The writers really fucked up when they killed Catherine's character. Yeah, she wanted off the show but they didn't have to kill her. Who ever heard of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, a classic tale ...killing the BEAUTY? Stupid Stupid Stupid. Sorry, I had to get this off my chest. I have the DVD series and just watched it again.
To make amends for such an outlandish mistake of killing Catherine, in the final scene Vincent should have eaten the baby. Lions often eat their young.
I agree. What they SHOULD have done is a big slam-bang finale - feature length, or possibly 2-parter - in which the characters from the World Above and those from the World Below had to meet up and work together to catch Paracelsus, who has some evil scheme which threatens both worlds. It should conclude with closure on Vincent's identity, and with Catherine and Vincent getting married. Due to the two "Worlds" having to work together, Catherine's friends and family would now know about Vincent. Her father would be freaked out at first, but should give his blessing in time for the ceremony. Catherine could live in the World Below, but still work in the World Above. And maybe the final scene could be a few years after the wedding, when they are expecting their first child, whom they will raise in the World Below where he or she will be loved and accepted, just as Vincent was. Just sayin'. :D
PS - When Catherine and Vincent get married in my scenario, it does NOT destroy their empathic bond - why should it? Instead, it makes it even richer and deeper than before. :)

Linda Hamilton was asked to reprise her role in T2 ( my fave T movie. ..just incredible) She had also become pregnant - writers incorporated this into story line LH felt she had outgrown the series and she did want off. Now, There was speculation as to whether or not a third season would be possible! fans waited Months to see If the series would return. Many had written in save the show (Before the Internet and social media) The thing was Imagine Vincent Without his beloved Catherine. This was the new central theme for the 3rd season 1989-90 Ultimately, the series failed Without Catherine and the central relationship story arc.
I hated to see Catherine die. I think there could have been another way. I never liked it that they lost their bond & he could not find her until it was too late. I liked Diana as a friend. It would not have been realistic to have him fall in love again that soon after losing the love of his life. Vincent cared for Diana as a friend and was grateful to her. To have her live a life with Vincent below when he and Catherine couldn't would have been far fetched. It would have been better for the fans for him to find her and their child and have a life below, that would have been the best ending. The reason Linda Hamilton left was due to her own pregnancy, she wanted reduced time and the producers would not agree. When the writers strike happened, she had an opt out clause and used it. I think if the producers had worked with her on a reduced work schedule, fans would have been happier with that than her death. They could have stretched out her scenes per episode. One critic even said that if they had worked with her, she would have come back. I would love to see them reprise the show and find that Catherine was not the one that died and her and Vincent be together again.
Agreed. As soon as Catherine died, that was the end for me. I didn't bother seeing the rest of the series. I tried but it looked like it was forced. No substance, no chemistry.

I remember reading that somewhere. I watched this as a kid, but only the first season. I finally got around to watching the entire series on Amazon Prime recently and was horrified, to put it mildly, at how the series progressed and eventually ended, that I did some reasearch as to why Catherine was killed off. I'm like 'Really, you assholes? You couldn't have at least worked with Linda Hamilton so she could reduce her workload and the series can still go on with Vincent and Catherine TOGETHER, as it should have?'.
There was some violence, but it has to be said that it was not particularly graphic. Anything serious, like the assault on Catherine in the first episode, took place off camera. And yes - a great love story! :) We totally need more heroes like Vincent! :D
Concerning the question of killing Catherine, I think the actress who portrayed her stipulated that she wanted the character to die so she wouldn't have to play her again in a future reunion show, etc. Denise Crosby did the same thing with her character of Tasha Yar on Star Trek:The Next Generation when she left during the first season. However, her career tanked after that, and she ended up asking the producers of the shoe to find a way to resurrect Tasha.
When this series was playing I think I was in Love with Vincent ( I was a teenager) and envious of Catherine. Such a beautiful love story brought to life. I also thought the Beast's character was handsome, more so than Pearlman. I hated when it ended....
This was such a good show. It was a stupid idea to kill of the character that was the Beauty of the Beast. I think it's every woman's dream to experience a love that is so unconditional and yet still be able to maintain your individuality and not be subsumed into your partner.
Unpopular opinion, but I loved Diana for who she was, and the way she helped Vincent and baby Jacob. I didn't see her as a new love interest for Vincent, because he would never love anyone the way he loved Catherine. I saw her as a possibility, someone to help Vincent heal and give him some peace. I think she did that beautifully. ❤

