A certain Host of the FFXI/FFXIV podcast (LBR) used to complain about this all the time. Kinda a horse thats been beaten to death, Raised and Tank bustered again. About half of the items in the cash were available in game at some point.

It used to be not so bad when it was stuff that was just like meme garbage, references, and old seasonal event stuff. But now it feels like more of the "must-have" outfits are on there. And also like half the stuff on there isn't even account wide.
I don't really feel strongly either way, while it's pretty obvious that not all the revenue from the cash shop, it making money to begin with is what ensures the game's future. And it seems pretty clear to me that at least some of it must go back into the game, given the increase in quality we've seen over time. I do kind of resent certain things like emotes and event items being locked away but it doesn't bother me all that much. That being said, speaking of glamour, I FUCKING HATE LITERALLY EVERY HOOD ON GEAR AVAILABLE FOR WHM. WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH THE OBSESSION WITH THE HEAD SLEEVES? LITERALLY THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD LOOK GOOD IS KRILE'S HOOD, BUT THAT'S GENDER LOCKED TOO.
Why are the servers still average aswell? With all that money they could upgrade the servers at least. New content drops and the servers overload and can't play 100% efficiently
@@Poldovico Context: All MTX is bad MTX. There are no excuses that make it acceptable to put them in a game. We were tricked into accepting cosmetics only so that we would later accept boosters and other conveniences or gameplay advantages and so on. Pay to win models may be a thing of the past, but it's a hollow victory; cash shops became standard as a compromise to appease whales.

Ye, Yoshi-P and his team are absolute champions, but at the end of the day, Square Enix is still a corporation and they're gonna make money any way they feel they can get away with. That said, I personally don't mind the cash shop cuz while i'm playing at least, I forget it even exists. Most stuff there is fairly reasonably priced as well.
I am like 80% sure that were it up to Yoshi P, they probably wouldn't have a cash shop. But FF14 is good in spite of Square Enix and not because of it.

@@proy3 Square Enix also recently completely and utterly crashed with several games that made no sales whatsoever, so you can bet they pressured yoship into the cash shop previews.
To be honest this game is still extremely cheap to play. It is way cheaper than literally any F2P game will be if you actually want to be relevant at endgame. WoW, GW2, ESO all have cash shops. GW2 doesn't have a sub but does lock the really shiny stuff behind loot boxes so its arguably much worse, it also has a legal cash to gold exchange. I haven't played ESO in a few years now but back then I did have to buy it, and it had a cash shop anyways. EVE also has a cash shop and legal cash to gold exchange, so does WoW. I don't like cash shops, just to be clear, but its just kind of what gaming has degraded to across the board. The only way to stop it is to stop giving companies money, but that will never happen. The team has been quite resistant to integrating it into the game more but square is a shitty company overall with one good dev team left. It's kind of a wonder the devs have managed to hold out as long as they have.

See I'm fine with the cash shop existing, I really don't mind paying for extra stuff, but the prices are honestly way too high for single character items. If they were account wide, maybe they'd be more acceptable. But they aren't and honestly at most the outfits should be $5. Not $18.
I totally agree, it wasn't so bad at first with a few things like extra retainers and such. Now they are just flogging the crap out of it, with emotes, minions, mounts, gear
I've bought 1 thing from the cash shop back in heavensward, it was the fat moogle mount because i wanted one 2-person mount... i still believe it was overpriced, but was something i wanted and i am (sadly) an adult so I ponied up for that abomination of a mount.
There is at least one 'free' permanent mount in game now that is two-seater, unfortunately you have to grind ShB EX trials like a maniac for it... Luckily, I am insane.

As someone who used to play "Other MMO", I find myself just grateful the Mogstation outfits don't absolutely destroy everything else put in the game. But once again, just better of a bad thing, really. It's odd to me that it's controversial not to like the cash shop, when it's otherwise common practice to call them scummy.

