Having no other options, I sent the original ECM for this 2010 Nissan Frontier 6 speed manual truck to Flagship One Inc. for "refurbishing".
www.fs1inc.com
A week later got the ECM back and they said that it is FIXED!
PLACE YOUR BETS NOW... will the Frontier start up and run on the original refurbished Engine Computer?

Ivan, I suspect Flagship One is like any other business. The more computers they see the better they get. Diagnostic equipment is also getting better. I also hope auto manufacturers are becoming more sharing with their schematics on these devices. From the comments below it sounds like Flagship One is committed to a positive outcome as an end result. Hearing that truck fire sure sounded sweet! Thanks for Sharing!

Wow good job! I was a mastertech at a nissan for 20 years. I like watching your videos. It reminds me when I was on the field. It takes skills to trouble shoot different brand like you do. In Quebec where I live, corrosion appears sooner then you. I’ve seen a lot of problems with ecm cause by the battery to body ground just next to the battery. There’s a little bracket that can be discard to avoid voltage drop. Also, the immobilizer is located in the BCM. It means that you can simply cycle the key to program then. Can’t wait to see you troubleshoot other nissan!

Great job!! I have same truck 2005. Giving me gremlins and phantom codes. First , o2 sensor, then weirdly the crank sensor. My mech couldn’t figure it out. Thought my ECU was fried. Saw this, ordered new one from Flagship. Got car running , let it idle for 15 minutes or so, then idled jumped to about 2k, 4wd light went on. Shut it down, dials on dashboard ( rpm and speed) started jittering and clicking. Tried to restart, nothing battery felt dead and did read about 8 volts on ammeter of dash . Disconnected battery. Went back to your videos. Can’t figure out. Must be a communication issue. Man I wish you were on Staten Island or can refer me to someone just as good as you here. What about "Maic Salazar Diagnostics" for your ECM repairs? I recently came across his RU-vid channel and seems to be good at repairing ECMs and all sorts of modules. Plus he usually makes a video of the actual repair too. I think dealing with an individual instead of a corporation will get you better customer service for sure! I can't vouch for him, no idea how good or fast his service actually is, but maybe worth a shot if he's got a good rep. If anything, his videos take you deep inside the ECM and various modules and help you get a component level understanding of how they function. Who knows, it may help you start to get to component level module repair, we all know you like to actually fix the problem and not just replace the bad modules.

WONDERING WHAT THE LOUD POP WAS THAT STARTED IT ALL
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
Plenty of electronic components go pop when they explode. Capacitors, transistors, even resistors if you nuke em bad enough. That's not necessarily what "started it all", though. The popping component could've been caused by a short etc. elsewhere which could still exist....

I think I would have checked the sleep current of the repaired module. Then I would make sure the cooling fan(s) are cycling correctly and confirm the fan(s) operation with live data with the scan tool. Usually, I find the EVAP monitor will not pass until the tank is below 3/4 full and above 1/4 full, and it will require two drive cycles (trips) of proper set condition operation.

Way to go! So any info on what went bad in the original ecm? Thanks Ivan
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
Bad 5-volt power supply. Probably a MOSFET decided it didn't want to live anymore. The leakage current would be consistent with this theory.
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
As to WHY the 5V supply grenaded, that is still an open question. Particularly with the phantom whistling, which was possibly an overloaded 5V supply in the donor ECM. There is quite possibly a short in the 5V wiring somewhere on the truck which is blowing the 5V supply in the ECM.
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
But of course we can always blame Flagship One, even if it's not their fault!
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
Hmm... I would never have plugged a good ECM without first doing a resistance and voltage check on the 5V wires to see if there was a dead short or spurious 12V backfeeding from somewhere. I literally puckered up when you did that. And then you didn't kill the power immediately when the noise happened.... As mentioned by some other commenters, that whistling was probably an unhappy switching power supply, possibly because of being under heavy load (think the mysteriously low 1.5V on the 5V rail). It is possible you still have an intermittent short on the 5V line, which could reassert itself and blow up the 5V supply again... As mentioned, it would have been good to ohm out the 5V line while you had the ECM connectors off.

Great ending, Ivan! I'm still wondering about the parasitic draw - did it go away after ECM repaired? Could be the ECM drawing through faulty 5V reference.
@adotintheshark4848
@adotintheshark4848 Год назад
The draw went away with the replacement ECM in the first video anyway
@JoseSilveira-newhandleforYT
@@adotintheshark4848 True, but it could be intermittent from other source - that was my only doubt.
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
See the Part 1 bonus footage. Coil whine mysteriously stopped, and then later so did the parasitic draw. I firmly believe the root cause was not the ECM, but rather something is wrong with the truck 5V wiring/sensors that caused the ECM to blow. Could be a short, could be 12V backfeeding, etc. Tests were not done to determine that... we just assumed the Big Evil Computer was the root cause.
@JoseSilveira-newhandleforYT
@@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies Yep. I thought that too, but the new ECM apparently stopped the whining. Moving the harness to replace ECM could clear whatever drain problem there was, but I'm more convinced that the reference 5V smps inside the ECM could be the problem. We will know if it returns with the same problem 🙂 Merry Christmas.

Is there a tool that you could plug modules in to see if they are good? They should invent one as it would surely cut down on the parts cannon.
@MitzvosGolem1
@MitzvosGolem1 Год назад
They don't want that...They want parts cannon. Snap on scanner tests most ecm and modules on vehicle . It Started with TV repair back in 90s modules fail whole TV junk .My uncle had TV electronic repairs shop for decades closed it down in 90s . Throw away disposable consumer products . No way to diagnose.
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
@Anti-Troll Comedian: It's possible, but if you disconnect a module from the vehicle, you also disconnect all the sensors, actuators, injectors, etc. So if you power the module up, it's like somebody waking up to find that they can't feel or move their body. Naturally, the module will freak out, thinking there are a million things broken or missing. In order to do this properly (which repair shops need to do), you have to hook the module up to a machine which fakes all the sensors, in effect creating an "artificial body". In the case of an ECM test bench, they'll hook it up to a machine that emulates "injectors", "crank trigger", "oil pressure sensor", etc. etc. etc. They make big machines for this which are basically an entire fake engine.

@Stoney3K

My guess is that the buzzing/hissing on the replaced ECM was because its capacitors were also on the way out, and the lack of filtering was causing the SMPS to oscillate.
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
@ Stoney3K: And the capacitors magically refilled themselves with electrolyte for the bonus footage at the end of Part 1?
@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies
@A Dot in The Shark: Sounds like coil whine from a power supply that is working really hard. Given the context, possibly the 5V supply feeding a short circuit in the 5V wiring/sensors on the truck. Was that what fried the 5V output on the original computer? Quite possibly... and no checks were made to see if there was a shorted circuit... before plugging another computer into the system. 😒 The fact that both the coil whine and the parasitic draw went away (Part 1 bonus footage) makes me think something is still rotten in Denmark. But Flagship One will take the blame if/when it fails, right or wrong!
@Stoney3K
@Stoney3K Год назад
@@Friend_of_the_One-Eyed_Ladies The parasitic draw and the hissing stopped after he power cycled the ECM, which leads me to believe it's one of the capacitors in the 5V circuit which would be switched off. This control unit is normally attached to 2 screws at the top and bottom. And not on a screw like in the video. But how do I get to the bottom screw? It's a shame you can't see that in the video

I don't have to go through all the muss and fuss to "program" my keys: the Friendly Hardware Store copies them very effectively. 🙃🙃
