I’m learning sign language because my English teacher put me and my best friends on opposite sides of the room and we need some way to communicate Edit 1 year later: the friend turned out to be toxic so I dropped her but we move forward

I’m here to learn sign language in case I meet someone who is hard of hearing and I want to talk to them in a way that’s easier for them to understand. It will be especially good since I’m only 13 and need to prepare for any situation. Also, I fear my brother will soon go deaf and it worries me so much so I want to learn to help him if he soon goes deaf.
I am also hard of hearing because of an acident. i learn asl cause someday my condition will get so bad. One of my friends is deaf so most of my class learned. its fun for that one class to have a language to speak in that all the rest dont understand. im still learning. im also 13.
I’m turning 13 and I feel like I’m gonna encounter someone who is hard of hearing and will regret not being able to talk to them it’s also pretty cool not speaking with your voice
I'm trying to learn ASL because of my panic attacks and anxiety. i end up not able to speak, it just gets to much to handle especially with the many things that tend to run through my mind... (thank you so much for creating these courses, i'm able to navigate without getting confused and i now know where to start.)
That’s one of the reasons I’m learning and planing on making my mom learn. I’m hopefully getting a service dog to help with my chronic anxiety disorders and my panic disorder.
You are not only a great signer, but, you are the best signing teacher. Here's why: -You repeat signs slowly -You show the signs from different positions;. -You pause/slowly show, describe the initial sign position. -You show how NOT to do the sign. (I now know to do mother & father from a more sideways starting point. I loved you video. I just subascribed. Please post more. BTW, I'm hearing, Iget my hearing aids next week, the students I teach love to learn sign, and signing is FUN. Your new friend, Mike
Theres a lady that comes into the pizza place i work at and she just shows us her phone. I wanna be able to give her the same experience everyone has. I noticed she signed thank you and assumed she might be deaf as well as she didnt respond if she wasnt looking at me. I hope itll make her happy once im able to do her order in sign language
That is great! I have a deaf brother and none of us in the family know very much sign language. At 54 years old , he doesn't enjoy family get togethers and it makes it hard to communicate with him. We should learn he What a great way to grow closer to each other. Very proud of you Ana!
Amazing how people can become so fluent in this and do it so quickly, that's what's hard for me to understand is people that are deaf they sign so quickly it's almost impossible for a beginner to understand
All you need to do is ask them too slow down! My son's deaf, and we have a hard time communicating with him because of it. Oddly enough my government will provide aides to teach him but not the family!
This is a flaw we need to change. spend our money where it’s needed to help family’s. My son is also deaf and this is a challenge for myself especially now that I work such long hours but the school of deaf riverside every Wednesday 6oclock if your in CALIFORNIA.
@@Tytheuncreator I think here in Michigan instructors will go into the home to help new parents with learning sign upon request. From what I understand few parents take them up on it, mainly the mothers. I was fortunate a church an hour away offered free sign classes and I took them up for about a year-and-a-half. Family issues came up and I needed to attend to those. Now my niece has an aunt and uncle in laws who are deaf and I'm trying to brush up on my sign language to encourage their family to improve their sign skills. I miss my friends who are deaf but I cannot easily travel to visit with them.
I've been learning sign language for a while now and recently i went to a track meet / field day where there was other schools involved. I saw some other kids from another school signing and they each had hearing aids on so I assumed they were deaf. At the end of the meet I went over to there interpreter and/or teacher and signed a few words. The kids looked so surprised and happy. They even waved at me! It was really nice and I can't wait to meet them again next year (I'm going to a different middle school so hopefully they will be there! ) Anyway this video really helped when I first started out! Thanks!!
That's AMAZING!! I work backstage crew at our community theater, and for each show we do, at least two of the performances are ASL interpreted. I know very basic signs, and it makes me so happy when I see kids sitting in the front rows clapping in sign language. Maybe I'm a person of simple pleasures, but it makes me happy when I can sign hello to them and they sign back.
A year ago I tried to learn asl and lost motivation. But now Im learning again and this video has been my main source and has helped me a lot to form conversations. I put it on my laptop in slow motion and just repeat with you until I learn it. I learned all 100 words in 4 days. Thank you!! ❤
I'm learning sign language because I think that it should just be something that everyone knows. A deaf person came to me to order about 6 years ago and I felt awful that I couldn't communicate with them. Its a beautiful language and a great culture. I've studied bits and pieces, I've gotten books over the years and I'm happy to be picking it back up again. I'm also teaching my 3 Year old I'm not fluent but I can have a full conversion but watching a 3 year old sign is the most adorable thing in the world. She's starting to use sign language everyday now.
I'm almost 12 and I just started ASL today because I decided I wanted to do it and this video is very useful. Thanks! I can now talk to my friends parents☺ I only know the alphabet, a few numbers, and this everything in this video.
Talia Elizabeth there is an asl club after school and i learned so much from it. i can now talk fluently with a young deaf girl at my school. i taught the alphabet to my sisters so i can just spell to them for things like hurry up or come on.