Having my previous main MMO by Guild Wars 2, fuck pretty much everything about the Cash Shop there. It always had just better cosmetics, a ton of quality of life items like infinite mining tools and trash gear dismantler and it only got worse since 2018. I largely stopped playing in 2020 but I know some of the stupidly flashly shit they put into it while actual new content gets a recolored armor set.
I dunno I think Other MMO can get away with it since it has a much larger catalogue of outfits to choose from and there aren't many outfits in the Cash Shop at all. FF14's cash shop is significantly more egregious then Other MMO's
@@Dantarn I'm not entirely sure we're talking about the same Other MMO, but if so, then in that case it's less outfits and more unique mounts while a lot of in-game ones are recolors (kind of like the GW2 example above, though with outfits).

My main problem with the cash shop really is that it has old events rewards on it making it impossible for them to put them back in the game as event rewards without risking backlash. Yes I want that dote emote and yes I want the cheer emotes but it's annoying that I have to pay 10$ to get them (and those are the cheap ones)

For two reasons: The first is that it triggers your FOMO. You might not be willing to pay $2-$7 for an emote ( I can’t find a $10 one, although there’s a single $12 one). But part of the brain doesn’t want to have to make that decision again or deny you something for the bad juice, so you’re willing to keep paying that sub so you can get the next one that comes out ‘for free’. The second is to support the old players. If they offer repeats of events, then old players won’t see a point of socializing the event or continuing their subs if nothing new is available. There’s also a sense of smugness they can get that if they show you /dote and you suddenly have it, they can rest easy knowing /you/ had to pay money for it when they didn’t. Because their minds won’t do the math on the $140 a year since that emote came out means they paid more than a new player with three months and one emote does.
If XIV lasts long enough for YoshiP to stop leading it, you can be sure Squenix execs will be more than happy to load that cash shop with BS while killing the game with trademark Squenix's bad decisions.

He forgot what's most annoying to me - retainers. Try to get into crafting/housing with 2 of them. Also they are an indirect way for squenix to sell gil, because having 9 of them go on high level ventures is a very considerable and consistent income.
What's funny is this technically isn't even part of the cash shop. You have to do it through the mog station. But yeah, it's not possible to be a omnicrafter or do housing without at the very least a 3rd retainer. Also you need 4 retainers to get all of the venture rewards (one of dps, and each dol) unless you want to reset their level and level them all over again.
Yeah I don't mind the idea. But they make way too many items so you have to buy extra if you want more. I like on Elder Scrolls how you use in game gold to buy upgrades, but also can buy them with money. I don't like how dungeons on eso are locked behind a pay wall, but then again its no sub either so its not too bad really. You can't have a $15 sub fee and then charge $15 per mount, or $3 for extra space every month
Yoship straight up said he really really REALLY did not want to have anything related to the shop visible or accessible in-game, and even dreamfitting is a step too far in his eyes but he knows just how badly some players wanted it as the best you could do otherwise is wait for someone else to buy it then click “try on” when you see them

I think people would raise more of a stink about the cash shop if the game didn't constantly add new cosmetics into the game. As of now, there's just enough to keep most players tamed. But you are right, once SE starts fucking the game up (may it never happen), the cash shop will be immediately attacked en mass.
Agreed. As Chair pointed out the big reason why people don't criticize the cash shop as much is because of the good will the FFXIV team has maintained and obtained. Well that the game is overall good to the average player. I think it was like this for WoW too until it started becoming more of a mess. Same goes for other types of cash shops.

