In 1973.74 and part of 1975 at International Harvester plant in East Moline Illinois. I was working in what was called the loony room assembling the first 1460 so that the engineers could figure out the best way to set up the assembly line for production. We put that machine together and then took it apart so many times I knew every bolt and nut by heart. The crew that worked in there had special badges that the security guards checked every time you came in or walked out of the room. Everyone had to sign a "No disclosure agreement" before we were even allowed to see the inside of the room. When we finished with the 1460 we then started with the 1440, then the 1480, the 1482 and finally the 1420. When I finished there I returned to the combine repair department, even then we were not allowed to tell anyone what we had been doing until the first machines started down the assembly line in 1976. When the entire crew that had been in the loony room went up on the assembly line to work with the assemblers on how to put it together. To make a long story short this is how I met my wife. She was one of the assemblers hanging the grain tank when we got acquainted.

Wow what a great history. Thank you for sharing. The 1460 is a land mark machine. A big difference from the 503 and 915.

@@bigtractorpower The first IH Combines I worked on were the 403/503 machines. Then I progressed to the entire 15 series machines as a combine repair specialists and finished up working on 2388's and Cotton Pickers when I retired. Then Case IH hired me back as a Pro Harvest specialist the first couple of years working on both combines and cotton pickers and then the next 23 years with Cotton division all over the world. My last time working on combines was at the Grand Island factory on 8020's about 15 years ago.

Those were probably the best machines ever built. I started out on an 815 combine and dad also had a 1420 axial flow. We used the axial flow only for corn the first 5 years till the 815 started to give us issues. I went and bought the electric sensors to run the head with the 1420 and man that machine did such a better job in beans that was the end of using the 815. For being the smallest machine in the case lineup, the rotor design really improved everything that machine was capable of. Seeing these machines really takes me back to a better time in the industry when things were so much simpler. I do remember my dad telling me that Minneapolis Moline actually sold the first rotary machine way back in the late 50's/ early 60's. When New Idea took over they were dropped from the lineup and they were all conventional combines. Once again another great video...///

You could farm with either and you’d do just fine. Combines are great, but the real money is made with planters. International was light years ahead. They had very good MFWD tractors all the way back in the 1970’s. I’m all green and yellow now, because if my head has to go spinning to figure our The Who, what where when and why with my equipment (AGCO), then I have no use for it. Major hat tip to the old IH stuff though. It was the best.

