@@Judgement_Kazzy I read a really good book about this entire thing, and man you wouldn’t believe how mad Jobs was about this price of junk. Like my man was actually livid about what Motorola did during their partnership, because he expected and pretty much demanded something truly special (like he was known to do), and as you can see here the Motorola phone ain’t it. You can taste even to this day the giddy excitement and passion for the iPhone in that first conference (even tho the first gen iPhone was junk in its own right), which makes hearing him talk about the Motorola even funnier. No passion at all, and even a sarcastic bite if you listen hard enough.
@@LazarNaskov Well, the first iPhone was a much more respectable kind of junk than this. Really more of a "It's a mess because it's the first of its kind, and the tech needs more time to improve" kind of junk.
You can almost see the point where Steve Jobs thought to himself ‘ this shit is the best they could do?’ You know he went straight off stage and told everyone to make the iPhone.
I just hope to /GOD/ some poor intern in the engineering department didn't end up getting drilled for the playback issue on stage. Knowing Jobs, though, that probably happened regardless.
I had this phone and actually really liked it. The 100 song limitation wasn't due to ram or any other hardware limitation. It was a software limitation imposed by Apple so that the phone wouldn't steal as much market share from the ipod.
Sony's non-Playstation tech was a fucking miserable ecosystem in the 90s and 2000s. Proprietary connectors for goddamn EVERYTHING, and rarely shared across devices. >proprietary data/ charging cables, often differing across devices for no good reason >proprietary video output ports (to be fair this was mostly for their UMPCs) >proprietary memory cards (not a connector but worth mentioning)
@@nameunn5479 very very embarrassing, specially if the same companies are also increasing the amount of peripherals just for the same functionality as older models, and specially if they made you buy separate cables.
I forgot how bad screens use to be. I’m happy we are living in the days that we have to genuinely fight over what a humans eye is capable of seeing because we are reaching that point.
@@elesjuan Yeah man, in school I used to hold my phone under the desk and text friends while pretending to work, it would be damn near impossible to do that on a touch screen, I really miss the days of actual buttons
@@jammer_jammie_jam Okay, I read your comment, gave a chuckle, left the comment, then fully realized just what you said and had to come back as it gave me a good laugh 😂😂😂. Thank you for that.
I remember selling these back in the day. It was trash. Not because it was 2005 but because, at the time, Sony Ericsson were churning out incredible MP3 playing handsets. Even by today's standards, they were great. The W800i was in a completely different league. I got one for an ex girlfriend who messaged me in 2018 to say she had only just retired it :) That little W800i outlived our relationship by over a decade :) On a related note, I recall being told by a Moto sales guy that the 100 songs limitation was actually a deliberate software bork from Apple who didn't want the Moto phone eating too much into shuffle/Nano sales.
I had this phone and the speakers were BLOWING THE SHIT OUT OF IT! We had real small subwoofers there, so it was mindblowing. I think even iPhone doesn't have that much bass as this little dude. It was the best phone speaker-wise.
Getting iTunes to work properly with this phone was a proper pain in the ass, and when it did it wouldn't do it consistently. I believe I used a 15 year old copy of itunes on Windows 10 for it.
When he said people on RU-vid just plugs it in and it works ... probably 10 months of fixing and finding the correct solution. Then also cutting out the part of how slow it is
That's why I never intend to throw my original iTunes CD that came with my 1st-gen Nano. It may prove useful when dealing with vintage iPods down the line
@і lоve ѓаріиg ѕмаll сhіlↁѓeи 😂 im literally only replying so the username of this bot is preserved for everyone to see. EDIT: damnit i think a youtube update got rid of the name. It was something like "I LIKE TO DIDDLE LITTLE KIDS" for those wondering.
I feel like there needs to be some major change in a physical feature. I don't really see something as major as flip phone to smart phone happening any time soon, unless fingerprint scanners become archaic enough
Maybe a few. Most slab phones are way too forgetable. We'll most likely see nostalgia for specific apps and versions of Android or iOS, rather than nostalgia for the hardware.
It’s just like when RCA launched the 45 and tried to say the LP was rubbish because “everyone listens to singles anyway”. A company desperately trying to justify _less_ maximum runtime is never a good look.
