📜 The History of the Field of the Cloth of Gold: Royal Frenemies - The tournament kicks off and quickly becomes a very careful balancing act of making sure that both kings are on even ground. This 18-day party is probably one of the most detailed and carefully planned diplomatic events in history. But will it be enough to cement the peace between England and France and to ratify the Universal Peace treaty?

... Okay, that last bit about Henry made me genuinely really sad. That said, this sounds like an awesome setting for a D&D campaign. A party of adventurers trying their best to ensure two monarch's have a good feast, with the biggest threats being their two childish egos.
@tatefranklin4761

I actually ran a very similar game in a long form campaign a while back. The party wound up pissing everyone off so badly that half of them had to use ball bearings and a darkness spell to avoid being killed by an angry mod, while the other half pulled a Knight's Tale, and disguised themselves as a bunch of knight's they'd accidentally accosted. Let's just say, civil war followed shortly after.

Henry VIII doesn't deserve to be remembered for anything but the cluster something that he created with his petulance and bad character. He caused his wives to be killed after having their names dragged through the mud. He killed good people (ie, the trio of Thomases). caused a religious civil war that had thousands. tortured and killed, led his two daughters to try to kill each other... altogether a trash king. He started with education, looks, money and the crown. If he hadn't been a petulant, spoiled brat, he could have left a great legacy.

I imagine that the feasting would have been really different from the Hundred Years’ War. While Portuguese merchants brought back spices from India and the rest of Asia, Spanish conquistadors were returning with exotic crops and animals from their New World colonies, and inspired by Renaissance Italy, a whole new system of table etiquette was made common across Europe’s great halls.

@@krankarvolund7771 The spices were very rare/small in quantity and very expensive in the classical/middle ages, then after the ottomans emerged, they made the prices even more inaccessible and even came to completly block the spice trade from india to europe, that's when the portuguese made their voyage. And no, it did not make them "a little cheaper", it made them a whole lot cheaper. By sea and without ottoman interfierence, they didn't have to pay any tribute (did pay sometimes on the places where they stopped for maintenence, obviously), which made the spices much larger in quantity and much cheaper in price. The monetary benefits from those spices the portuguese brought in their first voyages was so large, in fact, that they could, per 1 voyage, make 60 times the money it cost them to make said 1 voyage. The ottomans also didn't have a monopoly on the spice trade, they benefited heavily from it, no doubt, but the ones who held the most control were the sultanates of the arabian peninsula and the somalian/tanzanian coast

He was not supposed to be king in the first place, so he grew up somewhat fancy free and dedicated to sport, jousting and the arts while his brother Arthur was prepared to be the next king. When Arthur died unexpectedly Henry was thrust into the spotlight and somewhat unprepared. This is when he started eating more and thinking less; his obsession with getting a son cost him four wives, friendship with France, the friendship of the Catholic Church and eventually the last part of his lands in Europe (though Mary lost that one).

As a grad student of history researching sports, I find the similarities of this event with modern day international sports spectacles like the Olympics hard to miss. Francis: Hey Henry, what's up buddy? How magnificent is our tourney today right? Henry: Yeah. Can you feel the WIND blow at your face? Francis: haha no, my CUTTING EDGE clothing is too heavy. Is that the Duke of Gloucester wearing it?? Guess if he wants to wrestle with me. Henry: No he doesn't, because I would arrest him anyways, take a look at my bow. It is so welsh... the welsh like going into France, you know? Francis: I feel like we are going to be friends forever, man. Charles V: Hello there. Do you guys like wool?

We need a series on Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire, who was also Charles I of Spain, the first sole king of that country, after Ferdinand and Isabella. His life was also eventful: -Spanish Conquest of Americas. -Lots of wars against the French in Italy (Charles V even challenged Francis I to a duel, to end a battle with heavy losses from both sides). -Defense of the Mediterranean against the Ottomans and their pirates. -Beginning of Protestant Reformation (ironically, Charles V had some respect to Luther).

And also his role in the centralisation of the 17 provinces (the low countries) , continuing the progress of the Burgundian dukes (Maria of Burgundy was his grandmother and you saw of the previous dukes like Philips the Bold, John the fearless and Philips the Good in the 100 years war and Joan of arc series), where he also had spend a lot of time since he was born in Ghent.

6:52 that's how I am when in trying to pretend to get alone with my enemy in front of my parents with the pastors daughter parents, while she damaged both my and my little brother when I was 16 and she was 14 but she had a growth spirt looking like if shes older than me, and when she went to my room playing the godfather on my laptop, I freaked out and she just hugged me and said shes sorry and looked at my eyes for 10 seconds and frickin kissed me twice and almost got caught twice, I have to keep quiet or I'll be blamed by my parents, and when I told her months later why she did that, her excuse is that it was the chocolated she had. Or that face is when I have to keep a supporting face when I saw my ex who is my childhood friend when I was a kid and used me to get her boyfriend jealous and get back to her and I saw her at my aunt wedding to a person who I consider a well deserved uncle and good friend
