Before you decide to go scuba diving in a cave when you don’t have experience, take two weeks to think about the dangers; then never think about it again.

I get it if you like to cave dive, but no one should be put in danger to come save you.

The story of the boat Essex is interesting to me as it is sort of the real life version of Moby Dick...just 10 times worse and unfortunate. I was unaware there was another similar tale. Thanks for the informative videos!

This is nothing compared to the horror stories in Everest or K2. Denali is harder to climb because you don’t have sherpas or porters to help you. You’re basically on your own and you have to carry your own stuff.

Crazy how actual changes are made when managers are prosecuted personally. Dupont, Purdue and others should be as well.

What happens to the exhaled bubbles when one cave dives? Do they just immediately get absorbed into the rock above? Do the gasses build their own air pocket? Google doesn’t understand what I’m trying to ask (not asking about existing air pockets. Just curious where gases go in a completely submerged cave) so maybe I’ll find an answer here. Thanks!

I literally never have any idea if the caving map is a cross section where the top is "up", or looking down where the top is North. Why are there never any indicators what map we are looking at?

The Old Norse would refer to people dying at sea due to a lack of food as them "being eaten by wyrms" - sea serpents, essentially. Only one saga recorded a situation with a man being eaten in this way, by wyrms, them all drawing straws to see which men would get in a specially treated boat and which would stay behind to be eaten. A young lad loses and starts crying and begging the captain to protect him - reminding the captain that he had promised the boys mother to protect the boy with his own life. The captain volunteered so as not to break his word, so it was thought very important that this event be remembered as a tale of a truly honorable man.

about the second incident, perhaps a shark/some sea creature snatch the body and take it somewhere before locals came to help

Also, the leader of such a group should make an assessment of the partakers' weight/diameter. William ought never to have been on that "wild" tour in the first place.

difference between east and west, even rescuers sad they are dead, president says rescue untill you have them dead or alive, what you saw they instanly started to drill and move forward to rescue the second theey got there. while in usa they would waste time talking, doing nothing. how many times usa rescuers simply killed person doing nothing not alowing people who where in there who could easily rescue. in usa they would simply kill person,m but not alow someone else to save the person.

Poor kiley.. her intuition was very strong and was telling her that something bad was going to happen even before she left for the field trip. This is why you should trust your gut. Those counselors completely failed her.

Risking our lives in a dangerous cave isn't enough. Let's add a 20km hike just to reach it.

Maybe I’m wrong for this but if I was Michel’s mother I would have asked to leave his body in the cave. Why risk more lives and resources attempting the body recovery? I’d rather the cave be sealed off so no one would attempt going in there again.

I don’t think the parents killed their daughter, directly, but they definitely let it happen by not at least securing the tent (closing/zipping it), or staying with the kids knowing there are predators around that would gladly trade your life for a crumb of nutrients.

Isn’t there some psychological test about a runaway train? Like, it’s heading down the track and it’s going to hit a group of six people, and they’ll all be killed; but, you’re in a position to pull a lever to divert the train onto a different track, but on that second track there’s a group of three people who’ll be struck and killed. The question is, do you do nothing, resulting in the deaths of six people? Or do you physically intervene and switch the train onto a different track meaning only three people will be killed? On the one hand you’re saving three people in totality, but you’re also condemning three people to death who were never in any danger until you intervened. What do you do?

You follow tradition. The reason it is done that way is it satisfies legal precedents. Everyone agrees, So no one participated unwillingly. Everyone knows the whole truth about it, no misinformation. It is performed in the fairest manner with the best chance for equal odds. Its not murder in that case. Its suicide. Assisted suicide since someone else has to finish it. Choosing someone though, thats murder. Period. If he died naturally, thats fine. The 6 month thing though, similar to crime of passion, so theres precedent for that at least nowadays.
