the Middle East. While this kind of crap is going in in the Philippines, a fast food company is making strides in the European, Middle East, and in the US markets. It's Jollibee Restaurants that sells damn good burgers, sweet spaghetti, and fried chicken. The Philippines a former American colony selling fast food to it's former colonizer and making them happy and making money off of them.😂😂😂 The Philippines the only Spanish colony where everyone doesn't speak Spanish but English as a second language. 🤣🤣🤣

Stefan, as a high school history teacher, you have a moral responsibility for the formation of young minds. Give your kids the knowledge so that they can think for themselves and not only accept what the Dutch government wants them to believe

The whole history of the Marechaussee when first created was , a revival of the old Bleu guard , All of them where Grenadiers . with police powers . First used to subdue any rebelion by belgians. with utter brutality . And then the recreated a milittary counter insurgence version to subdue oprisings , insurgents and putting the entire indonesian archipel under dutch controll . Most imfamous of commanders , Van Heutsz . Literaly a force you woulnd want to face as they wherer literaly created to root out and hunt insurgents and guerillia fighters There are still references to the east indies in current day marrechaussee , that refference to their Knil past . including the dreaded klewang . There are still manual on how to fight with the Klewang and rifle . .

Just so people know I went to school with this guy... ...and his grades were pretty bad, always blaming others for his misfortune or lack of work ethic. He was always an outsider and didn't have many friends or girlfriends. In the second year he got expelled from my school after it became known he is/was an activist for Antifa. He was part of an animal activist group that intimidated local farmers by stalking them with anonymous phone calls and posting their address online on radical leftist forums. For this reason it must have been hard for him to find someone that wants to hire him due to his past. So apparently he started a RU-vid channel to expose his grievances towards the Netherlands. Unfortunately we have many leftists like him in the Netherlands that love to dunk on their own country and ancestors mostly because they missed out in life and are looking for someone to blame...

Korps Marechausse is indeed effective against guerilla warfare in the Aceh jungle. I wonder if this part of history were taught at dutch schools?