Talia Elizabeth Check out the My Smart Hands apps, about three of them are free and really helpful! That's where I started a few days ago and I agree that this video is helpful, I love the repetition.
The Dance Den its a tv show about def people. it was on abc family. its on netflix and i love it. its over now tho but all the eps r on netflix. it will teach u a lot about the def community. my baby is 18 months and now knows 159 signs! its amazing!
I have followed her and she has been one of the best, nothing fast and repetitive and clear hands I learned quick, with no frustration. Thank you Ms. Barlow
Cossete Williamson Are u deaf or do you have a hard tome hearing. Because there is a big difference. I cant hear well but Im not deaf. Because I can't hear well at my age I want to learn I want to learn just in case. And I know a lot of family and friends that are deaf that had to learn when they were deaf. I love the language so if I dont go deaf I still will know another language
I have 2% hearing which is USELESS in the real world. I lost my hearing at 18 so it has been hard for me to learn ASL because I am so used to speaking and hearing. Now, I hope I can learn to be fluent. It's hard being able to speak and not hear, to understand and not sign well. Ugh.
Carmen Barr I am very sorry. I hope that you can learn sign language fluently soon. I don't know it but I want to just for fun and to be able to communicate with people like you. Best of wishes
I’ve always wanted to learn ASL. Watching your motions and learning it with no sound was a whole different experience. Sign language is so beautiful and powerful. ❤️
i am a begginer my son is 3 years old and he doesn't speak but he is a hearing kid so i tell my self to find a way to comunicate with him because sometimes he is crying and i don't know why so i am teaching him a few words with sign and he is learning this video is going to be very helpful💜
Monny my daughter was the same way i had her enrolled in speach therapy and it has been amazing i also tought her a bit of sign witch also helped her learn how to say the words as well and a good tip is to read to him and have him lable things in the pictures
Your son sounds like my brother. He can hear perfectly well but dosnt speak. He points at something and screams instead of talking. We all started to learn BSL to communticate with him and he's doing well. He was recently diagnosed with autism. Maybe something you could check out for.
@@dashi1838 They are essentially two different languages and not mutually intelligible. ASL has a lot more in common with French Sign Language than British.
Thank you so much for sharing. My 8 year old has taken interest in the asl interpreter on the news. So i found you. Today we took your session and boy is this a mimi workout. Much respect to all ASL interpreters! We noticed that many of the signs are things we do instinctively. Again thanks for sharing. ✌
Excellent video thank you! My husband because of and hereditary condition has finally lost his hearing and now we are trying to learn sign language together. I like the way you don’t speak when you do the signs you just show the signs and then print the word on the screen this is very effective for me thank you!
Me and my 7 y/o niece r learning sign language starting with this video! We learn 5 words each day n order! And then practice the same 5 plus the new 5 each day and so on and so forth
Wow I remember more signs than I thought. That made me happy. I really wish I had people to sign with whether it's a nice deaf person or hearers who wanna study together
I got interested in learning sign language from watching Switched At Birth on Netflix. I think everyone should learn it. You do a great job of teaching it. I love how you repeat the signs several times. I will have to practice daily to remember them. Thanks and keep making more of these videos please.
I just got a retail job and was informed we have 2 deaf customers and your video helped out a lot!! I already took ASL but need a refresher. Thank you so much (:
I want to learn sign language because I'm very interested in it and I'm a sales assistant, and there once was a man who wasn't able to hear or speak properly. He came into our shop alone and we had difficulties understanding him. I don't want that to happen again. I want everyone to feel included and accepted. The man kinda stayed in my head because normally I can chit-chat with my customers, and that's what I love about this job, but when you suddenly can't do that, it's a bit weird. I hope I can learn it. (I'm working on my english too right now, so sorry if I made any mistakes, it's my second language)
Hey! I'm a teacher who want to learn how to sign to be able to communicate with a student in one of my classes without having to always go through our interpreter. This video gave me a fantastic and quick (which is very important for a teacher with SO much work to do for the entire class) way of learning some basic signs.
I've watched asl video for the last 3 months and i can say that you showed the most important words for asl communication .thank you looking forward to learning more from you
my fascination with ASL started when I started watching Switched at Birth and has only grown since then. It's such an amazing second language to learn and I have no plans on stopping until I'm fluent! it's been a long ride and continues to be, but in every way it is worth it.
cant wait for you to learn enough ASL to realize that switched at birth uses a lot of Signed Exact English! that show helped my desire to learn asl too but it's important to understand that you shouldn't try and learn from watching any TV shows because they aren't using ASL, it's a sort of kind of version of asl that is more for the hearing people who watch the show.
This is the best lady . She made me teach myself 4 phrases with these words and.. my parents are impressed . My mum said If I keep going I will keep going I'll have a great job in the future
When I first started speaking, I was taught english and basic sign language. As I got older I stopped learning, and it always bugged me for some reason. I started doing backstage work last year and with every show we do, at least two of them are ASL interpreted. Someway somehow that made me want to learn sign language again. Now here we are!

