Why the Aceh War in Indonesia Lasted so Long

The Aceh War was a long and bloody conflict that lasted from 1873 to 1913 between the Sultanate of Aceh, located in what is now the Indonesian province of Aceh, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Dutch had been trying to establish control over the lucrative Acehnese pepper trade, but faced fierce resistance from the Acehnese.
The war was characterized by brutal fighting on both sides, with the Dutch using modern military technology such as machine guns, artillery, and warships to overwhelm the Acehnese guerrilla forces. The Acehnese, for their part, employed hit-and-run tactics and made extensive use of fortifications and trenches to resist the Dutch advance. They Dutch used a new formation: Korps Marechaussee te voet.
The war finally came to an end in 1913, when the Dutch managed to kill the main Acehnese leader. However, violence never stopped. The conflict had a profound impact on both the Acehnese and the Dutch, with many Acehnese seeing it as a struggle for independence and a symbol of resistance against colonialism, while the Dutch faced criticism both at home and abroad for their brutal tactics and the high cost of the war.

As a Javanese the Acehnese is one of the most fascinating ethnic group that I always love to learn about when it comes to Indonesian history. The fact that they have so many iconic freedom fighters such as Keumalahayati, Cut Nyak Dhien, Cut Nyak Meutia, Chik Di Tiro, Teuku Umar, Fatahilah, and later Teungku Daud Beureuh is astonishing. The New Order would have done well to not forget history and learned from the Dutch when they try to subdue the Free Aceh Movement, the DOM (Daerah Operasi Militer) carried out by the regime would only fan the flame of rebellion.

Aceh survived that long because 3 things= 1. Ethnic solidarity : During Padri war the dutch armed one of the local warlord to hope he will be pro-dutch and lengthen the war to weaken acehese kingdom. Instead he made peace with aceh and make coalition to ATTACK THE DUTCH. 2. International aid : aceh have respectable Navy (and cannons, courtesy of Ottomans) before dutch VOC become established and fought tooth and nails with the portuguese. The british explorer James Lancaster asked for peaceful passage to acehese King and in return british gave independence guarantee to acehese with permission of the Queen Elizabeth I. Only shortly before aceh war the british revoked the guarantee in turn for malaya and other dutch colony and it surprised the Aceh kingdom it frantically made them seek diplomacy to other european power, which none replied. 3. Sane leaders with principles : they don't want to give concessions or ask dutch help at all. Sunda kingdom asked VOC to be their ally against Mataram and that's how Batavia exist at first (as their offshore military base) but instead of protection it become a node to start colonialism. Mataram have the most insane of all, Amangkurat I was an opressive (and horny ruler) his opression and fuckery made everyone mad (he patrol village for cute girls to fuck, even had affair with prime minister's wife which made entire palace furious!) thus many rebelled. He then razed many villages and executed experienced shipbuilders and craftsman out of fear they would ignite further rebellion. He singlehandedly destroyed century old naval industry making java have no navy to compete with dutch in the future. Then because everyone hated him and he hardly have trusted aides, he asked for VOC help to quell the rebellions giving VOC spice monopoly rights in some of Mataram's ports and made Mataram army just a ceremonial army because VOC already handled internal security affairs. These things were not taught in school, you need to seek about it yourself. Indonesian history have meme-ish insane moments like this where a king just give important things wholesale to foreigners for protection, so he have freedom to do wild shenanigans. We are not a defenseless victim of europeans, but of our leadership's stupidity!

The Aceh War occurred around the same time as the Boer War. Both the Dutch and British were seeking to consolidate control over their colonies. As in Aceh, British and Dominion forces faced guerrilla warfare and also established concentration camps. The Dutch experience during the Aceh War also has some similarities with the US experiences in the Vietnam and Afghan wars. As with the Americans, the Dutch had to deal with a strong indigenous resistance movement with grassroots support.
@EarthForces
@EarthForces 10 месяцев назад
The American "pacification" of the Philippines and extinguishing its "unrecognized" independent "First Republic" would be an interesting study. The Boer concentration camps are quite tame, unlike the American strategy used on the archipelago to subdue and might have killed 1/5 of the population.

The difference was the existence of strong grassroots political movements in South Vietnam that supported the insurgency, whereas communist support in Malaya was fragmented.