Like saying that devs developed the game around a cash shop instead of being a good game or something (a criticism I heard for New World and WoW the past several months).
I love FFXIV and will continue to play it for as long as it is enjoyable, but I will probably never buy an item from the cash shop. Buying mounts feels cheap, buying outfits - I mean I care about how my character looks (now) but I don't care *that* much. Buying emotes is the only thing that really gets me wanting, and even then it's really only Play Dead because that emote is BiS and everyone knows it. Still not going to do it, but if I were to buy anything it'd be that. I used the free Fantasia because I couldn't stand my Viera's dumb blank-slate nothing-behind-the-eyes expressions, but I'm perfectly happy now with my Au'Ra. I'm not gonna hate on anyone for using a skip but I myself will never use one, I'm too attached to the apparently old-school mindset that the leveling journey is a key part of the game, and even getting new expansion jobs at level 50/60/70/etc is a bit overwhelming because trying to figure out what my buttons do when I'm getting so many at once is a bit much. There's someone in my FC who seems like they're addicted to class boosts, they talk about "leveling a new job" but really what they mean is "buying a job level skip and seeing if they like it" and while sure, it's their money, it still feels odd to me.
This is coming from someone who refuses to boosr and has been omni levelling, but I see their point. The game isnt too complex, especially after playing through a single class, and the classes are more alike than they are different with mostly same fundamental concepts. There may be like one hurdle, but thats it. It is telling that they release new characters such as rpr or sage at a high level, and no one complains about it (if anything, I hear that they need more complexity by release level). “But money”: even low-paid people can earn enough for a boost in an hour or two. Id reckon for many it’d be a half hour of work. Compared to 20-30 min for a single levelling dungeon that does about a single level at max, youre looking at 10’s if not hundreds if hours playing what amounts to a untrue representation of the class through rather boring grind. The cost is negligible, in that sense. I do it mostly for pride, and a bit because I enjoy the grind and dungeoning, even low level stuff.
Yea I'll likely never buy level skips for the "overwhelming" aspect of suddenly having a ton of new abilities and you have no idea how they work with each other. I'd like to mention I'm still a sprout, but when I picked up the red mage job at level 50 I was like "oh man that's a lot of tool tips." Still havent actually practiced that job, I just defaulted to my main dragoon. Stricking dummies help to figure out your combos but unfortunately stricking dummies dont fight back, so it's a little harder to learn what everything else does.
Kind of a luke warm take. Like... The only people who defend the cash shop are the "Well, I'm rich so I can take advantage of it" crowd and the "Any criticism against my game is a personal insult against me" crowd. Or, I guess, the "It exists on the internet, thus I must argue" crowd.

I have two (three) rules when i comes to a Cash Shop. 1. Divorced from the in game gameplay. I don't want pop ups. I don't want a menu buttons while I'm snooping through the menus. 2. You cannot buy anything that can directly ruin the flow of gameplay. I don't mind story skips and what not. Cause they're there for people who WANT THEM. not *NEED THEM*. Cash shops are for WANTS not NEEDS. 3. Make sure you have a lot of sales on a variety of things. I'm wiling ti wait an INSANE amount of time to save even a few pennies.
Story skip, in my opinion, is the single most OP thing they sell in that shop. I'm not kidding when I say I have 400 hours in this game and I'm still in Stormblood because I hate the MSQ. Seeing the skip in the cash shop is like seeing a second base game price that i have to buy to actually play the game. That skip should be obtainable ingame, even if it's behing a grind.

Just gotta say, the prices in the CS are seriously taking the piss. 10$+ just for an outfit? Over 20$ for a carbuncle mount? Several dollars for a basic emote? One can purchase an excellent indie game (or year old AAA game) for 20 dollars. 2 if you look a bit. Comparing that to a single outfit in a monthly subscription game makes it look rightly ridiculous
I waited like 4 months to buy the maid outfit cause I refused to spend like 18 bucks on a digital outfit. I’d be ok if everything was 10 dollars or less but a lot of the stuff too pricey.
I honestly don't like most indie games because the production values aren't high enough. Maybe that is too shallow. But I also spend 0 money on cosmetics.
And to make matters worse the outfits and emotes are single-character only. Cosmetics that expensive should at least be a one-time purchase that applies to all your characters.
I think the biggest issue I have with the cash shop personally is their pricing over time. I've been playing for about a year and a half now, but even then, it isn't hard to see that Square Enix saw how profitable the shop could be and started to exploit it. The prices of current armor sets have grown to be nearly (if not over) double the price of older ones. The notion of account wide items is largely forgotten outside of very expensive items, or pre-order bonuses. I could reasonably justify spending $18 dollars on the school outfits if all my characters got access to it. But for just one at that price? It's a horrible deal.
Ironic how I briefly touched on this subject in a video and got absolutely berated for it, but because Misshapen Chair said it's apparently alright. I will agree that cashshops in general are terrible, but it could honestly be so much worse. A lot of people wont see it this way though because FFXIV is their beloved game that cannot do any wrong.
Without sounding like I'm defending the cash shop the "try before you buy" feature would have been missed by literally everyone since it is tied to an in game action that absolutely no one uses unless there was a notification for it.
I do not like the cash shop because the existence of fanstasia means we will probably never get the option to change eye and skin color at the aestethician which makes me a sad boy with green eyes a shade lighter than i wanted them to be
I'm noticing a lot of people here are claiming that because they've played game X that was monetized heavily makes game Y's slightly less intrusive monetization ethical. Unethical or slightly less unethical is still unethical.
I always felt that the Cash Shop was just scummy when we already pay a sub, AND buy every expansion at full price On top of that the prices are just insane. $18 for an outfit? That's undyable, and has to be worn all together? That almost 2 months of my sub. $30 for a mount? That's almost 3 months sub. The cash shop is absolutely my biggest gripe about this game
There's 2 seater mounts in game and none of the items offer a player advantage. Don't be mad at people with disposable income wanting to spend it on cosmetics.

