This was very good. The vowel/consonant length reminds me of Spanish where a gender change in a word can give it an entirely different meaning - it can even be rude! - so one has to be careful. Thank you Emmi!!

Written and spoken Finnish are very different. You learn a word or a grammar construction in written Finnish, then you also have to learn 2 or 3 variants that are used in the spoken Finnish.

The good news is once you get familiar with some recurring constructions it gets easier! Thanks for the comment 🙂

@@learnfinnishwithfinkingcap I am still at the beginning of the road, and I haven't recognized the patterns, yet. But I am happy about the news, that there are any, it will make things easier once I know them. Thank you.

@@navrasicsi Here's a tip: Learn chunks like: I want to... (Haluan + verb) / I didn't know... (En tiennyt...) / I would have like to + verb... (Olisin halunnut + verb) and ask ChatGPT for options both in standard and spoken Finnish. Try to come up with ones that you use often in everyday life. You'll end up having lots of templates, to which you just insert the word that fits the context you're in. Hmm, maybe I'll make a video about this!

omg, thank u so much! i started to learn yesterday and this video made me feel even more interested. As a portuguese native speaker, i think some words is kinda hard to remember haha but i like it. One question: i just know a few things and words, you think that is a good idea to change the language on my cellphone to Finnish already?

Moi Lorena! Thanks for the comment, I'm glad this was helpful. Go for it, change your phone to Finnish! Perhaps you could make a cheat sheet of the main vocabulary and stick it on your fridge door, in case you ever get stuck?

@@learnfinnishwithfinkingcap oh thank u! i'll do it, i'm using some apps to vocabulary and i think can be useful too, to remember the words. Thank u so much!

Please can you tell me when to use capital letters, and also I would like to know if you have mixed letters like sh or ch in Finnish language?
@learnfinnishwithfinkingcap
@learnfinnishwithfinkingcap 4 года назад
Moi! Capital letters are used less than in English. When talking about a language, use small letters: suomi. When talking about the country, use capital letter: Suomi. When talking about a citizen of a country, use a small letter: suomalainen. Months, weekdays, holidays like Christmas and Easter - small. Those were the first ones that came to mind!

In Finnish we only use capital letters when referencing to a name: country, street, city, book, movie, people/animal names etc. And of course at the beginning of the sentence. Everything else with small letters.

Sh is written as š in Finnish. It is rarely used, the only word I know is šakki (chess). It is so rare that the standard Finnish keyboard layout does not have it. Besides that it is used in Russian names. Ch is not used. There is also ž which is used on Russian names. An important thing is that languages are not capitalized: Suomi is a country and suomi is a language. Similarly adjectives are not capitalized: suomalainen.