As a kid I grew up in the country and the farmers around me had an 83(?) 1460 they used exclusively for soybeans and I loved that thing. Actually, certain models of the classic 15 Series, stayed in production, through 1980! 1980-1981 saw the height of the Rotary Revolution! In 1980, Allis-Chalmers dropped their second largest conventional, and New Holland not only dropped their two [imported] conventionals, but also the trail blazing Model TR 70. Allis-Chalmers added a third rotary model, the huge N7 to their line, and New Holland introduced the TR 75, TR 85 and big TR 95. Also, in 1980, White broke a record with its huge Model 9700 rotary. Like New Holland, White was not a major player in the combine market. International Harvester dropped the beloved classic Model 715, hillside 453 and pull-type 914, in 1981 and debuted the smallest Axial-Flow, the Model 1420, along with the hillside 1470 and pull-type 1481. That left only two majors, behind the Rotary Revolution. Massey-Ferguson was already on the cusp of financial failure, while John Deere [financially stable], simply took the "If not broken, don't replace" stance, and it worked very well for them, too. Now, as per stated, I.H. did not lead the Rotary Revolution, but, as one of the Big Four in combines, certainly made history with their family of Axial-Flow combines! The Axial-Flow is one of four truly ground-breaking combines, that have shaped the modern world of combines!
@J-1410
@J-1410 4 года назад
Deere also took the "study the competition before they release it" route too.
@combinelover8988
@combinelover8988 4 года назад
@@J-1410, that, too. I just omitted some of the actual details, to keep from writing a "book," but in most products made by Deere, since the mid-1960's, it just seemed like Deere was not trying to be much of a innovator and trail blazer, yet, by just staying longer with the tried and true, while even learning from the mistakes and victories of their competition, Deere and Co. was able to stay ahead in the market. There's even more than that, but "tried and true," as well endless R&D, has made Deere a leader in its own rites, even if just not the first with a this or that product. One thing is for sure... Contrary to popular belief and myth, as well as endless jokes, John Deere NEVER "copied" the rotary design. Most farmers are not historians, period. If they were, then they'd realize that not only are Deere's [and others'] stories about rotary threshing and separation experiments, dating back to the late 1950's TRUE, but even before Deere had their very first combine [1927] or that New Holland even existed, rotary threshing was HERE! Yes, there were some stationary thresher-separators that were ROTARY, too. It's just that it takes more power to run a pair or even a single rotor, than the tangential cylinder. Bear in mind, until only 1970-1979, the 100+ Hp COMBINE, just did not exist!
@J-1410
@J-1410 4 года назад
@@combinelover8988 Baldwin Brothers ruin one part of that(US1949774A for example) they actually did build a SP version of that but it was unsuccessful as there wasn't an engine, in a reasonable size, that was powerful enough to run it. Otherwise I am one of those rare "farmer historians" and is the reason why I run what I run. I also find Deere overrated because of it, and wonder about their thinking sometimes(such as the "thank God AC is gone" letter which I have seen from a local dealer) Allis let the patents on Axial flow threshers run out as the transverse design was more efficient.(which is a reason why only one company(or two if you count the JV) put one into production) Also the first SP combine(29) was from one of their companies, and even then it was sold as simple, just like today. Allis experimented with them from the time when they bought Gleaner to the end, thus the largest combine(capacity) until the late 90s, still with the cleanest sample, which has been tested by multiple organizations(such as PAMI) Deere did buy and later admit that they bought and "took inspiration" from an IHC test combine in 1976(?) and I find it extremely odd that they were "Never Rotary" until the patents ran out. White could have went somewhere if they had dealers. Deere commented "Rotor is definitely big enough" Even Versatile was playing around with rotaries. Deere survived because they hibernated in the 80's, they didn't do much, rented out factory space and, in one way, took a pessimistic look at the future.
@combinelover8988
@combinelover8988 4 года назад
@@J-1410, that is all true. Again, I cannot write a book on here, but only highlight a few of history's finer moments. Yes, on the rotary Gleaner, from back in the early 50's, but as you said, just NOT enough engine Hp, thus reiterating a prior comment of mine, about rotors needing more power. think, it's not only to turn the drum, but to counter the gyro as well, as the combine will turn corners and even move in a line, opposite of initial travel. Deere NEVER said they "would never build a rotary..." They simply told the world, they would only build one when they felt they could perfect it, and also when they were ready to. The latter was dictated more by customer and market demand. I know professional custom harvesters, who used to run a mixed fleet, previously unheard of, before, in the CH community. The reason was for faster, more efficient harvesting [rotaries], while also catering to the farmers still either just skeptical of the rotaries, or simply wanting the spent straw for baling. This was the period of 1981-1995+.

I think the engineering of these great machines first began way back in the early to mid-60s. Shows just how way ahead of the other manufacturers IHC really were. A very sad day when the world lost this awesome firm.

I heard you mention your into diecast farm machinery, a publication ? I would like to get info if you can to get a magazine and or buy some pieces. Can you assist me ? Used to be several 1470 in york county ne. The IH dealer bought a bunch of them and removed the hillside eqiupment from the combines. Sold the stuff to other dealers in hillier ground.

@@farmallfan1466 The Rahco hillside undercarriage was the best on the market. We still run a 1982 1470 we did update to a 1010 header and hydro trim on the feeder house. It makes the header follow the slope changes very well. Plus we can operate the header trim going trough draws. There was a shop that purchased a 2166 and took the undercarriage off a 1470 and made a really nice machine. We still also have a John Deere 95H that uses the Rahco undercarriage. It was a big change going from 95H with no cab to a 1470.

Rotary screen not turning on one working beans in western KY, or is it a different design? Looks like not working right and getting plugged with dust.

Yeah i think Jason and Mike had said that dry conditions plus they had to terminate the crops early (late planted due to weather) to have it usable for the show.

Just a simple question do they always run slower when harvesting beans or is it just me?
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 4 года назад
Beans are a fragile crop. It is easy to shell the beans out of the pod with the header and knock them out on the field. That is why they run a little slower than corn and wheat.

lived in a small farm, we had the 1460, we had to put a reverser.. because shit happens especially with oats. it was good at combining... we had a guy with a john deer help one year, and every swath he combined, was a row of crop growing... it left out so much seed. the 1460 put money in your pocket, no money left on the ground

When the going got tough. The John deere outshone the rotary. In perfect conditions the rotary did a great job with less fuel. And less moving parts.

What type of conditions? I always found the 7720 and 1460 to be a good match. The 7720 is great for straw production and the 1460 stronger in corn.

@paulpence8895
@paulpence8895 4 года назад
That was a bit misleading - the differences were in the design of the concaves and the rasp bars used on the rotor, they were multipurpose machines. In the late 80's we (midwest soybean/corn/wheat farmer) started hybridizing them, using a rice rotor in the "corn" machine, it would handle green weeds (this was before roundup!!!) and tougher soybean cutting conditions...