Making people buy previous expansions is pretty horseshit as well - like they're literally forcing me to pay for content I actively don't want to do, because nobody's running it and I just wanna get to max level to actually play the game with everyone else.
I like the cash shop, and y'all seem to me like an unreasonable mob actually. My reasoning: when I see the results of my money being funneled into the right things (even if via a black box), I don't get the urge to seethe about the harmless ways a game profits from my pocket. Yes, paid cosmetics are ENTIRELY a superfluous luxury, if you spent a little time mix-and-matching thousands of glam items already in-game you'd know that le Limsan glam ain't exactly the whole enchilada. In the age where the standard of GaaS cash shops is such that directly impacts the gameplay, going out of your way to talk shit about mog store is entirely like demanding trans rights in the middle ages. There will come the time, god willing, but now ain't it. Luckily there's new content in 6.1 to occupy your restless minds for a while
This villain arc is great. I didn't mind the cash shop until they put in the pop-up with this patch. No matter how much the translations from the live letter say that yoshi-p was apprehensive about putting the shop in the game, I think it's a bridge too far. And to me it also doesn't matter that "you have to go out of your way to use the feature because you have to go to the inn", that's not going out of my way anyway, I always log out in the inn. Maybe I would mind it less without the pop-up. And even though it's kind of useful (I guess) to see how stuff looks on you before you buy it, I'd still rather have it completely outside of the game. I just don't like them going in this direction.
@@Aritulpa Only the once though. There's no other way in game to indicate there's a new option in the inn logout menu. A player that doesn't read patch notes or engage with ffxiv content outside of the game itself and never uses an Inn would otherwise be completely unaware of the feature.
Might be a hot take but personally, I don't think cash shops are *inherently* bad. If the developers want to effort into a piece of content of any kind with the intention of charging extra money for it, I think that's fair. I don't see it as being any different than paying for a new expansion every two years. I only have a problem when devs do things like block off content originally intended for the main game behind dlc, or tie basic progression to micro transactions (i.e. Battlefront II at launch)

@@goranstojanov1160 This is true, but also a case of players not always knowing what's best for a game and developers caving to their requests. Keep in mind that there are also significantly more people playing this game now than there may have been in say, ARR that wouldn't know about this in the first place, and the overall job design is a lot more forgiving now that cross-class abilities aren't a thing as they were in the past anymore. That being said, it doesn't change that any form of "pay for convenience" is fundamentally very damaging to a game. It might make sense in mobile games where it's free to play and the developer and publisher need to profit without selling player data to advertisers (mobile games probably do this anyways regardless), but in a subscription-based game people are already paying monthly. Unfortunately the cash shop or the boosts aren't really going anywhere, but a potential band-aid solution to this may be to have some sort of subscription credit/rewards system, where players also get crysta or some other XIV-exclusive credit to spend on cash shop items, or just put back into more sub time, which is just passively earned through paying for subscription time. That way people who are already paying customers at least have some way of getting those items without having to spend more on a game they're already paying monthly for, although I doubt something like this could ever happen since it would definitely cut into the store's profits as it is.

