The lay offs are awful, but Michael Salvatori being laid off, no matter how you look at it, was such a monumentally bad move. The music he composed gave a soul to Destiny and they just tossed him out. What a horrible send off to such a legendary composer. I hope he can at least enjoy his retirement.
Salvatori is a big LGBT supporter and Sony is not happy with it. Sony wants to public facing side of Bungie to shut up about LGBT issues. This layoff is a warning to every Bungie employee: Shut Up And Make A Game. Don't like it? Leave. Sony is pissed off about the whole Latin-X thing. Sony is not a North American company and the guy running Sony is not from the West. This lay off is a wake up call to the militant employees.
Guy is 69 years old. Maybe they sent him on an early retirement. Bungie does not owe us an explanation why they lay off people or why certain people are laid off.
@@mdemarteau7693 They don't owe an explanation to us but they certainly owe that explanation to the people who got laid off, some of which have confirmed was not given to them. It's a shitty situation for those involved in this and the radio silence between Bungie and these people and the general Bungie community about situations like these is making people lost their trust and faith in the company, which is the one thing that is essential to retain for video game developers.
@@absentzz347 I agree with you that they own an explanation to their employees you are right. Maybe they did maybe they did not. I don’t take all tweets for truth. And no I am not defending Bungie, just lay offs happen all the time. Yes it sucks for the people but I am sure they will bounce back.
@@leviticusprime4904 Bungie has always been the problem. They just consistently blame their problems on their parent companies and the fanbases eat that stuff up. This time, the timing was way too close from them just having just been brought out by Sony, who knows they need the manpower to even have a hope of competing with Microsoft and wouldn't dare pull it off something this close after hiring them. The sad thing is, this isn't the first time Bungie has done this, and judging from how everyone just assumed that it was Sony, just like how everyone assumed that Activision was the problem when it was really mostly Bungie, it will come to pass and everyone will buy TFS regardless.
Same thing just happened with my wife. At her job for 12 years, great pay, great benefits, and one of peoples favorite people there. New owners come in, promised everyones job was safe, and then fired almost all the original employees. Souless corporate pieces of garbage. Haven't played D2 in a couple years, but I'm sad to see this happening to it.
Remember when this sort of behaviour was blamed on Activision? And now it's being blamed on Sony, yet the only common denominator in destiny drama is bungie themselves.
It's been the biggest line of cope for this community for years. "It's going to get better now that Activision's gone" fast forward a year we've got more microtransactions than ever before.
@@mildlydazed9608 I've been saying this for Years. Microtransactions got far worse after the Activision split. Now they split Dungeon Keys from Season passes, with the explanation to "not wanting people to buy Content they don't play." Problem is, the Season Pass still costs 10 Bucks and now people have to pay 10 Bucks per Dungeon *on top* Oh and they also upped the Season Pass price to 12 Bucks, which forces you to pay at least 15 Bucks, because they didn't introduce a dedicated Silver Coin Bundle for people who just want the Pass.
Its so sad to see all of this come to pass. Michael salvatori is such a big piece of destiny and bungies history and the final shape being delayed was really just the cherry on top. I hope to god something gets said because the community is going to have a lot of questions
The music CANNOT and WILL NOT be forgotten, you WILL be able to tell a difference because of how skilled this composer was. Whatever they were paying him, it wasn’t enough even if it was “too much”. Absolutely wild
For real tho just him writing shell of what was and eye of the storm is worth way more then what they was paying him it’s a shame he’s such a inspiration to me I’m disappointed
O’Donnell and Salvatori’s work meant a lot to me and I always looked forward to hearing the new music with each expansion. They are huge inspirations of mine and it was sad to see Marty go but losing Salvatori feels almost unforgivable. Along with the other red flags concerning the state of the game, I have more reasons now than ever to finally say goodbye to Destiny after almost a decade. What a damn shame. dmg was smart to get off the train when he did.
