The Final Years of the Southern Slam Door Class 415 4-EBP, Class 411 4-CEP, Class 421 4-CIG and Class 424 4-VEP EMUs. During the 1990s and into the early 2000s I tried to record as many of the 1st generation, slam door, third rail electric multiple units as i could as I knew their days were numbered. This slideshow made up from scanned slides from my archive that I took during this period.

I suppose the end of slam door trains, also meant the end of guards and the "bzz bzz". A win win for the shareholding penny pinchers.

Some excellent photos. A VEP in Southern livery takes a bit of getting used to!

Videos like these prove second-hand nostalgia is very much a thing lol I may cop a bit of flak for this, but SWT's first livery (as seen at 2:50, 2:59 & 3:48) was one of the best to emerge from the kaleidoscope of early privatisation liveries, along with the first Virgin livery (as applied to loco-hauled stock and HSTs), FGW's 'Fag Packet' (personally my fave livery from that particular franchise, tied with Great Western's 'Merlin'), the first GNER livery (lacking the later red doors, the ex-NoL Eurostars looked jawdropping in it) and - cheating slightly with this one tbh lol - Strathclyde Passenger Transport's 'Carmine/Cream' (the livery I grew up with, the 4 Class 303s that got it & the 320/3s looked particularly fetching in it).