When I found out about the mogshop, I almost decided to not subscribe because of it. I absolutely loathe it, it doesn't deserve to exist in a game that you not only have to buy, but also buy each individual expansion, and then pay to play it on top. I do think the level skips fantasia are the least egregious parts of it though; your character is kind of meant to be permanent, and the level skips, assuming you buy it at level 1 or similar, are roughly priced at how much of their subscription a casual player would have to use to level up the class to that point (Imagine you login, do a few roulettes, and log out). Based off some people's responses, no, they're def hot takes. Some are going as far to say disliking Kaiten going away means you hate disabled people, since it means they have to press less during burst making it more easy to access. Because as we know Kaiten was 100% the thing keep people with disabilities from playing SAM.
@@Jaridavin I read comments on the last two videos and they all show pretty much unquestionable agreement, especially regarding job changes. I'm sure there are people somewhere that disagree, but from my perspective those are indeed rather cold takes. Personally I do find the change about Kaiten rather weird and unnecessary, but I don't think it's as bad as people doomposting about it say.
Only Cashshop acceptable are in F2P Games if they are not P2Win. There is this small mmo from a handfull of polish devs that costs 20 bucks and has no sub. Had much fun for 200 hundred hours there and they have a cash shop with only cosmectics. If you open it, you get a pop up "Nothing here is giving you an advantage, only buy if you want to support us. Thanks" Don't care about cosmectics, never bought anything in WoW of FF14, but for that game, i bought something every few weeks just for support despite never using it ingame.
Literally everything in the FFXIV cash shop is frippery or wanting to be a lazy bastard for skipping story/levels. I have no issue with the former, but the latter? Not for me. Also, not into Glamour much -- but I have purchased a few of the account-wide mounts and character-level emotes because fun. Also, I don't mind spending a little extra to support what I consider is a game that rewards me far beyond my sub cost already.
I don't like cash shops either. But between having a free to play game that sells skins on a shop like LoL and having to pay 15 dollars every month even wtihout a cash shop I would choose the first. Why? Because 15 dollars a month it's a lot of money, money that I well never spend in skins. And I know most pople in the world are like this, this is one of the reasons why LoL was so huge worldwide. Maybe in america where 15 dollars it's almost nothing they prefer the second option, but in some countries 15 dollars is what you are payed per day at your job. In FF14 case where you have to pay every month, buy expansions and having a cash shop on top of that it is kinda too much, I would prefer to not be a thing. The cash shop has a lot of things that I disagree, I do think they are going overboard on some things, but like everything in life there are levels to it. And it's getting to a level that I dislike, let's see if it doesn't "level up" aymore.

