The Fort to Sea trail follows the possible route that Lewis and Clark would have taken from Fort Clatsop (where they camped in the winter of 1805-1806) to Sunset Beach, 6.5 miles (one way).
Tips: Be sure not to park within the gates of the National Historical Visitor Center and Museum since they may close and lock the gates before you make it back from the hike. There is a parking lot across the road that does not lock after hours.
If you are only planning to walk one way, it is best to have a car waiting for you at Sunset Beach since Uber and Lift do not work in the area (as of August 2024). There may be a taxi service out of Astoria but this was not proven reliable.
Another option is to catch the bus for a short ride that will drop you off on Highway 101 where the trail meets the highway, knocking off a couple miles of your journey back. The cash-only bus service is possible if you’re willing to wait for the bus at Sunset Lake Public Park on the corner of Sunset Beach Lane and Lewis Road. Be sure to ask the driver (heading North) to drop you off at Camp Rilea and the Fort to Sea trail. This bus trip will not get you back to the Fort but it will cut out a substantial amount of the hike if you need that assistance. For the bus routes' current pricing check out nwconnector.org
You are on the Oregon coast and the weather changes quickly, pack accordingly. A rain jacket is recommended, even in the summer.