Me too, I fear that they're gonna lose so many people and resources it's physically impossible to make the final shape so they're gonna serve us the bare minimum in order to not have to dish them pre orders back out and only give us exactly what was in the trailer as to not be sued for false advertising
Yup I was trying to warn my clanmates and friends this might be it for Destiny. And since the god weapon crafting glitch the servers are still up and down and yea why did they lay off so many people when they need to fix allot things within their game and a dlc and Marathon on their plate? I swear they are going to come out and say something like "we are rebuilding out team, to rebuild our game." Some bs like that.
Im sad to see the man that shaped the destiny world through our ears but do not lash out at the devs instaid turn your attention to sony and the exects that make these choices
I don’t think Sony had a choice. Sony seems to be in a really bad spot right now, hence why they did this to most if not all of their studios. The choices they’ve made with pushing live service games, as well as Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, which made a huge amount of money for Sony, which is why they pushed so hard to stop the deal. It sucks all around but it’s business at the end of the day sadly.
Salvatori made the game come alive. Some of the most iconic moments in Destiny are influenced by his work. It's crazy to think the next Destiny expansion won't have his fingertips on it.
At 50, I've been laid off numerous times. It's always hard and sad. It's far from just Bungie. The gaming industry is hemorrhaging employees lately. Wouldn't be surprised to see Ubisoft completely dissolve. My heart goes out to those who lost their jobs but, trust me, you'll land on your feet. Talented people always rise to the top.
Yeah, it's been apparent for a while but it really feels like triple A gaming is dying. Long gone are the days where triple A studios were the most stable, consistent, and most innovative with games. Almost all of the games I play now are from indie devs, as that's where the most passion can shine, without the suppression of upper management stifling the developers drive for profit.
I didn’t pre order The Final Shape because of reasons like this and Lightfall. Glad I stuck to my choice. My heart goes out to all those who were laid off. Hoping they have a somewhat easy transition.
Same and your right because of the poor performance and sunsetting poor content didn't buy it sad to know about the laid off speedy recovery to those who lost there jobs.
You're not smart for not pre-ordering yknow. The price is gonna be the same, a very good chunk of the game is gonna be negated to you if you don't eventually buy the Dlc and the only disadvantahe you have is not getting the new exotic sooner, and less cosmetics. So yeah, you're not smarter. If you're not gonna buy final shape, you might as well stop playing destiny
@yasininn76 why do you think so many of us didn't Pre-order The Final Shape, it's because we don't care about the game anymore just as Bungie doesn't care... I have played since the D1 beta almost religiously, but being let down time and time again with crap content, Lightfall was just the last straw for me, put it down as soon as the first season startet and will likely never pick it back up. Their whole seasonal model was a good idea to begin with but they put close to zero effort into it and it shows, now they're gonna put even less, so you can keep enjoying the game if you want to, but me and a whole lot of others will no longer participate in this shitshow. The two things that kept me coming back were the stories and the music, now we'll have neither...
the salvatori news was the worst gut punch out of all these layoffs. firing him is absolutely disgusting behavior, it's like firing john williams from star wars. he made some of my favorite game music of all time, he didn't deserve to go out like that.
Losing Michael Salvatori right before the finish line might actually just do it for me. Not having his music elevate the finale of this saga is just unthinkable, and I just can't even bother being interested in Final Shape now. Been discussing with friends whether we're done with Destiny after Final Shape, some will be regardless of how it lands, but now honestly I might be in that boat as well.
There is no way most if not all of the music of TFS isn't done already. Even the Showcase on august was made many months prior. It'll be Michael's music for sure.
@@Goudafortuna I really can’t grasp my head around the decisions being made, firing composers who captured the essence of destiny’s core motifs and music is crazy. It’s sad that final shape may just be the final time we actually get decent music.
@@cwj2733 I think you're right. Disappointing as I had planned to see it through to the end of final shape as I've played since D1 but my heart isn't in it anymore especially after all this..
