Mountains can have a certain energy to them and mountain called Split, located in the High Sierra Mountain Range in eastern California, has an energy with a dark side. Split Mountain is a 14,000 foot peak with a perfect couloir dividing two prominent summits. Visually, it’s a line that begs to be skied yet is guarded by a series of icefalls, rock steps and blue ice patches that make it extremely challenging. On top of that, the towering walls of the couloir present significant rockfall hazard along with an upper basin that can create dangerous avalanche conditions. It’s a line that requires patience, perfect timing…and many many attempts. Over the last 4 years, Cody Townsend, Nick Russell and cinematographer Bjarne Salén have been waiting, trying, scoping and learning about the history of this line, its moods, its conditions and its energy to successfully, and safely, ski it.

I am constantly amazed by Bjarne, he is climbing and skiing this near impossible and dangerous terrain right next to Cody, he is also capturing it in world class cinematography. He has to concentrate on not only not dying, but making sure everything they are doing is captured on camera and looks amazing. He is an elite ski mountaineer and cinematographer.

I love how Bjarne could sense your hesitation and gave the "Listen to your gut. Take a couple of deep breaths and listen to your gut." He knew it and you knew it. Just needed to initiate the group discussion. Nick's response "I'm not going to convince you guys, I think we should climb back out if you're not feeling it." Solid crew!

The fact that you guys show this level of backing out and committing to safety, will spill on to a whole generation of beginner backcountry skiers and definitely save lives for years to come. You guys are building a whole ski culture around smart decision making and respectful group dialogues in the mountains. So grateful for that every time I’m the only girl in a group of dudes and something doesn’t feel right. Same goes for guys speaking up to other guys I guess, especially when there are different experience levels etc. THANK you for empowering those doubts and smart decisions, I’d rather speak up and back out than end up in a scary or life threatening situation.

My experience with Skimo and mountaineering in general is that you should basically expect your prospective feature or peak to be a Recon mission with the "possibilty" of skiing or climbing if things fall into place and all parties are in agreement. A day spent in the mountains and coming home safe is always better

Been guiding since 1977 with lots of time around 4,000 meters. Simply LOVED the excellent decision making, the bailing when it wasn't right and then getting the line when it was OK. There is so much learning here. I hope many, many young "hard hitters" will watch, reflect, and learn. A master class on how it is done safely and well! Barvo.

This was a great episode! At 64, I am now part of the old not bold ski mountaineer clan. Of course the cinematography by Bjarne was yet again fantastic and the line unbelievable but, the focus on decision making was great to see. Far too often this aspect of alpine work is glossed over. I could spend hours sharing moments I’ve spent with my team coming to terms with risk acceptance or voting to bail out as a group.

Amazing as always. I'd love to see a behind the scenes bonus feature where you talk more about the nuts and bolts of filming these lines. I see the notice in the disclaimer about using drones within while respecting wilderness zone restrictions, I'd love to hear more of the discussion where you & Bjarne talk about things like what camera gear/setups you decide to take on any given project and how you make those filming decisions. I think it would be really neat to hear the decision making process, and maybe talk about the editing/assembling process where you figure out how to get these shots, all the pre-planning that goes into shooting something like this, and then the needing to potentially improvise/change plans when you get on the mountain. I'd like to hear the process of getting the best quality you can while not compromising safety and how you make those kinds of decisions.

Hats off to capturing your honest on-site narration, your thoughts and feelings throughout this Split Mt. saga. I've been waiting for this new episode for awhile, and it does not disappoint! I have been a back country telemark skier for many years, never at the level you and your circle of friends are at, but I have skinned in the dark to watch the sunrise. In 2019 I suffered a fatal cardiac arrest while walking my dog. I was told that I would never ski, mountain bike, raft or canoe again. I said wat CV h me. I am not able to ski big peaks unless I'm on a chairlift, but I do what I can do. Thanks to you and Bjarne for the most excellent series and doing it responsibly! All the best to you guys!!

Dude! I love that you included your bit about what you consider good style. Its all about skiing the lines you want, while having fun AND coming home at the end of the day. And if you think you can't clearly make those things happen, then you are better off finding a different method or coming back another time. That's the kind of style I will emulate my whole life. A lot of people say it (and a lot don't), but not on the same stage as you, while skiing such epic lines. Can't wait for more videos.

Pilots should watch this. What a great tutorial about the process of and having the courage to make tough go no go decisions.

It's autumn here in Switzerland and whenever I watch your videos I immediately want to pack my skis and go. You really are role models, keep it up! If everyone had this attitude there would be a lot fewer accidents❤

instincts, instincts, instincts! I've enjoyed this series since 1/50. You have evolved and inspired. Last season, I finally rode Whitneys Mountaineers route from the top. Stay safe!

Sitting here petting my new ski-dog…. He doesn’t yet know the adventure in store…. Paused now at 30:00 after the climb-out after the nod to your wife and boy. Those are the best priorities! Time to watch the rest…. there’s obviously more to tell. Alright, just finished. Cody, you and Bjarne and the whole team truly are doing the sport proud. The decision making, the story telling, the cinematography, the humor and everything, ending with achieving your goal safely… cheers!

The description proves the 50 is often a climbing book at not a ski book. Anyway, you got a sunrise at 14K plus, good on ya’ and yes I cheered BOOYAH when you made bottom.

Big BIG respect. The line may never be there again, but the mountain will! The fact that you came home safe is the most important! Keep up the awesome work!

Strong work! Really great episode too, quite the saga. A hard-fought and well-deserved accomplishment! I used to band birds one day per week along Taboose Creek down in the valley back in the 90s, and from the angle of our study site I'd just sit and stare up at St. Jean all morning, all summer long. It was SUCH an itch to want to ski that thing! Every bit as aesthetic as Split itself from that angle, though obviously way less serious and much more my speed. I went up to ski it with a friend once but he wasn't feeling it, and honestly I think I'm more jealous of your St. Jean descent, so this is inspiring me to get back up there and give it another go. But I have been up quite a handful of times in summer, and it's such a rad zone and one of the best summits in the range. And it looks like Ming got to spend a lot of time chilling among some of my favorite Foxtail Pines down by Red Lake. Looked like Bjarne was digging on those trees too. Always love, love, love the Sierra episodes!