LOL. Why does this suddenly remind me of when Google started rolling out gigabit fiber to my city. Comcast cable started running advertisement campaigns literally saying "nobody needs gigabit internet." Fast forward just a few short years and they too started to offer """GIGABIT""" internet. Sitting here with my 2000mbps up, 2000mbps down fiber to the house internet, that the shitty """gigabit""" internet that comcrap sells ya (which costs more than my 2gbps fiber) gets MAYBE 500-700mbps down and 15mbps up. SHITTY DOCSIS FOR THE LOSE. LOL
It might not have been what they really thought. We've had all manner of nonsense quotes from execs who *have* to defend their product, even if its made a mis-step. Ones that would come to mind would be like Sony trying to say the PS3 6-Axis didn't have rumble/force feedback because it was a "Last generation technology"
I liked their idea of Moto Z series, where they released base phone with upgraded hardware but you could expand it through expansions. Personally loved True Zoom for it's... optical zoom. Albeit they kept it for themselves so noone else would make other or better expansions....
I loved this phone when it was new. There were all kinds of modding communities for it where you could crank up the speakers on the phone. It had great speakers for the time.
Not only the stereo speakers were awesome (I'd bet they still sound better than most modern smartphones), they also had RGB LEDs built-in. It was truly amazing.
Still have my "Japan's first answer to the iPhone", the Sharp IS03 (such a catchy name). Bit dinged up, but still working - the battery holds a charge like it's brand new. The screen even beat out the Retina Display in 2010, at 960 x 640 it looked _sharp._
You're lucky. My iPhone 5's battery went wrong after just 11 months, my iPhone 6S's after 25 months (had to take pictures at Hyper Japan 2018 using my 0.3 megapixel 3DS instead!) and my XS's battery went wrong less than 3 years after I got that phone! If my 14 Pro's battery is still good by mid 2026, I'd be MOST surprised! (In a good way)
@@adultmoshifan87 most smartphone batteries last between 300-500 charges until their charging capacity declines. 3 years is pretty good if it was used everyday. (That's 1095 charges if you plug it everyday! More than twice it's optimal lifetime)
A mate of mine had the ROKR. The best thing about it was the tight vibration tuning. it just felt futuristic. Even today, you can feel the difference between a high end phone and a cheapy by the way they tune the vibration motor.
Another straight up banger as always. I've always been into vintage and obscure devices and accessories, and your channel helped me further that interest even more!
@@9.5.9.5 dude he's literally called dankpods of course he'd be a fanboy, maybe you should change your attitude and learn to live with the fact that fanboys exist and they'res nothing wrong with it
@@mischiefthedegenerateratto7464 yeah, there's nothing wrong with them existing, the only wrong thing is that they stan the company and don't listen to genuinely good opinions
Wonder if Lord Pod of Dank will ever cover the Apple Newton at some point. Impressive for its time (still had plenty of issues though) and it’d be interesting to see what he’d have to say about it.
Impressive for it's time if you didn't know about the IBM Simon and immediately lost all it's credibility when US Robotics started selling the Pilot (Aka Franklin Planner) in 96, just about 2 years later. There's Apple for ya
If I still had my old MP120 I'd have totally thrown it over to him. I had a PCMCIA card with a guide for Apple sales employees to understand the Macintosh line.
If you have heard of the Apple Newton, check out Ashens video of the English knock off of it. The Amstrad Penpad, it is genuinely insane how much of an awful knock off it is
That "Worms Knockoff" was on the Razr too, I remember my sister and I playing it on long road trips sometimes. Also, you'll find certain versions of iTunes stop supporting devices, even though they say they don't, I still need to run old versions of iTunes to be able to use ipod touches properly
Motorola’s decline has been something to watch. I worked next door to a massive Motorola office before covid. I went back for the first time in 2 years and the Motorola office has been completely flattened, wiped off the face of the earth. I know they still work on commercial and business stuff but for the average consumer they simply don’t exist anymore.
They’re still quite present in the phone space, their low to mid end phones are fairly competitive for the price. It’s not a famous brand anymore, but saying they don’t exist for the average consumer is a bit much when Moto smartphones have solid sales.
@@photonicpizza1466 Yup I have one. Moto G Stylus (2021) despite wifi and 4G LTE (when I'm out usually) cutting out from time to time (the latter being resolved by restarting the phone), it's not too bad. I agree with what you said about moto not existing for the avg consumer being a bit much.
Just want to say that I appreciate the commitment to the moto nugg. Over 5 months is a hell of a long time to stick with a video idea, and while it didn't end up working like you wanted, it ended up being a great video. Definitely worth it 👍
Oh wow, I played a slightly older version of that worms knockoff game at 8:54 all the time when I was younger. Was loads of fun passing it back and forth with my bro in the car.