I remember seeing a short quote about this kind of thing, don't remember it exactly but it seems to be applying more and more to bunjie: basically, it was the talent and dedication of the developers that built up the company from scratch, as they got bigger and became a business they hired more and more staff, cleaners, managers, marketers... and for a while everything is good, the developers make greater and greater products and more and more money is made. However after a while it becomes expensive and costly to continue to fund these great events that have built up such a great community reputation, and so the people in charge become the people that make the most money... the marketers. Their only goal is to make money and the way they see it, the way to do that is to make as much content as possible... and so the developers that built up the reputation with the community are slowly phased out for cheaper, faster labour. And what the company once was is lost... consumed by itself. From memory this was about Blizzard, but i think it can also be applied here. idk
Losing Marty was already such a big blow to the gut then losing Salvatori is just the nail in the coffin. Edit: we lost Michael Sechrist too :( (the guy who also contribute to make Deep Stone Lullaby and other bangers)
Yeah it’s safe to say that there wont be any monumental music from Bungie anymore. Just look at the Doom Eternal dlcs music after they fired Mick Gordon or at the first 4 Ratchet and Clank games and their major music shift (it’s horrible)
@@LastKingLKArthur yea it was already started going down hill after Marty's left, like the soul and magical soundtracks from D1 was gone, but at the very least we still fortunate to have something like Deep Stone Lullaby and other Beyond Light bangers thanks to Salvatori. That really was the final straw we've got left after this.
The man is almost 70, and they are finished with the franchise. It's over - even if another game/movie appeared and wanted him to work on it, would he even want to?
Marty O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori, absolute geniuses. If salvatori finished writing any music for final shape I almost hope it isn’t included in the release, out of respect for him. As much as I adore his music and want to hear it, and know just how instrumental he’s been in shaping the destiny universe and experience, I think it would be just such a disrespect to lay him off and then use his work to make money, he doesn’t deserve that
It’s probably quite simple really… I suspect Salvatori has been laid off because he’s finished the score for the final shape and they no longer need him…. Brutal, and possibly points towards the end of Destiny. But probably true.
Michael Salvatori was one of my favorite composers of all time, his works especially for D2 has never failed to leave me stunned after each piece. Michael was one of if not my greatest influences both as a gamer and as a musician. Over the years D2 has been in a steady decline in every aspect except for the music, at least for me, and to see him go is extremely unfortunate. Without Michaels works I don’t think Destiny will ever be the same for me and unfortunately I think I’ll be refunding the final shape. I’ve loved destiny since Crotas end, but I think this is the end, at least for me.
I only work part time so coughing up the 100 dollars for final shape and what comes after wasn’t easy. Not saying that was a good financial decision but I had faith that bungie would deliver because I love destiny and now that faith is waning. Truly is a sad day😢
Yeah lmao People act like triple A companies haven't been corporate shells for years. Look at all the Diablo 4 shit, people always say "Blizzard is a shell of what was 20 years ago" no shit? It took you this long?? (Not you specifically davidlanceescandor1310) Imo if people are putting trust in these companies still after all the mistakes companies make are completely blind. You are a consumer, you are a dollar sign to these people. If you want Devs to care for you, go play small time indie games where they make games for passion.
its crazy how years later so many people miss activision being in charge when initially people thought that the decline of d2 was because of activision, its a topic that def needs more exploring
This is the second the big delay for the final shape. Lightfall was a pacifier cause they needed more time with tfs. Now they need another 4 months. Too much hype and delay means this will never live up to the expectations.
