That “crash damage” comment made about Tsunoda is absolutely wild. He’s crashed once this year and didn’t crash out in the entirety of 2023. Ridiculous and outdated comments.

@bornresaabe
@bornresaabe Месяц назад
Does Yuki deserve a shot? Absolutely. But it seems like most of you don't realize how big of a jump it is, especially in this particular scenario of jumping in half way through the season. It's a whole new ball game of added pressure to perform in top teams fighting for championships. Not just that, you have to perform against someone like Max, it's massive. Look at all the other very solid drivers who have been promoted and failed (Albon, Gasly, Perez). Especially considering it's for the 2nd half of the season. If Yuki doesn't perform it could literally ruin his season and he could end up fighting to stay on the grid. just like what happened to the other guys before him. The logical choice here for this particular scenario is Daniel Ricciardo. He's won 7 races in that exact car before. He is proven to perform with the extra added pressure of being in a top team and against Max. I would argue this is the case even this year as all his best results have literally come when he's been under the most pressure. The car is suited to his driving style. He's in a do or die part of his career now, why not give him that one last chance in the car that made him a legend to begin with. If it doesn't work out, he can retire at the end of the year. Then Red Bull can see Tsunoda vs Lawson up against each other for the remainder of the year and see who can replace Ricciardo for 2025. It's a much better situation for both Lawson and Tsunoda being able to have a pre-season testing and a fresh year to show what they have rather than jumping in now.

I've said before this is the master stroke for RB if they indeed give Checo the boot is to give Danny Ric his "last chance" opportunity over the last 10 races of this season and insert Lawson into the other VCARB seat. It makes total sense. If Daniel thrives, give him another year alongside Max and let Liam prove himself worthy for 2026 or make 2025 the competition for the RB seat between him and Yuki. If Daniel disappoints, you promote one of these two and bring in Hadjar into VCARB. @The_ZeroLine
@The_ZeroLine Месяц назад
It’s so obviously the most sensible path. It’s just become so popular among these new DTS fans to hate DR and love LL for some reason. Daniel likes Max’s setup, knows the RBR team inside out, can handle the spotlight and is the only teammate to beat Max let alone not just get destroyed by him. Like you said, worse case scenario = he’s still mediocre and you drop him at the EOS. Then you promote Yuki and have seats for both Lawson and Hadjar at RB. Why put Lawson under that immense pressure in the RBR seat? And based off what, a 9th at Singapore that would have been a 14th had it not been for 5 unlikely retirements.

RBs own analysis showed that DR was much faster than YT at the last race, if you take the bad pit stop strategy out of the equation, he would have been 8 seconds up over Yuki. People look at the end result and ignore their actual race pace, which RB doesn’t seem to be falling into the trap of doing. DR was 0.3 seconds per lap faster than YT. To quote Fox Sports “Both drivers stopped within a lap of each other - Ricciardo on lap 28 and Tsunoda on lap 29 - and both took new hard tyres, giving us a useful comparison. We’ll look at a 30-lap sample between laps 30 and 60 - after both drivers had completed their out-laps but before Ricciardo was forced to slow for blue flags. Tsunoda started 16.3 seconds ahead of Ricciardo on lap 30. That margin was reduced to 10.4 seconds by the end of lap 60. Both drivers lost time battling other cars during this stint. Subtracting those from the race time gives Ricciardo an extra 1.5 seconds, theoretically reducing his deficit to just 8.9 seconds. That represents a gain of 7.5 seconds on Tsunoda over the stint - or, in other words, 0.3 seconds per representative lap.”

Ricciardo is the obvious pick - proven winning history in a pointy front car with a similar setup to Max for years at Red Bull. Where every other driver has failed in the second half of the season as the car is fine tuned, Ricciardo never had any issues with it (outside the unreliable renault PU's). His performances at Mclaren and VCARB arent a measure of his ability as those cars are not remotely setup for his driving style, the only thing we have is the 2023 test where he was doing front row times in a Red Bull that landed him the AT/VCARB seat Yuki and Liam are wildcards as they have no experience in a pointy car - they'd likely do well for a few races, then like the others - drop off by mid season

I have thought about this very thoroughly. There are only two reasons why Perez still has his seat. 1 - RedBull, as a brand, feels the need to expand into Central and South America. 2 - By having a clear number 2 driver, the chances of Verstappen leaving the team are greatly reduced. Why else would RBR retain such of an underperforming driver? Gasly, Kvyat, Albon. ALL three of them were booted for A LOT, LOT less. So, my conclusion is that RBR is doing everything it can in order to retain its number one driver. If a Tsunoda or a Lawson starts to get a pole position here and there, or worse, a string of victories, that will not make the Verstappen camp very comfortable.

He has looked better than DR for a year. He has 2x the points. Red Bull, after signing Max, haven't made a good driver signing in 7 years. Gasly and Albon are now both solid drivers and on different teams (both let go too early, and did WAY better than Checo has).
