Senior Curator of Musical Collections and Cultures Mimi Waitzman tells us about the advent of the French Horn in England, looking at one particularly significant example in the Music Gallery.
William Bull, the designer of this horn, also has a royal connection. Bull was Trumpeter Extraordinary to Charles II, as well as serving under James II and William III. Later in life he made 'hearing horns' - aids for the hard of hearing - as well as brass wind instruments.
Only four horns made by William Bull survive and we are very lucky to have in our collection.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is an inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free attraction in South London’s Forest Hill. We’ve been open since Victorian times, when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, our collection has grown tenfold and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium, Butterfly House and natural history collection.
Unusually for such an important museum, you can see our collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some of our objects.