I adored this show! The music, poetry, the selfless love. But the ending of the series left me so angry. The way they killed off Catherine was so hokie and weird and unbelievable. And THEN introducing another love interest! - was insulting to say the least. Linda was leaving and there was no stopping her, but the characters and viewers deserved a much better ending to this very special show and love story.
Beauty and the Beast was my favorite show. My seven-year-old daughter and I would unplug the phone and be mesmerized by the show. During the second season, my son was born, my daughter was brought to my hospital room with a gift for the new baby. The card was addressed to VINCENT. She was determined his name was going to be VINCENT. We compromised. His first name was for his daddy-Richard, first middle name was Scott(after a favorite cousin who died young) and second middle name was VINCENT. Today, at age twenty-nine, he uses VINCENT as his pen name for the short stories and books that he's writing. Still wish they would have let Catherine live and reunited them. :(
I have to disagree. Him and Catherine were the true soul mates. Vincent and Diana had more of a close kinship and friendship. I never saw their connection the way I did with Vincent and Catherine.
there was a script i read years ago about bringing this to the big screen and they actually started the movie when Catherine was in the hospital, but instead of dying, she came out of it....if only they would start right there and make the movie...just ONE movie is all i ask
A couple problems with that scenario; in 'Though Lovers Be Lost' she was held captive, not hospitalized and succumbed to overdose injection of morphine.
Yeah I wish that was how they ended the series. Instead of making the 2 "Though Lovers Be Lost" episodes to have Catherine tragically killed off IMHO it would've been much better if they just did 1 TV or big screen movie to wrap up the series & give her & Vincent a happy ending.
Vincent and catherine were soulmates, therefore Vincent will never stop loving her. When he said that he didn't count jacob as his only blessing, he only meant how much diana helped him. The entire story was built around Catherine and Vincent, to get him to move from catherine so quickly would be...stupid. They should have killed catherine...there are alternate ways people can leave shows!! Like...she was in a coma...and then vincent hears she wakes up at the end of the last episode...
That's exactly what Ron said - the blessing he meant was Diana's friendship. And Ron's point of view was that Diana wasn't in love with Vincent - she was in love with Vincent and Catherine's love story. That's the difference.

@@Jimevideo According to Ron Perlman, she's just a friend/Helper. Ron said that the way he played it was that Vincent looked at Diana as a friend, that he was grateful for her friendship but his true love, his soulmate, would always be Catherine. He even said that Vincent wouldn't move on from that and he didn't want to do another romance so soon after Catherine's death/Linda's departure. "It's a friendship -- that's all" is how Ron phrased it.
One of the biggest injustices in TV Land.. I would rather they ended the show with him and Catherine than what they did.. I would have preferred two seasons of perfect...
I will always hate the way they ended it. Just rewatched the series and could barely watch the third season. Just because she wanted off doesn't mean you had to kill her off. Should have had her to below and live with vincent
@Camille McALoon I read somewhere Linda Hamilton didn't want off originally. She allegedly wanted to reduce her workload due to pregnancy, and the writer's weren't trying to hear that, which sucks, because if that's true, they could have worked with her to make it so her character was just living Below to ensure she had less screen time, and still kept the romance between Vincent and Catherine going.

