A Quantum crystal of frozen electrons-the Wigner crystal-is visualized for the first time.
Ali Yazdani is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Physics at Princeton University, Co-director, Princeton Quantum Initiative, and Director of the Princeton Center for Complex Materials, an NSF-funded center for materials research in science and engineering.
Yazdani is known for his research in advancing our understanding of emergent quantum phenomena by application and development of high-resolution microscopy techniques to directly visualize highly entangled quantum states of matter.

John, you've done it again. I never thought that I would live long enough to see, to perceive a real image of a Wigner crystal in the classical world. Great interview where by skillful questions you got your guest to elucidate the science in a way I understood. Also, I think a shout out to Ross is in order as the graphics were outstanding.

This may be one of the most fascinating subjects you've covered- to me, at least! Something I had no idea was even theorized. I also think Prof. Yazdani did a great job of explaining the phenomenon in a way I could visualize it and sort of grasp the concept easily. Also, why you need a perfect lattice of graphene to achieve something like this. I sort of thought of Earnshaw's theorem. Trying to stabilize point charges through... I guess just perfect geometry? I know it's not a great analogy, but just what my imagination went to first. Super cool research! I hope we get to hear more about their work in the future.

My understanding maybe im wrong, the electrons are not exactly frozen but trapped in the field and due to the single layer are actually "buzzing" moving only so far as the nearest electrons allow hence the lattice/crystal view. If the field drops the buzzing stops the crystal breaks am I correct? Maybe obvious not a physicist so forgive my ignorance.....

Yeah... i'm already convinced that this guy is first runner up for the next, Nobel Prize in his field (that is to say... among the civilized and humane/freedom-loving parts of this world, such as western Europe, North and South America, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Australia- basically all Pacific Rim nations)- and i predict that amateur physicists and college students around THAT globe will be rushing to the university library (or "googling from their semiconductor devices") to learn more about "what is a Wigner Crystal".o Glad now that i decided to give this guy the benefit of my doubt, while his voice captured my attention with his Asian-American-sounding accent, and sticking with his story added to my credulity- nulled the bias voltage (electrical force) on my Conspiracy to Dumb-Down American Schools While Stealing US Trade Secrets on Behalf of The CCP (tm) detector circuits- perhaps of value, obviously works/ed in the semiconductor industry, maybe South Korean or Japan-born accent? "Purely made of electrons"- Doubtful (like charges repel)- so they'd need some type of "positive" (electrons are negative) framework or some "positive field" to hold them in an equal distance while having opposite charge..., but i'm still listening.... oh, ok... a "2d lattice" but with some carbon atoms of graphene and it's positive core, nucleus, or molecule of graphene interspersed in a honeycomb "framework"- with it's protons or other cause of greater, electrostatic nobility (gravity) acting like mini-black holes, Farraday cages, or magnetic bottles (like microscopic, "Tokamak" reactors), keeping the electrons in relatively static locations, thereby forming a "crystal"... so i guess we're BOTH, technically-speaking, "correct", lol! Well, i just wanted to post here that i really enjoyed the video, and u ALWAYS have the most interesting and intelligent, as well as "intelligible" guests and experts on this channel. I appreciate u not ever blowing smoke up my a$$- like how "Scientific American Magazine" always featured articles on "science" that were dripping with technospeak and made-up-words, as long as it sounded science-ish, or sciencey (sigh in sea)- cryptic B.S. that ultimately confuses even the greatest scientists or professors from Beijing or Moscow, while wasting the free time of American Readers, any who want to learn some "real news" about the progress of modern science (in the free world). Unlike those misinformation operatives (jokers & talented, con artists) at Scientific American Magazine- this channel holds a high esteem in my regard. Best wishes for continued success and productivity for you, Jon. Sunsaver out.
