forever a fan of the first movie. im 25 so i grew up with MK hype and all the older kids i knew really knew the ins and outs of the games while i just played along enjoying the different characters. so glad this series is still around. well deserved and great video.
Speaking of the novelization, Art Lean had a bigger part in that (and originally since it's based on an earlier draft of the script), where his fight against Caesar Cerant in London was fleshed out more and that was his qualification to enter the Mortal Kombat tournament. He also witnesses Johnny Cage's fight against Scorpion. Goro also congratulated him as a great warrior before killing him. I have mixed feelings about that, since on one hand it would be interesting to give him more character and not just being a redshirt, while one the other hand it would be too distracting, since we already have the rest of the iconic characters to focus on
This is definitely the best video game movie, by far. It does something no video game movie has done before or since, take its source material seriously. Most video game movies fall into the "in name only" category, mainly lifting characters' names and small nods to the game, while throwing most of the story in the trash. MK actually attempts to stick pretty damn close to the source material, while not making that source out to be a big joke. Big props to screenwriter Kevin Droney for that. It doesn't hurt that my fave actor, Christopher Lambert, is awesome in it. The fights and soundtrack are also awesome. And it's great that they weren't afraid to actually show the moves from the game, unlike the Street Fighter movie.
Wonderful video, Dena! You know, it always baffled me how "Night Trap" became so reviled as being horribly violent. If memory serves, it was pretty tame. Like a weird sitcom, really. Oh well, the times were crazy back then.
yes, YES! being a diehard fan of the first 3 MK games for over 15 years now, I'm glad that somebody finally said that MK could be great even without the gore. I hope that the Walker brothers see this review:)
What lovely review! I really like your style not angry, not too silly, very factual and personal. You're adorable. Keep doing what your doing, although your back catalog is really great imo. Glad I found you after your time elsewhere on the net. :-)
Man,I wonder about a Talkin Toons special podcast with Rob Paulsen discussing the other side of the Mortal Kombat franchise with Clancy Brown as Raiden when they discuss Defenders of the Realm. He might do to Mortal Kombat like Kevin Conroy did for The Dark Knight: justice to the franchise and some underground nostalgia points to people who still enjoy the MK cartoon out of fun
Great part 1! This is one of my favorite video game movies, along with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. I used to have the novelization to the movie (don't know what happened to it), and yeah, there are some added stuff and different stuff, like the fatality from Goro when he defeats Art Lean. Too bad that never made it into the movie. Probably too much blood.
