The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson Has My Favorite Magic System Ever...The Book Is Great, Too! 

Hey bookworms! Sorry I'm so late today. This review was a bear trying to remember everything I read 3+ years ago. Having the kids home didn't help. Hope I covered all the bases! Drop in and let me know what I misremembered.

When the Lord Ruler didn't even react to being stabbed, I felt so much dread and terror for the characters! Whew

One of my favourite parts was when Kelsier said to himself 'She loves him' and saved Ellend. I cried.

This book made me a life-long Sanderson fan. Loved it. Was like nothing I'd ever read before. I very rarely re-read books, because I have such a huge to-read pile, but part of me would love to go back and re-read this series some day.

I just finished this book and Kells death absolutely shook me. I didn't see it coming at all. Amazing book!

25:30 His name is Hoid. Boy lemme tell you I got the biggest chills when I read Second Era and heard Wax offhandedly thank his cab-driver, Hoid, for the lift. Also yeah, some of your details are incorrect, but they're minor and hey, you were upfront about that at the start and frankly everyone here has read the books, so it's no biggie.

I felt the same way about Kelsier. I absolutely loved the book and read it quicker than most other books, but at the same time when it ended I had weird feelings like where is this going to go from here? I'm starting the 2nd book today, hopefully will have it done by your review of it.

Vin is a great protagonist. Although Vin was amazing in the Final Empire, I took more of a liking to Kelsier. He reminded me of Obi Wan. I'm currently reading through book 3 of this series but I'm planning reread of the entire series sometime this year. I just have a TBR that I want to start tackling.

Very interested to hear your opinion on Well of Ascension, because unlike everyone else it is my favorite of the three!

I just finished listening to this book today- really enjoyed it & will be reading the rest of the trilogy. Loved your review. Kel's death didn't hit me as hard as I thought it should. Found myself cheering when Marsh reappeared as an Inquisitor. I wanted more about the transition to the new gov at the end. *poof* Eland is the new ruler seemed rushed.

the eleventh metal is not atium, in this book it is just called the 11th metal, the 10 are the basic 8, gold, and atium.

Sanderson & Martin are what turned me into a fantasy fan and this book was one of the main reasons. Thanks for bringing back the memories. The Lord Ruler quite an awesome antagonist and God like badass with a awesome reason he is in charge.

Vin's family is important several times. For example, it explains how Vin can see through Smoker's Copper Pulses during her Seeker training.

Have read this trilogy quite a few times love it so much!! One of my favorite books of all time anyone who hasn't read these books is missing out!

I always get a North Korean vibe reading the first half of this book.

Is this spoilers of the entire trilogy or only book one? Title says this is a review of the first book but then Mike says if you haven't read the full trilogy turn back now. I'm a bit confused...

Finished this this morning. Loved the story, loved the characters, loved the unexpected turns, loved the magic, LOVED the fight scenes! Gonna have to go straight to book 2 because Vin “why am I different” and then they didn’t explain it. Hope that is explained soon along with the lord ruler’s comment at the end. SPOILER I was sad but had hopeful theories when Kelsier was killed. I thought maybe the 11th metal would bring him back to life. Or maybe because the lord ruler stabbed him with a spear that had pierced through him (maybe his heart?) that his power would have been transferred to him...but alas...no. So sad!

I just have to say, when you talk about Kelsier destroying the Pits, yeah, I get that feel. I liked him the whole way through, but that part was awesome. I also liked how his plan played out, but man, after that getting through the second book was so hard. I never really found Vin that engaging. I don't hate her by any means, but... Kelsier is kinda what made the book for me. He is juts... dark, hurt, but fun.

Hey Mike! I know you don't typically listen to the audiobooks, so take it for what it's worth, but it's pronounced El Land (Elend). Now that I've gotten that out of my system, still loving your channel, and your honest OPINIONS, even the few I don't agree with. Keeps those discussions fresh IMO.

I enjoyed the first mistborn a lot, but I never had the urge to read on to part 2 and 3, so I stpooed for over a year. By now Im on book 3, but Im still puzzled how this didnt have me instantly craving the next book like sanderson usually does

I think you are really going to like the next trilogy.

