That sums up the early 5th Doctor perfectly. I have always imagined an entire season set in an 1920s - 40s village. As with Devil's End in "The Daemons" it's one of his homes he returns to through out his personas. A home away from the home of the TARDIS. In fact, long term readers of Doctor Who Magazine, will know of the town Stockbridge. It's a place he's returned to in comics and even Big Finish audios. Very much what I'm thinking of. The 5th always looked happiest in a setting of English simpler times. An Earth version of the Eye of Orion? When it came to science fiction he didn't fit well. Just not cricket.

I love these moments where the Doctor just gets to have a good time and enjoy the cultures, games and traditions of Earth where it won't cause a paradox in the space-time continuum, and then share them back at home on Gallifrey like the 4th Doctor sharing jelly babies.

I love the little detail that Nyssa and Adric, being alien, are utterly baffled by cricket. The Doc himself must've picked it up in an earlier incarnation (at a guess I'd say the rather athletic Third), because he himself was equally baffled by it in episode 8 of The Daleks' Master Plan.