i think having a cash shop for a sub game is scummy by definition (and nowhere near the best version, i think that is just copium at work). I kinda accept when games like Guildwars 2 do it since they are pay2play but in those games it introduces a negative way that the devs design new content where cash shop stuff is extremely blinged up and in game rewards get less interesting.
Cash shop, Me: the alternate market board. Seriously at least the shop is not as bad as other mmos, where shove into your face. At least the cosmetics in games are nice and not case where all in-game look like garbage and mogstation only has good looking glamours Aside from fantasia at most i just buy mounts of mogstations i really want. The cosmetics like clothes non really grabbed my attention.
I'm pretty much a cash shop whale. I buy the full outfits for single glamour items, I have every minion and every emote, every Collector's Edition, pay out for the dyes, and I bought the new Paissa mount Day 1. The only real issue I have is dyes in the cash shop. Mounts and the like are whatever (I mostly use the Fae Gwiber and the tank, both in-game mounts), but making certain gear colors almost impossible to get unless you're either an in-game oligarch or a whale is annoying. However, given that I used to play ESO, I'd say the FF14 cash shop is a welcome relief in comparison. If FF14 ever tries to implement lootboxes, kick up the biggest possible stink you can.
The only reason I don't mind the fact the cash shop exist while the game is pay 2 play is because MMo just don't bring that much cash. That don't excuse the horrible pricing and retainers too.
If an item exists to be sold then it really isn't optional. It might be optional for most people, but someone has to pay for it to justify it's existence. It has to appeal to someone in the same way that pay to win garbage does.
You have no idea how much flak I got for merely stating in Novice Network: "I have spent $172 off game + expansion + monthly sub in 6 months so why do they need more money?" Thanks for the video though now I can react to it and get more exposure like a good leech. :^)
Well, that's understandable because that's a really dumb question. SE is a publicly traded company, if they could they would clear your wallet, just like any other company. There are some good things about the cash shop though, for example all the money it earns are put back into the game instead of something like OSRS situation where they just use the earnings to appease investors by paying out dividends instead of developing more content. So far i've not touched the cash shop as of 700 hours into the game, i will buy 2 or 3 emotes eventually but that's all i'm interested in currently.
Cash shops can get fucked imho. I've paid more for this game than any other in my lifetime, and I'm still paying for it. The cash shop is tolerable right now in that I can basically ignore it, but it's existence is a threat to the game. If SE ever wants to they could make it really, really fucking awful for everyone. And if you trust SE on the whole then you're blinded by nostalgia and your love for this one specific game.
The fact that they basically said "Yeah NFTs won't work, but if we find a way to make it work we'd do it, it's a good technology" is fucking a massive red flag
@@Saintlel Yoshi-P has directly stated NFTs will not come to XIV, and given that he's on the board of directors and has full control over the game, it's not really something to get worked up over. XIV is their most profitable game of all time so it would be a massive risk, and they know the community would be up in arms if they tried pulling a stunt like that. I think the biggest issue with the mogstation is that they're willing to add items like Cruise Chaser to the store, which should've absolutely been an in-game reward. That move didn't sit right with me at all.
@@Corvus7159 My own hypothesis on the Cruise Chaser mount being the cash shop is 'accessibility'. Anyone can get it if they have the money, versus locking it behind an Ultimate Raid, which only a small handful of players would ever realistically complete.
I don’t think the cash shop sucks because in my years of playing the game there is absolutely nothing in their that is a must buy it’s not even predatory. It’s bad unless you have a legit problem using a fantasia every other week like TOO MANY PPL DO (seriously it’s weird). There’s not a single item in that cash shop that’s overwhelming better than what you can get in-game for me.
If you subscribe to "capitalism is evil", fair enough. If you don't, why expect game companies to be more "pure" in intent than other businesses? Companies exist to make as much money as possible without choking off their revenue stream. Companies make games to make money. That's it. The cash shop exists because it can. The fact that there's also a sub makes no difference. It is what the market will bear. Are you as bothered by the cost of a movie ticket, streaming service, gallon of milk, t-shirt, automobile? Do you get as upset about the marketing techniques employed by grocery stores, the fashion industry, the entertainment industry? Every business tries to manipulate buyer preference and part you from your money. Game companies are neither more nor less "evil" or greedy than any other business.

I have a general detestment for cash shops so I pretty much agree with all of this. I already spend 50$ for a two month time card + retainers so i really aint up for blowing 15 dollars on a fuckin coat. 3 bucks, maybe but unless i get given one of those visa prepaid cards on a birthday or Christmas or whatever i tend to ignore the shop with fervent prejudice
The annoying thing is, that the cash shop is the thing that holds FFXIV alive, cause SE uses the sub money from FFXIV for other games and now probably for fucking Blockchain..

This is why I think, based on my experience with other games, is why FFXIV has the "best" iteration of the cash shops, though the best iteration is to not have a pricey cash shop. FFXIV doesn't push you to go to the cash shop, except in the new patch the one time you go into the inn (apparently Yoshi P did say in a Live Letter that he was personally against it but the higher powers deemed it so). The advertising is minimal all things considered (like an ad or two on the FFXIV Launcher, but if you use another Launcher you will not see it).
to me FFXIV has a good cash shop because i think it doesn't look as good as anything you can obtain in-game and also gave me a sense of accomplishment to actually become a fashion myself as a broke non-cashwhale player
I used that new preview thing last night and looked through all the outfits, and just sat there thinking "none of these are as good as earnable ones". There are a few mounts that I like, but really nothing has even got me close to buying anything from the cash shop.
I didn't get the point of this video. Ok, you hate cash shops. But why? If the cash shop went away, would you then complain that the game costs money to buy and a sub to keep playing? And more importantly why? How would you make things better?

