Hi I am also from Toronto via Halifax and have landed in Whangarei NZ. Natalie's videos are awesome. I always add orphan blocks and extra scraps to my backs now. All wonderful tips. I call it the #afterquilt after seeing Karen Brown on @justgetitdonequilts. Missouri 🌟 you are the best at inspiring quilters worldwide! 😊
When I first started quilting, I felt like I had to have one large piece of fabric on the back. Over the years, I've changed my methods, and now I always use pieced backing. I try to use up extra yardage from the quilt top, extra blocks if I have them, whatever. I love the look. Natalie and I think alike - the back looks great when it's funky!
The "Crafty Gemini" has a great video on squaring up quilts. Her video is how I learned to square up mine. If I knew how to link it I would, but I'm not that tech savy.
I’m a big fan of Natalie! I’ve often wondered why “double sided” quilts aren’t very mainstream. Especially if you’re quilting with an all over pattern.
Happy to see Natalie discussing the process of backing a quilt. I would love to see a video addressing the problem of borders becoming distorted or wavy. Thanks!
Natalie I am beyond excited that you are getting your own episode !!! I love how you teach and your style. Thank you MSQC for letting Natalie be on you tube too!!!
This was a great episode. I just hear my grandmother saying "the back should always be one color". Bless her soul. Some day I will get that out of my head. I loved the different backs. Makes a whole new quilt. Thank you for the inspiration.
Love having a new MSQC series to watch, this one was very informative. Natalie, you are so creative, I enjoy seeing what you come up with. Your quilt was darling, I just loved your quilt backing. All the quilts shown were so very pretty! ❤
Check out "Just get it done" quilting channel. She has several tutorials about what she calls "after quilts", backings that incorporate leftover blocks or top materials.
I really like the way you said by keeping your long fabric in one piece and fold and stitch the selvedge edge then cut in half. Wow. That will make my life so much easier. Thank you
I have been looking forward to Natalie starting her own show. Always loved when she would participate with her Mom. I agree she's so smart and talented. Glad she's sharing her tips.
I was so thrilled to see Natalie doing this great informative video!!! I was just thinking how nice it would be to see her do something to help us quilters out. Her quilting spot there is just darling.Way to go Natalie !!Please show us more of your great stuff!Thank you!!
This was a great topic..and too often overlooked. Thanks for the great ideas and tips. Your presentations are always concise and without a lot of extra chitchat. Looking forward to more from you, natalie!
Great job Natalie! Can definitely tell that you are gaining more confidence in front of the camera & not looking off to the side as much & smiling much more☺️You have inherited great quilting and teaching skills from Mom, keep up the great work and thanks for all that you do!
This is so helpful, thank you. I have never heard or read anyone explaining backing fully to me before. Now I realise I have spent time and fabric I didn’t need to! Looking forward to more in your series!
I love to hear Natalie’s advice/perspective, she’s so creative and helps get my mind out the box I sometimes get in. I’m looking forward to more episodes of The Final Stitch!!!! I also love love love her pegboard with cross stitch on it....so awesome!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks for showing us those lovely examples of different ways to back a quilt. Look forward to your next tips-and-tricks video. ~Diana from Hamilton (Ontario, Canada).
Hope this becomes a regular series with Natalie. She is quite likable . It is so nice to see someone talking about quilting who enjoys it as much as we do. Backings is a topic that doesn't get a lot of attention, and it seems to be assumed "everyone knows that part of quilting". I like a quilt with personality on both sides. Great job Natalie !
Thank you Natalie, your ease in front of the camera and knowledge of quilting is so appreciated. I’m so excited about your new series and can’t wait for the second episode. ⭐️
I appreciate the fact that Natalie shows very attractive backing using smaller pieces to make a colorful back instead of purchasing the whole thing in one piece. I really enjoyed this new program. Thanks!
Oh Natalie!!! Thank you for speaking about this. I added a 3 rows from my front to extend the fabric on a baby quilt. My husband, who doesn’t know crap about quilting said “it looks like you were too cheap to buy the extra fabric.” I told him it created balance from the front to the back. Finally, someone validated me. Yes, I didn’t want to purchase another yard of something that I didn’t really need, but I thought I was being frugal. 🤪🤨
I have pieced my backing for several years now. I like the fun look and I try using leftover fabric as much as possible. Thanks for the refresher. I can’t wait until the shops open again.
Great presentation Natalie! Your enthusiasm shows! I love to piece backings as well, but do my own FMQ on my domestic machine so don't worry about placing of the pieces so much. I use leftover blocks, or even sew strips of various widths and lengths together to use up, and then add whatever other sections of fabric I have on hand (especially at this time when fabric was harder to come by) to complete the back. Fun and interesting! Cheers from 🇨🇦🍁
I love this episode. I learned from an elderly quilter that she never buys backing fabric. She uses pieces from her stash to back her fabrics. That is what I do to my quilts. My backings are pieced with a bunch of colorful fabrics, whatever I have on hand, and the quilts are always reversible. Hoping to see more of Natalie.
This was a wonderful and informative tutorial. Natalie is a natural, just like her mom! I’m really looking forward to seeing more of these videos from Natalie and the MSQC staff. And thank you for the free pieced backing download!
I always find the best quilt compliment I get is when someone folds one of my quilts with the backing side out because it looks as good and interesting as the front.
Loved this episode and look forward to many more episodes of the Final Stitch. I have always loved seeing Natalie in any video and I'm so happy to see her with her own series.
Thank you Natalie you’ve helped me a lot! I really enjoyed this tutorial about backings! I love the idea of using the extra blocks on the back it’ll unify the quilt!