After seeing all of this bubble over, and especially after seeing dmg's tweet, I wonder about the possibility of a mass exodus from bungie that could leave the development of destiny and other future projects in shambles, if they can just go fire Hippy and of all people Micheal Salvatori himself on a random monday, why would you ever want to work there, the looming threat of termination sounds horrible and I don't see a bright future for destiny. I hope im wrong about all lf this and whatever the hell happened gets resolved but something tells me that this is the beginning of something worse
Btw, some people are reporting that Salvatori just retired and wasn’t actually fired/laid off, but it’s all alleged still. Edit: nope, he confirmed he was given the boot (idfk why). Man…
That's possible, but if that was the case I'd think he or Bungie would have made an official announcement by now. Especially given his history with them
well I mean hey all I gotta say is that since both Michael and Martin are out free, maybe we could see some kind of collaboration between them in the future? idk who knows but I think it'd be cool to see them do something together again, even if it's a small project
Bungie has changed so much, I remember when I was I kid it was one of the only companies who would put out bts on the internet/Bnet or include it in their games somehow. We got to see the type of amazing people who were making the games we played, the games they wanted to make. Those people did not shy away from showing their distain for corporate overlords and made what was best for the players.
I work at a software company that somewhat recently got bought by a large corporation when the guy who started the business wanted to retire and since then you can see the same thing happening. This is just what happens when corporations gobble up talented software companies. They cannibalize the talented employees to find the quickest way to turn a profit and that's ultimately what they care about and eventually it just totally ruins the product forever. Sometimes the reason behind the firing of long term dedicated employees comes down to someone seeing an opportunity for them to get more money in their pocket.
Had a good time with Destiny 1 and 2 and betas but I think this is it for me for dealing with Bungie and buying their games to support them and enjoy their games. I already know Bungie has not treated their employees very well throught D1 and D2, and now they are laying of employees who have been here for since the beginning? Nah think im getting out before it gets worse. And Bungie does not care about us with the amount of microtransactions they add into the game is ridiculous. I had fun this last season with the Eres morn stuff, spire, Crota rework, and the god weapon crafting glitch. But then with the servers in a fritz since then and now layoffs and dlc and Marathon delay I think thats it for me.
Sony "acquired" Bungie. They didn't merge with Bungie. They don't have Bungie or their customer's best interests in mind. This was a business decision. Bungie will be stripped down and retained, if profitable, or sold for a profit because of increased revenues (and decreased overhead). Give it a year to 18 months.
This whole year has been an unmitigated disaster. Every month there's always some new debacle, whether it's something breaking in the game (like crafted weapons ruining trials) or a PR nightmare (pissing off the entire Latino community by using the term Latinx). It really feels like Bungie is a sinking ship and the water is almost up to the helm.
I have a feeling that bungie has their hand forced. I’m 99% sure that they were well aware the weight that Michael had, and how much he glued everything together. Regardless, there is no coming back from this. They lost the engine to their car, and it will be tremendously difficult to win people back. So long, Destiny.
I don't know, I used to say that about bungie when they were tied to Activision. Fast forward a few years and when they went solo things slowly got worse and worse.
It's disgusting, sickening and unfortunate when a truly caring company starts going down hill. I worked for a company for 6 years and saw first hand this sort of scenario happened. After the CEO/Founder passed, it started gradually changing. It became dangerous and backstabbing. We'll just have to wait and see what the future brings. It's sad.
I literally said "Final Shape will be unplayable" when my friend said that they'd fired Salvatori, and I was only half joking. There are certain people that you should hand a blank check when it comes to the final expansion of any piece of media, the #1 composer is one of them.
I don’t understand in what way does laying off a composer that fundamentally impacted the games iconic soundtrack has to do with cutting down. Micheal is known for bungies sound smh.
Also I feel so bad for the devs. They obviously work hard and put a lot of love into what they do. However the recession is coming despite what anybody tells you otherwise and this time tech will suffer quite a bit. I hope everything works out in the end but lord is it scary.
Relating to the delays and the people who think it’s good for the game, delaying a game because it needs time to cook is fine, BUT(and this is the biggest BUT that I’ve ever BUTED), delaying a game because of employee layoffs is how you ACTUALLY kill a game.