Well, it's a game that i have to pay 60 reais every month, even after i paid the full price for It, 250, and bought every expansion for the same 250, and, after all that, they still want me to pay more to get some of the cool stuff. I love this game, it's just bad lucky that the minimun wage it's 1200 per month here, i probably would't buy It even If i could, but i think that square ia abusing the good reputation of the game to extort the players. 7 dollars for a fuking emote, 18 for a dress, if you want to fuck me that much mr. Square Enix, at least pay the dinner, please
As far as buying level skips goes, I would agree that it takes far less time to learn how to play a boosted job than it does to start from level 1. There are also endless job guides out there to help you learn things like rotations for jobs. What I personally wouldn't ever consider skipping is the game itself as that's part of the reason I'm paying for it monthly. I understand that some people don't care about story and lore and just want to jump to the end but for me that's something I've always appreciated about not just MMOs but video games in general so I want that experience at least once (and have currently experienced it three times). Also, while I'll agree that the game doesn't teach you how to play any particular job it DOES teach you game mechanics with every dungeon, trial, and raid. SE even went back and redid the 2.0 content to better match the design language that they've fine-tuned throughout many expansions so that once a player has seen a mechanic once they have a general idea of how it works and can execute it correctly (or at least better) in the future. Obviously, some mechanics are more difficult than others but it's all very doable and LEARNABLE by doing.
I spent $80 about 9 months ago to order the Encyclopedia Eorzea from Amazon in Japanese, because the NA one hadn't been released yet, just to get Matoya's Hat. I'd say you're right, Chair.
I didn't care too much, I didn't like it, but it didn't bother me, but the addition of Cruise Chaser made me sour, reusing the asset of a beloved boss for easy cash, and then everyone defending it with 'its better than it being a reward for doing hard content' when the entire reason cruise is beloved, is because his raid was extremely difficult ;_; Seeing cruise being used a store mount, and seeing people use it and 90% of players being ok with it, soured me off the game so much it was unreal. Also, locking minions/orchestrions/emotes behind real life purchases that cost £30+ (to those awful £200+ statues that usually end up arriving broken) is just an awful practice, it both ruins the collector community, and exploits desperate collectors.
gotta disagree on the boosts because leveling doesnt teach you how to play your job properly either leveling 1-90 organically does not mean you will be good at anything
It's the sad truth. I'd argue you do at least learn about common mechanics that use universal markers, but the only way to actually learn your job is to read the tooltips and maybe check out what openers other people are using if you don't feel like theorycrafting your own.
I have felt like I was screaming into the void for YEARS when it comes to criticism of ff14 because it seems like all of the places the game is popular is overwhelmingly, obscenely positive. Like to the point where ANY criticism of the game is evil and wrong. I definitely agree with the cash shop being bad, especially when they lock what could have been cool in-game rewards behind it, and especially especially with seasonal stuff. Seems like each year the stuff seasonal events offer for free get worse and worse, and the stuff offered on the cash shop better and better. Kinda lame. Also mounts. Don't put mounts on the cash shop.
I've yet to see an actual comparison but I've been playing for about 5-6 years now and I can say that the rewards from the events aren't consistently getting worse, and the cash shop has remained pretty level. We had some recent bad events, but that's because of the lasting effects of the disruption from COVID - the seasonal events are very low on the list. Hell, for the last All Saint's Wake we essentially got a mini-dungeon with unique mechanics, as well as the return of the "Turn yourself into estinien and make him do the e-girl dance" manor.
Also, think about it in a gamesmanship sort of way. If Square doesn't do it, another competitor WILL do it and get more profits. In the world of investing and finances that is a BIG no. I think FFXIV's cash shop is probably one of the least intrusive of any game I played in recent years, as cash shops, unreasonably priced DLC, heck even the story of the game pushing you to the cash shops are almost in every game.