I found this video super informative. I even sent my daughter-in-law a link so she could watch it. Thank you Natalie! Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming.
Great job Natalie!! I just wanted to share that I always piece the backs of my quilts. I make my quilts as "hugs" for those that receive them and on the back - usually in the "label row" is where I use the extra blocks or fabrics from the front, the label is usually in the middle of this row. I leave enough on the ends so that if some of that gets cut off it's ok, it makes the row look like it is floating on the back. Everyone is always excited to see what's on the back. I actually "design" the backs on graph paper to make sure my back will be big enough. It takes a little longer to complete the quilt, but it uses up extra fabric from the project and make a surprise for the recipient on the back.
I have the worst time trying to figure out how to piece my backings. Just can't seem to conceptualize how to do it. This video has shown me a way I never thought of! I will definitely try it on my next quilt. Thank you, Natalie!
I really enjoyed the final stitch I learned a lot. Excited for episode 2. Natalie you did great job. I hope to see you do more your so much like your Moma.Thank you
It's great that you have your own space! There is a great lady whose site is "Just Get it Done." She has a whole thing on what she calls "after quilts" and she goes into details on how to use all your leftover pieces to make the backing. Hope to see you on air again lady.
Great information. You thoroughly answered questions I've had for quite a while. The questions & comments of the off-camera person were very helpful at getting further explanation or phrasing it in a different way. It made other information very understandable and interesting. I liked the pace, and the tone of this video. Fast enough to not be boring, but low key and not rushed.
Finally, someone showed exactly how the backing is sewn together and how to use directional fabric. Thank you, thank you. I hope someone will show how to use a panel that has a wonky border without cutting it off and how to square it.
Thank you, Natalie, for this series. I have not read the preceding 664 comments to see if someone else mentioned this, but some folks refer to a pieced backing an “after quilt” when it includes one or more elements from the front. Fun stuff!
Hi Natalie! So nice to see you doing "The Final Stitch". I don't live far from MSQC...so I just gotta take the time to come visit you all, and those fabulous fabric stores in Hamilton! Love this today, with the pieced backing! I haven't done a pieced backing yet, but you have encouraged me to do so! Many blessings to you, and your family!
I love everything about the last quilt, charm squares and pieced backing. So very colorful! I've been stressing that the backing had to be one piece, thanks for these gorgeous examples of how wonderful piecing them can be.
What an AWESOME video!!!! I have always struggled with piecing a back and you make it sound so easy. You’re an excellent teacher. I can tell I’m going to learn a lot from this series. Thank you for doing this and thank you for making it free!!!
I love piecing a backing with a pattern as I used make a lot of curtains and I love the satisfaction of doing a good job of matching the pattern thankyou Natalie love how you have your own show you have come a long way since I first saw you a shy young lady keep up the good work kim
Oh my goodness Natalie, What a good topic, so helpful. I didn’t know how to make the backing. That’s why I have often used a wide back. Thank you so much 👏🥰👍 Chris-Raleigh NC
great ideas. I’ve been playing with my backs during the pandemic because I made a quilt front and didn’t have quite enough fabric for the backing. So i sewed some of my scraps from the front together into 2.5 inch squares in a strip and used them somewhat randomly to widen the back in 4 different strips that were spaced evenly top to bottom but varied sided to side. It turned out to be a much quieter, calm, and zen but same colors so I can just flip the quilt over when I need it to be calming. I love it!
Fun! Thank you Natalie. All was helpful and interesting. I especially liked the last one. My first bed sized quilt was sort of like that. I had to keep on adding more borders to make it big enough. My super forgiving son was the recipient - he loved it. Really enjoy the new show. Congratulations.
Hi from Oklahoma I have always enjoyed spending as much time on the back of my quilts as I do on the tops. I call them “ after quilts”. I enjoyed “Final Stitch” please continue this program.
My daughter wanted giraffe fabric on the back of her quilt. She picked 3 different fabrics 2 of them were giraffe spots in 2 different rainbow color themes the other was giraffe animals with a blue background. I took the giraffe with blue as a panel used the more blue tone rainbow as squares on either side to make a 1/2 yard strip then added the general rainbow as the top and bottom. My other daughter wanted galaxy on the back. Not knowing what quilt pattern or size I was going to make I didn't buy enough fabric. My solution was to frame the 2 tapestry sized panels with fabric that worked with it. Several pieces made the back but it worked.
I love Final Stitch. So informative and helpful. I would find it so helpful if you did a video on binding. How to put it on straight sides and how to put it on a scallop edge. I also would find a video on choosing what thread color to quilt with very helpful. Thank you for sharing your amazing gifts with us!
Thanks so much for explaining about piecing the backing for the quilter as opposed to self-quilting. I’m getting ready to piece a back for a small kid’s quilt, and now I know how to assemble it correctly. 🤗
Natalie, great information. I've created a couple of pieced backed quilts. I had no idea I was making so much work for my quilter. I always admired her...now even more so!
I long arm. I have never had an issue w pieced backings. I would bet that as long as its sewn well, she doesn't mind. The trick is to use a deeper seam, usually 1/2 inch, and a slightly shorter stitch length. I personally prefer the seams ironed to the side, but I know longarmers who want them pressed open. Just ask her what she prefers. 🙂
Natalie, I love your short hairstyle - so fashionable and flattering. I have seen some older videos of you and you seem more comfortable and confident now. Yeah Natalie!!
I love the quilt backings. I have been doing this for years. When I have a backing I use it but you don’t always have the large backing fabric. I love your attitude Natalie. Is this the first show? Lovely show. Great smile. Keeping the Doan tradition!