Someone mentioned in another video that release dates are set in stone, and no amount of layoffs could or would effect it, so if TFS is actually getting delayed, it's because of something worse happening behind the scenes.
Lmao you must have been picked up the game 6 months ago 🤡 ain't shit gonna effing change, crush those hopes and dreams fast and hard, this company has been digging its own damn grave for YEARS now, if they haven't learned now then they certainly never will 💀 lmao
it took Activision getting bought out by Microsoft for their upper management to change. upper management will never change until there's someone above them that's how it is.
Seeing some of the bungie employee getting layoff didn’t make me feel anything big is coming. But after seeing bungie delay TFS to June and M.S got layoff, i truly believe Destiny 2 has come to its end Good time to stop playing it I guess, good times.
So glad i havent preordered. Decided to wait to see if it was worth it after lightfall and boy am i finally taking a W with choices involving games lol.
At this point the delayed release is not even the bad news, my concern goes to all the devs who got laid off even the veterans. May they find a stable source of financial support. It's becoming more and more true that Bungie is the real Destiny 2 killer
A tragedy to be remembered for sure I hope that all the people laid off will find a way through this point in time. My heart and mind is with all those who've lost their jobs recently not just in Bungie and in Sony I hope that you all find a way to get back on your feet. I understand the frustrations and the people who are grieving painfully about having lost their positions in the companies for which they work. I really do hope sincerely that everybody towards the end of the year will find a way to gain back in return after having worked so hard at their jobs. And I sincerely am wishing, hoping that after the new years eve I hope everything gets better at least I hope so I'm holding onto hope still regardless how negative and hopeless things may look and seem to be. Corporate greed and shite management and company corruption and the industrialization colleague, employee abusive practices is such a global cultural shift. Honestly it's way too common in the culture of corpo growth. I feel badly that high executive suits are the ways that benefit at the most whilst the people under the highest throne chairs suffer from losing so much knowing we all have families to feed but corporations sees reason to abuse and manipulate the situation and it's just so fucking unfortunate to see so many companies heading towards using more abusive practices in companies either small, or large in size. Understandably its just about business and financial gain but at the end of the day I can see why everyone is so pissed at Bungie I'm with you all on this one.
As optimistic as I try to be I just cannot see how this can't be seen as the worst moment in Destiny history. This is the most worried I've been for the franchise, EVER.
After what bungie did to marty.... fuck em. Also sony seeing "NO PLAN" for a destiny sequel talk about the biggest red flags for a company purchase ever. Marathon has so much competition that just hoping it'll carry the company was clearly a fucking mistake to begin with.
I was losing hope in Destiny for a while now, and now it’s even more concrete. I was gonna play the final shape in February, now I don’t even know now.
@krumpy7394 Not "Always," no, but definitely for years. I got excited when Bungie split from Activision, and I really liked Shadowfall (moon's haunted) but Beyond Light was irredeemable, and you really fucking needed your head in the sand to not see that.
This shit is abhorant, and i dont think theres a reason that bungie can give that can make it good, and micheal salvatori being laid off? If they think they can replace him not a single employee is safe, and best advice is to move on and find a new company to work with because this whole situation is just fucked up
@@ThtSunbreaker I’m asking you do you think it’s a Bungie decision or a Sony decision? Sony companies have all been forced to take massive lay offs this year, so it seems to be a Sony management decision to me.
@@kaiden9854sony litrrally had no involvement since they only own bungie, bungie as a company is totally independent, if lay offs happened it was bungies decision. This isnt a matter of opinion its fact thats how it works thats proven.
@@ThtSunbreaker right and you’re confident in that? Like you know that for a fact? You are an expert in this field? All signs from where im standing say otherwise, but hey im willing to say im wrong if proven so. My point is to feel so fervently about something you don’t actually know is foolish.
I’m paid up for the Final Straw so I will play it. If there is a delay but it means it will be more polished and closer to the original storyline I’ll still Play it.