Honestly idk why but I find sign language so interesting. I think it’s really cool that I can speak without even needing to talk and I am sure I can use this to help me get jobs since I’ll know another language. And your videos are the ones that have proved the most helpful! I can’t afford and don’t know of any classes so yea!
What an excellent video! I'm not deaf, and I don't know any deaf people, but I thought it'd be interesting to learn. I stumbled upon your video and it's great, I love the way you show the hand positions before the signs, and used a lot of helpful facial expressions to put meaning behind the signs, too. Unfortunately I'm English so couldn't ever use these here, but it's a great video nonetheless!! Well done :)
I’m going to watch this video everyday !. I’ve always wanted to learn to sign, it’s the one language I always wanted to know, and I recently met the love of my life and he knows sign, his mom is deaf. So thanks for this. Great video!
I wanted to brush up on my sign language, and sure enough, I got caught by my 3 kids! Ages 9, 5, and 2. They all had so much fun signing to this video I guess we are now adding sign language to our homeschool curriculum!! Great video! Can't wait to watch more with my kids! :)
I am Cynthia worked at UTech and would love to continue learning these signs with your help. This was a powerful way to kick-start my learning experience. Thank you.
you are kind of teacher I love the most ! I started following your lessons from 2019 and I was just able to talk it fluently but i also going down with it when I started my universites but today I'm so happy to get you again and I'm sure now I will know this until my whole life..so proud of you my teacher
I'm new to your channel. Do you have a video on health ASL? if not, can you do a video where I can learn to say stuff like "I'm dehydrated" "I'm allergic to..." "My blood sugar is low" "I'm hypoglycemic" "My blood pressure is high" "I'm a diabetic" "I'm prone to migraines" and also "I have dehydration issues" I need to learn that because i do have dehydration issues. If you don't have a video on this stuff will you please make one?
Thank you for teaching us how to do sign language, I am bilingual and I want to learn how to speak Italian, but also how to speak in sign language. This video has helped me a lot!! thank you soooo much. For the person who is reading this comment bless you and have a nice day.
This was our very first ASL video and has launched our study. After two courses at St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf we will always be grateful to Rochelle.
Thank you so much for sharing this, I work with developmentally disabled young people and some sign. I am just learning, and your video has been very helpful.
I think she did that on purpose so that you can fully learn the sign and not just memorize the video. Kinda how some people can't tell you the order of the letters of the Alphabet unless they sing the song, I think she doesn't want you to memorize the signs by association and instead fully learn the signs.
Crippled_ Clay i agree. when i took asl a few years back, it was all taught out of order, so we wouldn't just memorize the order of the words...and.instead learn the signs
thank you! I've been putting off learning last few years, as I can read lips. It's time I prepare for complete deafness, so thank you so much? I'll keep watching and learning. You're a fine teacher!
I have a deaf patient she is long term care I want to communicate with her. I think she is trying to teach me sign. But I don't know the basics. So thank you so much. I will keep trying to learn for her. Thank you again.
I found it helpful to do the signs and then pause it after you learn every individual word, repeat them all in order and if you forget one, restart from there.
I am a PA and I've always wanted to learn ASL in order to communicate with deaf patients. I learned the alphabet and a few simple phases when I was in 2nd grade, but now I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can (so I don't have to spell out words! Lol) thanks for your videos!
Here learning due to inspiration from LARP... and because deaf culture is neat. ... And because ASL is easier for my brain to remember when I blank out. You know when you cross through a doorway and can't remember what you were going there for? Since I started learning ASL, I don't forget anymore because sometimes my hands remember the word even when my brain doesn't. (Usually it's the sign for 'drink', I always forget to drink water...)
I'm a stroke survivor. My hearing is intact but I am learning asl in order to functionally rehabilitate my affected arm. Some signs are difficult but Rochelle makes the process of learning a joy.
This is a fantastic video. I took a couple classes years ago but didn't use it. I want to refresh my knowledge to sign with my hard-of-hearing daughter and others. I like that you use the important facial expressions along with signing! Also, good background and clothes to help the signs clear.
My daughter absolutely loves learning sign language for us to use with each other. So, we learn together. We are trying to learn much more than the 3 or 4 that we remember. We are going to learn as many as possible this year
Those who are trying to learn try this without after watching the video . Out Like After Dad Know People Place No he's Love Please Now Dad Same Bad School Friend Some Girl Sometimes Last Sorry Still Tell Them Thank you That Some It Cold Little thing Then think Work See If Time See To See
LOOK up lifeprint it is a great teacher video school also. Actually a university with a college professor teaching. Bill Vickers is his name. I love three sites different but all very effective.
Thank you for being inspiring to learn sign language I really enjoyed you I'm having trouble getting into your website continue to do what you're called to do this is great you're a very good teacher
Thanks! This video was so nice with out all the extra talking that other ASL videos have. I'm actually recently deaf, so the extra stuff doesn't help me. Thanks again for making this!