Also, this war reminds me of the wars we (Portuguese) waged in late 19th/ early 20th century in East Timor, where some 20.000 deaths occured. René Pelissier wrote extensively about this. Similar Acehnese rebel against Japanese too. Apparently they were forced to change the direction of prayer to face the rising sun in the east (probably some form of emperor cult). So they rebel, both uleebalang and ulama revolted against the Japanese. The most prominent was the movement of Teungku Abdul Djalil (ulama) in 1942. Nearing the end of the war, there was basically a civil war, after vacuum of power. In general, uleebalang supported the Dutch return, while ulama supported republican government, though plenty of figures in both camps. Teuku Abdul Hamid Azwar (republican uleebalang) leader of TKR (embrio of TNI) beat a Japanese battalion in Krueng Panjoe in Nov 1945. Fearing probably another long guerrilla war, the Dutch never return to Aceh. Plenty of dutch leaning uleebalang were massacred with their family. Aceh became a decidedly republican stronghold. Its society also became decidely more islamic, sowing the seeds of more conflict with a more secular government of Indonesia later.

Thanks, Stefan. That was very informative. I noticed that you mention Batak. I do not know much about the area, but I remember as a young man going to a church here in Canada and there was a delegation from Batak at the church. They were on a tour of Canada to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of their church. I do not know if it was the 100th or so anniversary, but they were Lutherans of some sort. I remember the minister having a white gown and a purple stole. That would have been in the 1980's. Thus I was under the impression that these people were Christians and had not converted from Islam, but from an animist religion, but I am not sure. Thanks again....Stephan in Canada

I really enjoy watching your RU-vid. because I was able to get a truly extraordinary education. Indonesian history books are not written in full. we were only taught "that the ancestors of the Indonesian people were brave and always won against the Dutch colonialists. And Indonesia is one unit that cannot be separated. I often think about how it is possible for various tribes, cultures and religions to survive. Maybe because there is historical manipulation which indoctrinates each generation to the new generation. I hope you will explain the history of Maluku, starting from the Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch eras. and also the cross-cultural events of Papuans and Maluku people, as well as the Hongi war🙏🙏 thank you

dont be stupid, indonesia was based on dutch east indies or "hindia belanda" in local lingo. if you question "indonesia is one unit that cannot be separated" then you should question the dutch for did so in the first place. it has nothing to do with people being indoctrinated. "Indonesian history books are not written in full." you should not blame indonesia if the its "full" history is saved in leiden libraries and not owned by indonesia.

many of my relative in Aceh Besar surrounding area was klled in that dutch invasion of Aceh Sultanate. some of our elder has said that almost half of the Sultanate population was klled. dutch knil/marsose was always has harsh act when it come to face with Aceh population, they just hack and slash, burn to the ground, not let any of people(man, kids, olds, women, babies) also chicken, cat, goat, cow and other animals in the kampongs alive. its just pure hatred and animosity toward other living being. many kampongs just sign treaty so they could see next day, but less they know, it only make it worse for them. colonial dutch is not peaceful in nature, they see other race as below them. as same as seeing dogs. so other race than colonial dutch = animal. but in matter of years, they see Achenese as human, a respected being. tactics they use in java or other place in the world can't work in Aceh. its different customs and influence. because Aceh = Islam. so see us with respect.

lol another one of those revisionists. Aceh Sultanate was a hotbed of piracy and constantly raided Christian, Buddhists and Hindus to either enlsave or outright kill because in your small muslim minds, being non-Islamic is nothing more than animal. European colonialism didn't just spring out of thin air. Chinese supported the first colonists the Portuguese because of unfair and unjust policies. The Hindus and Indian traders also supported the Portuguese in the bombardment and capture of Malacca because of muslim oppression. The local Hindu/Buddhist Malays also sought support from the Portuguese, British and Dutch because of Muslim piracy and interference. Don't paint Islam as some sort of peaceful religion. While your awful religion started by a p3d0phile who mounted 9 year old Aisha spread by the sword, the internet is killing it off because we see it for how horrible it is. This isn't the dark ages anymore where anyone outside of Islam and the Middle East doesn't have access to your books. Anyone can read the Quran and your Hadiths themselves just by browsing the internet.

These descriptions of volunteer foreign and SS units are important too - and the details of their eexperiences and disappointments are a valuable counterweight to this strange modern trend to idolise them as 'modern samurai' etc. Keep it up! a small correction: the gun you show at 6:19 is actually a Beaumont-Vitali magazine rifle. It's a conversion of the original single shot Beaumont rifle to a magazine fed rifle with the addition of a box magazine as designed by an italian named Vitali (similar conversions were done by the Italians with their Vetterli rifles). Tohse conversions were made from 1884 onwards I think. So they would not have been available in 1873. I don't know in what way the dutch converted their muzzle loading rifled muskets. But I am sure they used some conversion system similar to the Snider or Springfield Trapdoor system as most other nations did the same. Those must have been the mainstay during the 1873 battles. Does anyone know more?