Great video as always and you reminded me so much of all the things I enjoyed about this book. So my short review: I love the entire premise of a heist story where the heist is to take down a Dark Lord. Breeze is my favorite character as well. I actually went to high school with a kid named Breeze (yes, his parents were hippies) and he had a jokester personality, so I was reminded a lot of him. Clubs is probably my second favorite. I love the MY FAIR LADY subplot; it’s such a clever way to get Vin to interact with the nobles. She may be an ass-kicking badass sometimes, but going to balls forces her to show her intelligence and play up her femininity. Elend is endearing here; obviously his character grows a lot in the trilogy, but from his first appearance I liked him. The fight with Shan is also great; for some reason, she reminds me of Fairuza Balk. My only criticism is I didn’t like Kelsier as much and thought he got too much page-time. There were maybe a few too many scenes of him just explaining the rules of Allomancy to Vin. After his death, the pace picked up a lot. Maybe I would have structured that part of the story differently. But overall, such a fun book!

Love the Final Empire so much. As I mentioned on the other video, the only blight in it for me was the romance between Elan and Vin. Vin is probably my favorite female protagonist in fantasy history, only Nynaeve comes close. I wish I liked the romance more, but the Warbreaker romance felt so much more natural so I think maybe Sanderson just hadn't quite worked the kinks out of how to do them yet.

Loving the story so far. Finished the well of ascension yesterday. Started hero of ages today. Took some time to start realy liking the characters but I am all inn now.

You have the best intro among all booktubers, and i think your channel deserve more subscribers, love it!

I want to listen to this whole thing, but I’m only 26 percent in...adding it to my watch later. However I am glad I watched some. Some of these names were driving me nuts trying to figure out how to say them...specifically Sazed. I was thinking “Sah zed” Really enjoying the book though!

Great review. Just one point, it’s called The Final Empire, not Hero of Ages (that’s Book 3 😅). While Stormlight is an objectively better series in almost every way, Mistborn will always be my absolute favorite from Sanderson. Also, I hope you review The Secret History novella as well, instead of just the main trilogy. That book gives the rawest, purest form of Cosmere Connection for Scadrial.

Mike I got bad advice from another booktuber that said the second trilogy wasn’t any good so I pushed it away, mate you need to get the second mistborn trilogy it’s fantastic, all 6 books I was unable to put down, and I want to highly recommend Brandon Sanderson The Reckoners trilogy is also amazing, I was very hesitant to pick up a Sanderson book but with 1 book the final empire I was hooked

Physics based magic systems are so amazing. Kingkiller and dresden are great too.

*possible SPOILERS* I'll be one of the few to say that I did not enjoy this series. I am 2/3 of the way through the the 3rd book (whatever the name is) and can't wait to be finished. The magic system is original but not really (they are using performance enhancing drugs). The main characters are all superheroes that can't do anything without burning their metal. Every fight Vin burns this and flares that, pushes this and pulls that...voila an entire army is destroyed...boring. She is the hero that came from nothing and in no time can do everything to include never sleeping, travel vast distance in no time, defeat the most powerful enemies by herself, save the world.

I’m currently deciding and at a standstill on which I should read first... either start mistborn or the way of kings/ storm light archives. This would be the first Sanderson book I am reading.

I just finished this book today I wasn't sure I loved any fantasy books since Harry Potter then I read this book and it's amazing the characters plot thd magic system can't wait to read the sequail I need to know more

lol at you guys trying to stick to schedule :) its done when its done man. Good book, and yea I thought the next one was a bit weak when i read, the cosmere makes things better tho, its all worth a read imo, and this series is ground zero for most of us i guess

Haven't read it yet but still wanted to watch this because a) I like the enthusiasm you have for these books and b) I'm still undecided wether to pick em up someday. What I have read of Sanderson didn't click for me, so.. I'll see. Maybe one day.. 😅

I didn't read it as "Saz-ed" but "Sazed" (like Phased)...interesting.

Just finished the first book. It was so freaking good. I loved every page of it.

I know I'm a bit late, but I believe it was mentioned that is was Sazed who stopped the inquisitors from killing Vin on that first night in Kredik Shaw. (He didn't kill them, just incapacitated them with a feruchemically strengthened attack if I remember correctly.)

A little surprised you didn't mention the ongoing historical story prefacing each chapter. Personally I think that was equal to the magic system in turning me into a massive Sanderson fan (I'd read Elantris prior, but it didn't make quite that big of an impression on me).