Wow, so you got to hear Vincent speak both of your names! My Mother's name was Laura, though the episodes with that character are not my favorite. Perhaps I am a bit envious to hear my Mother's name spoken so fondly by Vincent, knowing my mom did not care for the series and couldn't understand me for being so enthralled by it.
I loved the show when it first came out. After the ending of A Happy Life I think it was highly improbable that Vincent would fall in love with another woman. I mean the ending with the "shadows" kissing and embracing. I took that to mean their souls merging together. Very powerful. How would you "undo" such a love?!! They should have ended the series with a happy ending with Catherine. This whole Diana thing was like trying to push a square peg through a round hole. It just didn't follow or fit anywhere in the narrative. And "yes" killing Catherine was a very stupid move on their part.
This show had a great premise and it was magic for first couple seasons until it devolved into fantastical nonsense, the beauty should never have been killed off, it was rendered bleak when it was romantic and feel good.

I heard that Ron and Linda where extremely mad about the last season. They where promised a happy ending for Vincent and Katherine, and when Linda's character got killed off. Ron went off on the writers and producer's. The reason he kept on after is the fact that He loved the idea of his character being a father. Ron said he hated the fact that they made it seemed that his character fell in love with another woman.

The true connection was him and catherine..Trying to replace her would be a mistake..... They would have cheapened the bond between him and Catherine if they had him fall for Diana... I'm glad they didn't do that...
Ron Perlman said at a convention that the way the show ended was that Vincent saw Diana as a friend who helped to rescue his son (that was the "blessing" he meant). She had a special place in his heart and he cared about her, but she wasn't a romantic love. When Diana looks at Vincent, he keeps his gaze on Jacob, who Ron said was his lasting true love as Catherine "always" stayed in his heart. They gave him the option regarding Diana, and he went with friendship. To the great applause of the crowd in the audience.

sorry but the way this show ended has been upsetting me for years.it should have been catherine holdin their child not her.never did like the diana character she felt to me like she wanted to replace catherine in vincents life.even in this scene when she knew he was thinking of catherine she looked jealous.they need to go back and redo season 3

I'm not a fan of the show, but my grandmother was. I remember watching this show with her when I was a very little boy. I'm just thinking about her tonight and reminiscing, I guess.
It was a beautiful ending, but knowing that it was not Catherine made it frustrating to watch. I mean since they made an ending such as this then why could they not end it with VIncent and Catherine? With the falling ratings and high production cost they should have ended it by giving us fans a happy ending. They were waiting for the axe to fall; so why put us through the nightmare that was S3? Ah, well at least Baby Jacob is part Catherine. I think I could live with that ... or maybe not.
Watching this on amazon prime video and... I noticed from the very beginning George R.R Martins name prominently displayed through the credits at the beginning of each episode and I began to fear.... and my god episode 3 of season 3 and I cant watch anymore ;___; I dont know the particulars, I do know the actress wanted off the show but I feel they could have done it much better. I can think of 4 maybe 5 ways off the top of my head >__

Am I the only one who thinks Diana Bennett was a way more interesting female character than Catherine Chandler? Too bad the show ended. So much potential for interesting storytelling, if only the network hadn't interfered with what kind of stories the writers were allowed to come up with. It could have been a rich character/love story/action/drama/crime show, yet most of the times it was banal and shallow kids TV.

Creo que todos los que amamos ésta sería hubiéramos quedado felices con dos temporadas y un final feliz con Katerin y Vincent juntos, que una tercera temporada sin Katerin, ese no es el final que se merece una historia de amor tan bella como está. Ojalá cambiarán ese final, Vincent y Katerin tenían que quedar juntos y felices con su hijo, ese debe ser el verdadero final.

What memories this brings back. I wonder what ever happened to the actress that played Dianna. I can't recall seeing her on any other show, not even as a guest star. Also, that baby is around 24 years old now.
She had a recurring role in seasons 4 & 5 of the 90's drama series Sisters as a new 5th sister Charley (the show's focus was on the relationship between 4 adult sisters).

Thanks for posting. I too wish they had ended the series with more closure for the fans who love this tv show. I think Vincent and Diana had chemistry and the show could have continued centered around them. I think the Gabriel storyline hurt the show and made the ratings go down. But, can't undo the past, so it's nice to be able to watch it again and again here.