Hey Dank! It’s me from the Vince Jones concert last night. It was an honour meeting you! Keep uploading bangers and good luck with all your plans for this channel ✌️

Love your vids man Honestly you’re a big inspiration to me. I’ve been watching you since day one. Thank you for supporting me without even knowing you do it.
I had the motorola E398 and that was a brilliant phone. The side speakers lot up with rgb, it sounded great and came with some pretty decent software to convert songs to mp3
Started watching your videos when I found your review on the airpod max (still on the fence). Since then I’ve started finding and buying old iPods with the help from my partner who works in a skip yard and brings them home as well. Love watching your videos and frank!
I had an e398 at one point. The thing i remember most was the loudspeaker was pretty great. Compared to everything else it was actually loud and sounded like it had a sub in it.
Yep, I had and still have an e398. Probably the phone with the best sounding speakers I've had. Probably still works, though the rubberized parts of the phone started becoming sticky like 2 years ago and I haven't touched it since. Also the charger port functions in only a specific angle so it's hard to charge, battery doesn't hold much either. But I remember I brought it to school in like 2012-2013 and we listened to music on it with some of my friends back then, somehow it worked fine with a 4GB SD card even though it's not supported.
Never knew these existed and also thx for getting me back into iPods I swear because of you I now have 6 iPods, I got the touch guys, the nanos that im scared that they’ll eventually just explode, a mini, really mate thanks
I had one of these in high school, it was really good as a device as a phone an as a projectile for throwing at your friends, quite solid construction.
I absolutely loved this phone. I begged my parents for this phone back in the day. I specifically remember how long it took to load the music on the phone.
The Nano was my favorite iPod second to the 4-button iPod only (which I modded heavily!). Had rockbox firmware and played Doom on that thing on the way to school. Love both. And only both. Imagine if this phone was the new apple/Motorola flagship Collab? Imagine if it was any good? Imagine where the tech scene would be at right now?
I remember when this was brand new. I already then thought it was a failed attempt; I always had the theory that Jobs did that on purpose to weaken Motorola (one of the biggest players in mobile phones back then) in anticipation of the iPhone. Apple had been working on that at this point already, so I thought it kind of fit the narrative, as conspiracy-ish as it may sound.
Cell phones peaked at the Razr and no one can convince me otherwise. I don't care how sleek and shiny the next slim box that comes out is, the Razr's design is the pinnacle
I think you might need an older version of iTunes, specifically from this CD, and see if that works cause I've heard that sync is no longer compatible with this phone on later versions.
I had this phone, still have it! I had the black one though (Motorola E398) and they did a collab with Black Eyed Peas with that model. that's why there were already presaved BEP ringtones on this one. Man, I loved this phone. I felt so cool with this tiny phone. The coolest part was the speakers on the side - they had colorful lights built in. So whenever you played music, or someone texted/called you, it would start to flash those colorful lights around like you were in a disco or something. One of my favorite phones I had back then, so mate dankpods - thank you very much that you made this video. Absolute favorite! 🙌🏻 Greetings from Austria (Australia's ugly cousin), Ellie
The day I discovered your channel I’ve been waiting for the day the Rokr appeared and it went exactly how I expected!! 🤣 I had a bunch of these (yes bunch) and I freaking loved them. I’ve now given my self to find them and attempt to put scarlet fire on one. If it works. It’s yours.
Pretty cool seeing some of Motorola's failures, considering I own and use a Motorola as my current phone. Not one the new Razrs but I seriously want one, they are so cool.
@@Minitrucker231 ayo another one 5g ace owner, it's my second motorola though (had a moto e in 2015), that said i really wanted a z2/z3 but my old phone was still working at the time. i like my one 5g ace (128gb, sd card slot, headphone jack, huge battery and not too expensive) but the camera is absolute garbage compared to my old p20 huawei, and the huawei is four years old at this point
@@oliviersavard8676 I'm not too fussed about the camera. Tbh it's a ton better than what I'm used to so it's not a deal breaker for me. I've had two Moto E's, a G7 Play and a G Power (2021). The G7 and the G Power are still being used, the G7 as my iPod of sorts (lol, bit ironic eh?) and the G Power as my OBD2 reader and auxiliary gauges for my car
Apple and Motorola (and IBM) worked together back with the first Power Macintoshes, and even managed to make a Mac powerful enough to be classified as a supercomputer by the US Government (which resulted in the Power Mac G4 being banned from sale to certain countries), yet 6 years later they release a phone from last year with only 100 songs and crappy controls. Motorola, what the hell happened?
