The Fine Art of Painting With Palette Knife Inspiring Millions to paint outdoors This video is about Touch Move and Inspire. Get a free Book at his website www.StefanBaumann.com. The paintings of Stefan Baumann reveal the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer to distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed. With the huge success of Baumann’s weekly PBS television series “The Grand View: America’s National Parks through the Eyes of an Artist,” millions of people witness for themselves the magic Stefan portrays on canvas, his passion for nature and the American landscape. By distilling his love of nature into a luminous painting of brilliant, saturated color that transcends conventional landscape and wildlife art, Baumann has captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. Each painting becomes an experience rather than merely a picture - a vivid manifestation of his special and personal union with nature and the outdoor world. Through his mastery of light, color and artful composition, Baumann invites you to experience nature in its purity. It is no wonder that for many years distinguished American collectors, including former presidents and financial icons, have sought out his work.

Again, Stefan, great information. I like creating texture using a painting knife with modeling paste, and then I use glazes to apply the color. I like to wipe off the raised areas of the texture to reveal the lighter paint. I usually like to first paint the lights and then build up to the darks.

Hadn’t seen a Stefan painting video in awhile and was real glad to see this palette knife offering - loved it & hope there’s more palette knife teachings by Stefan :)

Love this video. I have painted with a knife - actually have quite a few different blades. I sometimes use them exclusively, or with a brush - depends upon the effect I am trying to achieve. I keep learning from watching your videos and your critiques. Thank you for your time and effort in sharing your knowledge and videos.

Improve your cheap knife! Thin the blade to get the soft flexibility you need. I use a power grinder and/or sander to thin the blade. Keep dipping it in cold water, the blade is so thin that it overheats in a flash. Flex the blade by hand, make sure it forms an even arc. I prefer more flex at the tip. I have lots of knives but only two antique Italian knives that do my best work, and I'm afraid they will break eventually. I do almost all my work with knives. I like my Liquin freestyle knives better than other modern mass produced knives because they have no welded frog where the handle meets the blade to collect paint and they start out pretty good. I just ordered 9 more in three sizes to grind the heck out of with no concerns. I also ordered a Holbein MX 2 and I hope it is as soft and flexible as my irreplaceable Italian antiques. Thank you Stephan for that knive brand tip and for all your sharing of knowledge - you have helped me tremendously. EDIT: My Holbein arrived in less than 24 hrs. and it is indeed very flexible, I believe it will work superbly.

A palette knife isn't a weapon of choice but will give it a try.

Stefan, when were you in Cayucos? It's just up the road from me. Are you doing any other central coast events?

I don’t see why you say they look cheap? I love these hotel paintings. For me some of the brush paintings look cheesy when they are overworked. The painting just behind you looks a bit cheap and chalky; love the framing though. You don’t get this overworked feeling with a palette knife, unless if you spend like 50 hours for a painting.

I tried painting with a knife only if I try to create texture in mountains and rocks I sort of got it but I m getting there

You are correct, Luis. It is to create an effect. I did not know that until watching this video. It makes sense now. Enjoy your work!

The pear ... can anyone explain how a shadow and a light source end up behind the pear? That painting is lovely but the lighting and shade seem all wrong

Noooo, the video ended too early! I was wrapped up with Stefan's comments and it cut off. Ah well. Since I paint exclusively with a knife, I found a lot of great information in this video. I paint only with the 7 dollar versions from Black, but I'm going to give a Holbein a try after watching this. Thanks for posting this, Stefan. Your insights are greatly appreciated.

Wouldn't the assignments be more meaningful to the students if you gave instruction during the same lecture that you assign the homework...for instance discuss rough texture in transition areas rather than in shadow and highlight areas, smoother, thinner (less paint) in shadow areas etc, so then when the homework paintings are presented those issues would be non-existant and discussion could revolve around other possible refinements.

I have to express my disappointment with these workshops. I kept having allergic reactions to the liquin. I caught Stefan spending more time with Judy, and it really ticked me off😡😠. My glazes got all screwed up because Stefan told me to add two drops of milk to keep the mixture from going too transparent. The other big issue was absolutely NO childcare provided. I also had issues with gender specific restrooms. Not fluid friendly. Stefan refuses to pay for the parking issue we had, and I caught him stealing candy bars off one of the student's taborets. Please stop bashing Islam too, we're not all Christian you know. Everything turned into a racial issue. Please make some improvements or mt. Rashid is going to be another financial disaster.

Honestly, you're upset because there was no childcare and he didn't pay for your parking?

I'm too far away, but would love to attend a workshop. I would not go to be taken care of, fed, parked, toileted, or flirted with. I expect to take care of my own exposure to allergens that affect me. I would go because Stephan's insights into paintings are remarkable and helpful. He has a gift. When painting I'm too close to my work to always see what needs to be improved. For your own joy in life, try substituting thankfulness in place of complaining and you will find it uplifts your spirit.

You had issues with gender specific restrooms?!!! I would have issues with non-gender specific restrooms. The world doesn't revolve around you. Your children, your parking, your allergies, your gender "issues" and jealousies are your responsibility, not Stefans.