Aceh never gave up. Why. When the Acehnese army almost lost to the Dutch army (the majority of the Dutch soldiers were mercenaries from other areas of Indonesia, especially Java), the Sultan of Aceh surrendered the sovereignty of Aceh to the people of Aceh, thus the people of Aceh continued to fight even though the sultan was captured by the Dutch. Well, not only the Dutch who failed winning the Acehnese hearts and minds, but also the Indonesian Javanese. It's gonna take many many years to make any Acehnese feels as Indonesian like the other ethnic groups in Indonesia. Compare to their neighbors like Bataknese branches, Riau Malay, and Nias who already feel as Indonesian, but not Acehnese. But at least the political tension is under "well-controlled" by the ex-Free Aceh Movement (GAM) which already enjoy their superior autonomous powers in the entire Aceh under Indonesian constitution. This is better treatment by Indonesian government rather than by the Dutch colonial government.

@abcddef2112
@abcddef2112 8 месяцев назад
Its seems you are not familiar of the root of GAM conflict or even Aceh modern history. First of all i guess, Gayo is 'Bataknese branch'. Acehnese fought for Indonesia independence. Just after Japanese was defeated in ww2, Acehnese devolved into civil war of generally Ulama supporting Indonesia and Uleebalang supporting Dutch (formerly employed as colonial administrators). You can pay attention to the title, Teuku is uleebalang, teungku is ulama. Previously ofc above these group were the sultan (which by the time after aceh war did not hold much power anymore). The dutch fearing probably a long guerrilla war never returned to Aceh. Hence Aceh becoming republican stronghold and ulama (islamist) becoming more prominent as many uleebalang and their family (secular) was killed. The leader of this most prominent ulama was Teungku M. Daud Beureuh. He was however dissapointed because the Indonesia government that was formed is more secular. Hence he later joined the islamist rebellion of Darul Islam of Katosuwiryo in Java, trying to make an islamist Indonesia. Darul islam was defeated elsewhere and hence the acehnese movement transformed to GAM (with Hasan di Tiro, his protege), as it wanted a seperate islamist acehnese state. However its not like all uleebalang are gone, the founder of local TNI (initially TkR) who defeated Japanese in Krueng Panjoe 1945 was republican uleebalang, Teuku Abdul Hamid Azwar, Teuku Hamzah Bendahara, etc. Many Uleebalang joined TNI to not be accused of Dutch supporter as they were employed as colonial administrator by the Dutch). It can be considered retaliatory an uleebalang-secular dominated institution (tni iskandar muda) massacred ulama-islamist dominated movement (gam). Like the ulama did to the uleebalang in the 1940s. So the root of fighting in Aceh was the forces that pulled Aceh toward a more secular (Uleebalang) or toward a more islamic (Ulama) society. Its an old wound that hopefully with time will heal. Acehnese currently have their own sharia and they will decide if it wants to be removed later.

Have you ever considered translating books on Dutch military history in full? I’m an English speaker, so it is difficult to find sources on these fascinating topics.

Interesting how this little remembered war presents a case study that could have reduced the learning curve the West saw in Afghanistan and Iraq, similar to how the US Counter-Insurgency in the Philippines presented lessons that had to be expensively re-learned in Vietnam.

The difference is in Afghanistan and Vietnam, the Americans lost but in this case for Aceh the Dutch won the war and Aceh is annexed to the Dutch East Indies which is now mostly Indonesia. Now the Aceh province can't implement sharia law fully bcs the Dutch influences is still felt by them from losing the Aceh war.

I saw on TV recently that the king and queen of terrorists came to Indonesia and apologized for the crimes and brutality of their nation against the Indonesian people, up to 100 descendants of the Indonesian nation will not forget the crimes of the Dutch terrorists, who have killed the Indonesian people for 300 years. years, the Indonesian people will continue to remember and tell stories to the younger generation of Indonesia about the crimes of Dutch terrorists against the Indonesian nation.

Those ‘terrorists’ werent even alive during the age of colonisation. Netherlands moved on from that and proceded to rely on their own natural gas and naval construction of ships, right after the destruction of WW2. They were in ruins, but they still managed to rise up and become one of the richest countries in the world. Indonesia should just fix their own flaws, like the dutch did, instead of whining like you are.