As someone that loves my PowerPC Macs, god I hate Motorola's phones. They still suck, I'm typing this on a Moto G Play right now that's weaker than an LG V20 from 6 years ago.
The division of Motorola that made the processors was spun-off into a separate company around the same time as the phone came out. You could pretty much make a documentary miniseries of Motorola’s downhill spiral.
In a video from fellow tech RU-vidr Snazzy Labs about the Rokr, he said that support for the phone on iTunes was dropped early on, while even the first iPod is still supported in iTunes on Mac Computers. (btw you two should definitely collaborate at some point)
When it comes to his junk automotive vlogs to tech reviews to humour... Those are the main reasons why I watch this channel... He's a real funny yet motivating guy who appreciates his fans. 🙏
I had the Motorola SLVR (pronounced "sliver") back in 06-07. It was the candy bar phone version of the RAZR. And I specifically bought it because it had iTunes on it. I could tell, way back in 2005, that at some point in time the folks from Cupertino were going to merge phones and iPods. I saw my fellow college students walk around campus with an iPod in one hand and a cell phone in the other. I still have that phone in a box in the basement... somewhere. If I find it I'll ship it to you Mr. Dank Pod.
I had one of these as a kid! It had amazing *stereo* loudspeakers and a really nice cable. The 100 track limit on iTunes was a bummer. I remember that with 100 tracks, it took a lot of time to launch iTunes, and I remember being annoyed that it was so easy to accidentally hit the music button and have to wait for it to load. I really wish you managed to play something over the loudspeakers! Mine came with a pretty fun soccer game and a The Sims-like life simulation, the latter was the first game I played that had this mechanic where it tracks the system time to advance the in-game time, which was a brand new concept at the time for this form factor. Really cool stuff! I actually stopped using it because I bought the iPod Nano, so I guess Motorola's CEO was right haha
I remember the SLVR had iTunes support as well. If I'm not mistaken, that was a L7. I had the L6 when I was growing up and my favorite game was Block Breaker Deluxe, good times.
11:49 that's why Steve Jobs basically shit on it at the keynote. The iPhone was well into it's development and he knew he was about to blow all phones out of the water.
This was the best music Phone I ever owned. This has true stereo speakers in it and if you layed it down on a Table this made sound even in the bass area. And you held it right in Front of your face it had a stereo wideness you couldnt get from even some hifi systems. I liked it a lot!
Funnily enough, the Razr you showed at the beginning is actually the Razr v3i, which also had iTunes (the i in v3i is for iTunes, if you couldn’t guess) and came out a couple of months after the Rokr.
literally had this phone as a 5 year old back in 2005, i remember it lagged all the time and after a year of usage the sim always would have problems loading up my network lmao, truly the worst phone i had lol
@@Ivannbeats because my family moved and wired phones weren't really popular anymore, no one used em basically so everyone in my family opted to have mobile phones, and so for some reason I got the phone, didn't even view at it as being an iTunes device, I doubt anyone used that in europe back then
The ROKR was a really good phone. I like how they connected the vibration motor to the audio to vibrate when playing music. Motorola also had a different model that does have this feature, I think it was the V220 I think
The fact that the preloaded game on there was a Worms knock off is actually mind boggling to me. That’s such a complicated game for just a phone from the early 2000s. I would’ve expected breakout or something
I was so jealous of my best friend's razr back in elementary school, that keyboard is absolutely ✨ aesthetic ✨, I liked it so much as a kid. Sadly, my parents got me a cheap Nec instead.
I believe the reason why it came out so terribly is because even though Motorola was a big company at the time and made amazing phones, they were going into unknown territory without having little to any experience prior to this. The idea to have music on a phone is genius, but not if it is a detriment to the phone software and hardware itself.
@@drewzero1 exactly. This product was over hyped but underworked. As it is shown in the video, it had major problems like how slow it was, how it would say "no sim" and how it would sometimes brick itself out of nowhere. There is a reason why the ipod nano smashed this thing, with the black spots and all.
the side kick is still one of the coolest phones i have ever seen . slider for keyboard and flip for two screens . or just that style when we still had physical keyboards. i would be down to hunt one if it was mildly capable anymore
