Its a very good gangster story but the last book makes me recoil a little of say its a good series, the ending itself was ok but the lead to it gave me got 8 season fellings
Christine is a book that really showcases and drives home all Stephen King's hatred of women. His female characters are always crying (counted at least 60 crying events by Wendy in The Shining), and in Salem's Lot the female love interest is stupid and bested by a 10 year old who is obviously King as a kid, the writer in question is King as an adult. In Christine, King is all the characters, Dennis, the jock with a heart of gold, that turns out to be a writer, like King, Arnie the outsider, that is also King, smart but misunderstood. And all the female characters are to be laughed at (Dennis and Arnie respective mothers), lusted after (Leigh, who is hot but dumb, always crying and who can't see some shit without vomiting -seriously?!- or saying the word "shitter" without cramping her cute little nose and crying some more), Leigh also can't drive standard, but she is hot. Dennis sister Ellie, who is a preteen is also cringeyly sexualized, there are numerous references to her "budding breasts", "training bra", her beauty and so on. And the other females, yes, we are in for a treat, whores (the car itself, the slut who "ruined" Dennis friend, a double event, the car (female and whorish, and the bubble gum chewing woman -a cow- who ruined a precious high schooler), a woman is described as the "gorgon"). And the statement that "some pussies have teeth". Always in King's novel the coolest, resourceful, strong, heroic, good, toy makers, friendship oriented, selfless, and go on, are male, the women are dumb, crying all the time, getting in trouble, and if they happen to be "feminist" (I cringe myself thinking what that actually may look like to King) they will be stomped on by a MAN, like in It, where a father of the year wants to f....k his own daughter, there is an actual description of a little girl doing the nasty with a bunch of little boys, and later marries a guy like daddy who beats her "feminist" friend for having "ideas". I know Kings best stuff was written in the 70's, when apparently you could say things like that, but really? I was surprised when they made It into a movie, but they left "that part" out. Yes he can write, but his hatred of women is disturbing. And what with all his characters being writers? can't they be something else? A writer suffering from "writer's block", a writer this, a writer that, it gets old after a while. For me the ones I like best are The Shining, Pet Sematary, Christine, Salem's Lot and It. The rest are all variations of the same, with the same characters, always a writer up front and some crying woman thrown in
Tolkien and Martin are so hard to compare! The world building and lore that Martin does is 2nd only to Tolkien. However the tones of the books couldn’t be more different. LOTR is slow and cozy, GOT is as grimdark as it gets. Both can tie at #1 for me
Disney created season one of Shogun, so it's kind of weird to say "It's not Disney, they're not going to do fanfiction!" Also, some fan fiction can be good, look at all of the Star Wars novels, The Mandalorian, etc.
To my mind, this is one of the most underrated series. Not enough booktubers are talking about this series! Glad you liked it. I'll have to read the Last War now. I absolutely love the First Law and this series.
Mike you might check out The Grim Company. I enjoyed it and i would consider it grim dark but a little lighter then mike shackle. Probably in line with Abercrombie
Since I’m not much of a fan of grim dark and was just lukewarm on The First Law trilogy, I’ll probably not pick this series up, even though it does sound pretty interesting. I also am not a fan of when authors reuse the same word or phrase over and over. Like you said, it’s a nitpick but man, can it get annoying and break immersion. Abercrombie did it in TFL with every character constantly saying “erm”. And in The Faithful and the Fallen series (which I love) characters are constantly “shrugging”, sometimes when it seems odd for them to do so. Yeah, def a nitpick but hard not to notice. lol. Keep up the great content!
Agreed 👌 I kinda was hoping that they'd be able to do something more about angmar and the witch king. Hunt for gollum was already done (technically), which kinda makes it feel like more of a money grab.
(The Second Apocalypse)
For what it's worth Jay Kristoff has never been YA. I have been reading since the Nevernight trilogy (which is cool if you like assassins and revenge stories). People said that was YA, but those books had drug use, explicit sexual scenes, tons of gore, and just general themes that weren't YA. They only called him a YA author because the main protagonist in the Nevernight series was a teenager. Which is ridiculous. It would be like saying Room is a children's book because it is through the POV of a 5 year old, but that's how people categorized him afterwards based on that alone. Check out Kristoff's other work besides Empire of the Vampire. The only one I was ever even mildly disappointed in was Darkdawn and that was because I didn't like the romantic interest, but that was more of a me problem than the author. Oh and Gabriel is an edge lord, but I don't expect someone in his shoes to be much better. It's a fucking dark fantasy series about vampires, I don't expect him to be Mr. Rogers. People expect perfection from main characters but then whine about Mary Sues when they get a perfect character. I read 75 books a year on average and mostly in the fantasy genre, and Kristoff is seriously one of the most promising authors in the genre at the moment.
So glad you enjoyed this series! I do love how it deals with the trauma of the past. Bloody Anne is such a good character! The right tools for the right job.....
Damn you licensing mess 😂 As much as I don't expect the Hunt for Golem movie to be good, let's face it, it's ultimately the licensing mess that is causing all this Tolkien fan fiction to be created in the first place. Perhaps some day, a studio will throw a dump truck full of money to Tolkien's family so that some decent first/second age movies can be made. In the meantime maybe it's time for some Malazan movies. At least there is a lot of source material and computer CGI is good enough to pull it off assuming it is given to someone competent enough to bring it to the screen.
I felt the last book was rushed, and i did not like where he went with Billy the Boy. What stays with me til this day is no matter what, Tomas must take his piss!
You’re pretty much spot on. I’ve been trying to get through this book for about a year. I’ve just got to the point where Kvothe is in the university, and he’s still the same jackass he was from before he was in Tarbean. Dude loses his whole family, has to live homeless and learn to survive on the city streets, and he comes out the other side the same person? Kvothe absolutely refuses to have a character arc 😂 and I just don’t care at this point in the story.
I really enjoyed this quartet when I read it a while ago. Heavily inspired and at time borrows ( a ton) from peaky blinders however, think P. McLean nails the grittiness of gangs and court politics. Excited to see where he goes next.
Exactly right! Why not do Silmarillion from the beginning, and pave right over the Rings of Power drivel. Could cover a decade of film publication and be great, with plenty of exceptional source material.
I just finished this series. I loved the first 2 installments but I feel like McLean fumbled the end. Everything was rushed! This was frustrating because the author extended the trilogy to a quartet because he wanted to give the plot space to breathe. I did get chills during the last passage though. The series is a flawed masterpiece for sure.
Incredible. Ty guys. Love the Drizzt books. They gave me warrior mentality during high school soccer hell-week, doing suicides in the cold rain. Great memories
I think I can get behind a Shogun season 2; there is some natural history to pull upon that gives it a foundation to start from. Will it be the same? Nah. But LOTR? I'm far more skeptical of that being a good idea. (and I totally get your perspective on the amalgamation! Just sayin' the tolerance for me is different). I'm so onboard with running another adaptation of the asian saga!
Dune is one of those books where the setting and plot can host soooo many themes and concepts. It’s obviously a sci-fi, but It is sooo much more than that. It also changed the way I look at things. Of course I didn’t read it until I was 25. If I would have read it when I was a teenager, I doubt I would have had the patience to truly appreciate and comprehend the masterpiece that it is. As soon as I finished the book, I had to immediately find out who the hell frank herbert was, and what he’s been through, because you don’t just write something like that out of the blue.
I can’t believe schools have banned huckleberry Finn. Like if the book has a good overall theme and message, what’s the point in hiding it simply due to culturally different times. I feel like the fear of having it in schools is going to cause misconceptions about the story, and it’s honestly just not fair.. some people fear history way too much.
