It’s a terrifying thing to be on a sinking ship. Often, everything happens so fast that it’s hard to focus on what you need to do to survive. But this story isn’t just about a boat sinking. It’s way worse than that. It's about one of the worst things you can imagine happening once you hit the water. Historic Disasters.

My third great uncle, Christopher Dix, was the pilot of the Bywell Castle that day. The subsequent enquiry called witnesses that suggested he may have been somewhat drunk when the accident happened, although he was an incredibly experienced Thames pilot. As the video suggests, in the end no one person was found to blame. Most of the passengers were wearing heavy clothes and could not swim. It's remarkable that such a massively deadly disaster in relatively recent history has essentially been forgotten.

This is extremely fascinating and quite eerie that a descendant of the Bywell freighter is here to shed personal knowledge of this tragedy after around 160 years!!! I am terribly sad that your third great Uncle faced public disgrace and defamation which were blatant lies. I am curious if it was simply an attempt of placing blame after such a tragedy. The actual culprit was the British government as they simply refused to update the sewer systems which played an enormous impact in the number of deaths.
@JohnDavies-cn3ro
@JohnDavies-cn3ro 2 месяца назад
I read a book about the tragedy some fifty years ago, and it has shown up on another youtube channel; other than that it has received very little attention. From the book I remember reading that the Bywell Castle herself was subsequently lost at sea . So was your relative lost then, or was he fortunate enough not to have been on board? The tragedy also showed how flimsily built the Princess Alice was; and how seriously overloaded. No RNLI at Tower Bridge back then - it took another horrific disaster to ensure that
@chellecoulson4458

@@JohnDavies-cn3ro That's right, the book is by Joan Lock. No, since my third uncle was a pilot, he only worked within the confines of the Thames, guiding vessels up and down the river. He attended the inquest and gave evidence, and then he went on to die in hospital in 1892.

@@lisaperry5999"Chicken" is probably lethal in more cases than one, and it looks stupid to me. I can see some appeal in toeing a line of danger _and succeeding in avoiding trouble,_ but at the same time, there are ways to do that which *don't* put other people at risk. And if neither person backs down, everyone either gets injured or dies. For the uninitiated (not that I looked much into it myself, but I at least got my feet wet when I saw this in a movie:) "Chicken" is a game where people in 2 opposing cars will drive towards each other at a fast rate of speed and either crash into each other, or have one of the cars swerve out of the way. Then the person who served gets mocked as "Chicken," which (if I'm not wrong) is some old term for Women (like "Chicken, here's your Roost." But it also seemed to *not* be a derogatory term in a 1940s / 1950s movie I watched called "Cheaper by the Dozen" which takes place around 1912.) "Chicken" looks a bit like Russian Roulette, come to think of it.

My worst fear is being fatally trapped or essentially buried alive. Just the thought of the slow death, not knowing if help is coming for you. Descending into madness and going so crazy that I scratch my fingers down to the bone trying to escape. Nope nope nope. This fear started right after 9/11, because I'm certain there were at least a few people that survived the collapse and took a long time to die, not even knowing what the hell really happened to them or why. They were probably certain that help was going to come, and it never did.

Dear God this is awful. I never see a story about a sinking vessel without thinking about what happened to one of my dad’s friends. My dad goes sea fishing every Sunday and he was friends with a tugboat skipper in our local harbour. The tugboat skipper’s son was also a tugboat skipper in the harbour. One day a cargo ship was entering the harbour during a big storm (they don’t call us The Cape of Storms for nothing). I’m not sure why they went ahead with it, given the weather conditions, but they did. Long story short, my dad’s friend’s tugboat was slammed into the harbour wall and started sinking. Most of the crew were saved. But my dad’s friend and another crew member were trapped in the cabin. The NSRI divers tried to rescue them, but the boat was sinking incredibly fast so they called their divers back for their own safety (a rapidly sinking vessel causes very strong currents that can pull divers down incredibly fast and trap them). My dad’s friend’s son was right there on one of the rescue vessels while his father’s tugboat sank. His dad and the crew member were shouting and frantically hammering on the walls of the cabin while the boat sank. And the son heard it all. He was screaming and fighting to get to his dad, but obviously he was held back. He listened to his own dad screaming for help as he started drowning. It’s absolutely horrifying to even think about. I think about the son often. I hope he’s okay. My dad still goes sea fishing every Sunday and I’m still terrified. The sea truly has no mercy

Blows my mind how much knowledge was lost during the Dark Ages. The logistics of basic personal hygiene, proper sanitation etc., took hundreds of years for people to re~educate themselves. Not sure what that has to do with the video. The British had more advanced scientific and engineering knowledge in 1858 than the ancients had for the collective thousands of years before the fall of the western Roman Empire. I wasn't until the 1860s when Pasteur scientifically proved the existence of microbes invisible to the naked eye cause disease that humans had any real knowledge of germs. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans didn't know that. They didn't even have the modern scientific method.

They did know about the importance of hygiene and the danger of sewage and other filthy substances. It is even told on the video that they wanted that stuff away from the wealthy parts of town and so they ran it through the poor part. It's not that they didn't know how dangerous it was, they just didn't care because it was the poor neighbourhood. As for our time being more "enlightened", water companies in the UK are to this day dumping untreated sewage into the waterways to the point that many rivers are so polluted that swimming in them makes you sick. This is despite the technology to treat the water existing. At least the Victorian era people had the excuse that they literally weren't able to purify the water, they didn't have the technology. Today they do it purely because they don't care

@singularlyinepthuman 2 месяца назад
Contemporary reports state that the water was so thick with the sewage that it was like trying to swim in treacle. Also the clothes worn by the women would have massively hindered any attempt at swimming. Layers of petticoats, heavy woollen fabrics etc. Even a strong swimmer would struggle in those conditions.
@littlebear274
@littlebear274 2 месяца назад
It wasn't at all common at the time, really. The late nineteenth century was when it slowly started to become popular, there was an amateur swimming club founded in 1869 and it spread more after the first Olympics had swimming contests in 1896. Makes sense if you think about it - existing natural water sources tended to be extremely polluted, while artificial swimming pools are problematic to maintain without the right chemicals. Keeping water clean enough to want to actually spend time in for fun is surprisingly hard! And that on top of what @singularlyinepthuman rightly says about their clothing as well, even if some few of the passengers could swim they had a lot of factors preventing them. (Another one is that a ship sinking so quickly creates water currents that can pull people back in, this is dangerous both for those trying to escape and for rescuers.)

In the wake of this disaster a charity fund was raised and typically many people made fraudulent claims of being affected by the tragedy. One of these was Jack The Ripper's third victim, Swedish immigrant Elisabeth Stride, (nee Ericsson) who claimed to have lost her husband and children in the event. At the time she and her husband owned a coffee shop in the East End and were childless, Elisabeth being unable to conceive.