I finished book 1 and I was bored from 100 pages in. I actually hated it and it made me nervous about reading anything else by Sanderson as it was my first.

Also read the series almost exactly 3 years ago and you remembered details way better than I did. I liked the series a lot but dont have the love for it many do and it's hard for me to pinpoint why. I feel certain parts were a little too quick and although I dislike info dumps, I think things could have been a little more fleshed out if I'm remembering correctly.

Finished yesterday, enjoyed but love story sucks balls and Mistborns are too OP...

This is more like a complete re-telling the story rather than a review. There's hardly any personal feedback or opinion here. I gotta say I wanted to watch this video to hear some of Your thoughts about certain events and plot twists that You couldn't reveal in the "non spoiler reviews". Plus , like You said, it's not even 100% accurate and is missing a lot, since You read the book quite a long time ago. A bit disappointed, sadly.

Well its not like they "do it for kelsier", Kelsier had planned to die since the start, and left insteuctions to the crew to what to do next, which makes his character imo 10x more badass

I've finished the book today and I already started the Well of Ascension despite the huge shock i've had when Kelsier died.I fall in love with the story,lotr level without a doubt,characters like Kelsier,Vin,Sazed,Elend,Breeze,Ham and Marsh being my favourite ones and the universe,the magic system Sanderson created is so interesting,really impressive !!! PS: Badasss antagonist !!!

I feel like if this was made into a movie I'd like to see Chris Pratt playing Ham, he seems like he'd be a good fit for the role. He does a good job playing characters who are happy and joking a lot but can also do action.

Just finished this today midnight. And damn the "Sandalanche" is a perfect term. Now onto finish Era 1 , Era 2 and the 3 Scadrial Novellas by the year end.

What a book, absolutely loved vins arc so far, I kept hearing its got hints of my fair lady and I thought, nah I’m good, but Sanderson nails it with vin, and kelsier, well what can I say, what a bad ass, all the characters are class, can’t wait to read the rest of the cosmere now

If your sense enhancement makes the taste of food more detailed, if the food is already good tins going to make it better, no?

I think Secret history should definitely be included if you are doing era 1 month, it is the true finale for the story afterall

Hey Mike! Love your content. However, for the spoiler reviews I would prefer to hear more about your actual opinion of the events that occurred and less of a summary on the book. I know you gave your two cents on how you felt upon certain events, but it was mostly summarizing. As a fan, I want to hear more about your reaction to the events and less about the actual events themselves. I know that must me hard since it had been a while since you had read the book. Keep up the great work, look forward to more of your videos.

I got 2 1/3 way through the series. Loved the first book but the second was a chore and the 3rd was just the same coming again so I got bored and could not finish. Should I give these another try? I loved the way BS finished WoT but he could not keep me gripped for this entire series.

Decent review, honestly i read this book because praise it's getting EVERYWHERE like from booktubers, goodreads ... I read this straight after my read of LOTR ( which the hype felt deserved) so most likely gave certain expectation. This book is the definition of worldbuilding, plot and magic system really carrying the narrative. When i think about the plot point itself it sounds really cool like the events that took place however i have problem regards to Sanderson dialogue. His dialogue is often stilted and sounds really unnatural not like how real people would speak. Another criticism is the overexplaining, i like 65% of Wells of Ascension but damn Sanderson over explains the past book and just even events in the book itself. His prose is pretty okay ( bland for the most part) and sometimes downright bad like i remember something, along the lines of "awesome blast" sounds like from a YA novel. Then the second issue I says is the characterisation though, Vin and Keliser had characterisation they weren't different from standard archetypes ( tbh i was fine about them but wasn't blown away ). However crew members had like no characterisation the dialogue between them and Keliser should feel like old friends however it really doesn't. Alot of times they just felt to drive the story for the big plan and to teach Vin how to use her powers. Though i really dig Sazed because he was actually something different, which somewhat refreshing. There the romance which i bother as its quite known by the community. Lastly weird tone, u have all this dark stuff occurring but rarely does any actually swear. In many incidences feels more appropriate than whatever they are spouting. Anyways i didn't hate this book its like just barely a 7, still interested in 2nd book liking OreSeur and Sazed moments. Interested to see the fuss for the final book but honestly one of the more overrated books i've read. idk this is unpopular view but this is my stance. ohhh yeah i also thought the climax was pretty dope, like Kelsier second final fight was awesome to read and final one was cool.
