In the original novel, it is said that the mayor is being pressured from the mafia to keep the beaches open and the town profitable. The movie never really touches on it, but it explains a lot

I remember watching something during Shark Week where they were talking about the production of Jaws and it's effect on how people see sharks, and one shark researcher said he and his colleages laugh when Hooper names the species of shark, since the actual name they used wasn't the scientific name of the great white shark. It was actually the name of a type of dogfish only a little bit bigger then a man's hand.
@lyndoncmp5751

Hooper says the correct name for the great white, Carcharodon Carcharias.

This is just an amazing film…the shot choices and composition are frakkin incredible

The reason you see so little of the shark is because the mechanical beast kept breaking down. However, it was a blessing in disguise: not merely because it increased the tension but because the "shark" was so unrealistic it reduced the film's credibility. It's made worse by the cuts of a real shark which is sinuous and flexible, compared to the fake shark which looks like rubber stretched over a metal framework operated by levers.

I actually like how we didn’t see the shark too much, really made it scarier

Dunno if you're going to bring this up, but the comparisons to Moby Dick were even bigger in the book, where Quint gets killed by the harpoon's cable getting caught around his neck and dragging him into the water.

When the shark shows up while Brody is ladling out the chum, Spielberg chose very specifically to not use the music by John Williams, as an audience, we had been conditioned to expect the shark { even though we hadn't had a good look at it yet } whenever we heard that music. Here, Spielberg and John Williams caught us off guard! We just got played like a violin! Not that I'm complaining, just explaining.

I can't believe I never saw this Film Den episode! You look good as a redhead! Speaking of Jaws, I remember when I was a kid, I used to be so fascinated by sharks. The Shark Tank at Sea World was one of my favorite places to visit. I loved seeing all the different sharks up close! But then my mom decided it would be a good idea to let me watch Jaws. And Jaws III. And gave me a book about shark attacks that were made by Great Whites. Let's just say, I'm not as thrilled with those creatures as I used to be, and I refuse to go into any shark tank exhibit, at Sea World or otherwise, without thinking the sharks are going to start ramming the glass in an attempt to get inside, and eat everyone a la Jaws III. I still get chills when I watch the opening scene of Jaws. It freaked me out so bad the first time I saw it as a kid! You know, I never even thought about that comparison of Quint to Captain Ahab and Jaws to Moby Dick before. But when you point it out, I can see the connection. I'm curious though, did you ever explain why you felt there were so many similarities between Jaws and the original Halloween?

This may sound weird but for some reason I remember watching jaws 2 more as a kid than the first one. I know it's not a good movie but I have sort of a soft spot for it as a guilty pleasure of that makes sense.

11:58 a few weeks ago I got to see Jaws in theaters as part of a promotional thing. I went in knowing nothing other than it was a shark movie and some of the details of why Amity would try to downplay the shark, and that scene legit made me jump in my seat.

Hey Dinah! ("Dina"? sorry for not knowing!) I found your Red Dwarf vlogs quite a while ago and loved them, being a fellow Red Dwarf fan. As the episode "Queeg" is on tv in the UK right now, I decided to revisit your channel. It's really well organised; making playlists is so helpful. I am about to watch your 'Jaws' review... 19:57-12:14 Should this count as another connection to "Halloween"? Sam Loomis: I met this... six-year-old child with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and... the blackest eyes - the Devil's eyes.

I once read a theory that the reason the shark keeps coming back dispite eating enough to satisfy an insane amount of hunger, was that it was sick like with cancer or having be poised by pollution that drove it into a kind of one shark feeding frenzy

I decided to watch this episode again, because lately I've managed to obtain the novel "Jaws" (anniversary edition). I set on reading the novel first and then watch the Film Den analyzing the movie. Let me tell you this: I fucking hated Hooper in the novel. That's because he slept with Brody's wife, and while Ellen Brody at least hesitated at first to cheat on her husband and leter regretted it, Hooper just went along with adultery and showed no remorse whatsover. I mean, I've heard that all three protagonists in the novel are unlikable and people wished them to get eaten, but for some reason Brody and Quint seemed to be at least to some point likable. I mean, sure, Brody is racist and Quint is... well, Quint, but somehow Hooper stroke me as a bigger asshole.
@Cyborcat
@Cyborcat 7 лет назад
Hooper is less likable than Quint--that's hilarious.
@RedHatMeg
@RedHatMeg 7 лет назад
I mean, half of Hooper's lack of appeal comes from the way he treats Brody. In the novel it is established that Hopper is from a higher social class than Brody (but from the same class as Ellen) and during the party scene Benchley depicts Brody as feeling inferior to him. Then we get the adultery subplot and a moment on the boat when Hooper says to the chief: "Well now you care about human lives. And what you did to stop the shark earlier?" And I was just... "Please, die Hooper." My hate for that asshole was so great that when Quint was mocking Hooper, I was happy.