Salvatori, Sechrist, whole ass community management team, and other people being fired is probably one of the most retarded decisions ever made. Well the only good thing for me at least, is that I’ll save some money and a lot of time, cos I’m not buying that shit 100%. And yeah, I know that TFS is probably almost finished atm and those layoffs aren’t doing much to it, but I’m not willing to waste my money and time on a dead shit.
Laying off Michael salvatori is the biggest mistake they've made. Him and the destiny soundtrack was the only thing that was always good in destiny's life cycle. Soundtracks was always the thing that they always got right and could always do, despite it being in a bad season/dlc and now nothing will be good anymore. Soundtracks will probably fall off, pvp is a joke, seasons are a snooze, and endgame isn't it anymore
It's truly horrendous for those who have poured so much of themselves into this story to then be shown the door before its conclusion. As good or bad as this IP might be, right as we're about to go into the heart, they rip out its guts.
Most likely the layoffs were to make themselves look good to shareholders 🤮 I think it’s also ties to Sony as well with what they are going through internally. It’s gunna be interesting to see how this unfolds.
When the delay rumor started this morning I thought to myself "I cant wait for the final shape so I can finally be done with this series." but now with these layoffs I just think ive had enough.
You know what needs to happen? If the people working at Bungie truly want the best for the company, for us and them, then they need to unionize. Bungie is a company, and they need to be communicated with as such.
If the delay makes the game better that’s good and nothing is fully done official about the game also how do you can the guy carrying the franchises atmosphere
Disclaimer: The following text is basically a rant and contains various opinions I have of the game and the studio. ________________________ Like I said a long time ago when I quit, the company has been infested with corporate stooges who know nothing about the game and only care about filling their pockets with ever increasing prices for expansions. To be clear, I didn’t quit for that reason alone. I quit for numerous reasons. The main ones were that it wasn’t fun anymore and everything was pissing me off in it. Nothing in it made me happy anymore. The expansions and seasons became so much more lazy and unsatisfying due to less being offered. I then realized that I would likely never be happy if I continued playing that dumpster fire of a game. Plus, the company (and therefore everything involving the company) has become a fucking echo chamber for politics. I hate politics of any kind. I don’t really care if there are political things added to a game or whatever every now and again, but when it happens so fucking often, it becomes extremely annoying to me. I saw the “writing on the wall” and knew that the game that I used to enjoy was going to die and I should just quit the game while I’m ahead. Truthfully, I HATE Bungie and D2. I’ve hated both for a long time. I hope everything they release will forever flop because of how little effort they put into a lot of things, and how much the studio has changed into a corporate cesspool infested with the greediest corporate executives on par with the greedy Activision, EA, and, Nintendo board of directors. ______________________ My advice to those that read this who still play the game is; Evaluate your level of enjoyment with the game and whether or not you like the company. If you find that you no longer enjoy it as much as you used to (or even at all anymore), I suggest you quit. You will be much happier. If you find that you do still enjoy it, oh well. But just be aware that the company *will* eventually and irreparably disappoint you, and then you’ll think “Huh. I don’t enjoy this game or like this studio anymore. I should quit.” ______________________ Thank you for coming to my TED talk. P.S. Hate me or disagree with me if you want. I don’t care. As Lewis Spears always says; *”Death threats don’t scare me!”*
I've noticed alot of people immediately rushing to pin all the blame on Sony but remember, we did this exact song and dance about Activision and look how that turned out. Best to wait for more information.
Destinys been a massive part of my life for the last 7 or so years. I was so excited to finish strong with final shape, and now i don’t know if I’m even going to buy it. This is Insane.
I've been here for the entire time since the closed beta of d1 and I see the writing on the wall. The most influential game of my life my favorite game of all time is being murdered. The Final Shape isn't going to be an explosive end of the series it's a low death rattle of its final gasps.
