I’m from west Canada, where our First Nations tribes are Sioux, Blackfoot and Cree, which are ENORMOUS bands and peaceful. The only thing I know about the Iriqous or the Mohawk is what I saw in Last of the Mohicans, which is friggin awesome, but different from the original book. I LOVE learning about what REALLY happened.

The Iroquois, and other tribes of the area were forest Indian. They did not use horses. They went on foot, but could cover great distances. They were remarkably fit. The Iroquois were a martial society. Almost always at war. As a confederacy, they were united and powerful. They were sedentary. Their capital was Onondaga, where the eternal flame, started by Hiawatha burned. As long as that flame burned, the Iroquois would survive. There is a story about how it went out.

Didn't you hear that our Gov in cahoots with Canadian Gov have worked tirelessly to convince these peoples to relinquish the land, move to municipalities IN THE RETURN FOR discretion or some control over decisions within the industries that would take up the land, which, hopefully, would have helped lift these people out of the well documented terrible conditions they were living in? Don't you know that once the land was relinquished and said people living under government and municipalities, America would then send out the "White liberals" to protest and shut down the very industries the people were supposed to have control of to help them better their living conditions, and against formal protest, the white liberals would promise "other ways" or "other opportunities" for these people to lift their souls out of misery... NEVER TO COME TO FRUITION! Didn't you hear that it was, again, a sham? Sure, there are some things like control over some casinos that some first nations people have, but our corrupt government, which does nothing but invade and steal resources from poeple, is a plague, an out of control virus.. well, our gov allows that because.....they're using it as a means to transfer wealth. So, as I can see you were probably the teachers pet and sat up front in class so you could soak up all the education possible, it seems as if there are a few things you could still learn. I grew up in Ouaquaga NY, which in this time period would have been spelled Onaquaga, a central settlement destroyed by the Americans toward the end of the War of Independence. It is located along the Susquehanna river, in the southern part of the centrally located Oneida tribe, who were the Keepers of the Hearth and led by "Good" Peter Aqwrondougwas. In school of course we studied the Five, later Six nations of the Iroquois, their governing structure which inspired the structure of the US Congress, the excellent efforts of Chief Joseph Brant and Sir William Johnson, and the many missionaries who worked to bridge between European and First Nation peoples who were allies of the British. We also learned just how badly so many of those in command on the European and colonials' sides had behaved at that time. Discovering that they got a bit of their own back in 1812 was very satisfying. This documentary feels so much more acurate than "The Colonial Battle for North America" in this same "Timeline" series. But at the same time, adding the history of Western Canada is somewhat off-topic for a discussion of the Mohawk Alliance..

This was a good documentary--- I am glad more segments are being added about First Nations / American Indians. I would love to see a companion piece that also talks about the Iroquois to the south---the Cherokee---as a companion to this piece. They also allied with the British and the fighting continued in the southern Appalachians, long after the colonists won the US Revolutionary War. The Iroquois to the North and South inspired and mentored each other---even though they also had a history of fighting each other, long before colonists arrived. It was not uncommon for Mohawk, Seneca to marry Cherokee way back in history. This history is fascinating.

@morgainedepolloc4161
@morgainedepolloc4161 2 года назад
@@disgustedvet9528 very good point. Before colonist created more contention, there was much more intermarriage---it was not uncommon for those captured during raids to be brought into the clans and intermarry. Sometimes Algonquian would intermarry. Sometimes tribes further south, like the Muskogee/Yuchi---another separate language group --would intermarry with Cherokee as well. They did not perceive the "borders" we have today. But most of us with extensive lineage going back to the colonial period (and beyond) can trace some Seneca or other Great Lakes tribes in our genealogy. Cherokee were considered of Iroquois descent, and the language reflects that. In think we could all benefit from more history regarding First Nations/American Indians.

The cherokee are not Iroquois. They were bitter enemies. The Iroquois..not iraqwa..lived in new york mainly until conquering others and taking their lands. Half of them sided with the English and half sided with the Americans. Only Canadians think of Americans as colonists because Canadians continued licking the backside of the queen on their stamps.

Joseph Brant (aka Thayendanegea) was involved in a skirmish here in Indiana in 1781. George Rogers Clark was leading a campaign against British-held Detroit, making his way down the Ohio River, recruiting men, losing men via desertion, etc. Bringing up the rear to assist Clark were several Pennsylvania militia, mostly from Westmorland County, PA, led by Colonel Archibald Lochry. Well, Brant was leading a force of loyalist militia, and (non-Iroquois) Native American warriors, took advantage of the isolation of the second American armada, and ambushed it. The Pennsylvanians were taken completely unawares, and defeated, with many Americans dying in the fight. Even though Brant had given orders that non of the prisoners were to be harmed, some intemperate braves in his ranks tomahawked Lochry and 2 or 3 other American defenseless prisoners from behind as they sat on a log with their hands bound. It's one of several occasions here on the Indiana frontier when people (both Indians and whites) were summarily executed by tomahawk.

That’s very interesting! Thanks for sharing that. Here in Ontario is a town named “Brantford”. After the Revolutionary War, the British allowed him and his followers to settle wherever they chose in Southern Ontario. Brant chose the Grand River and ‘Brantford’ became his chief settlement, as it was at a shallow point along the river (A ford, in other words) and a good place for him and his people to stow their canoes. These ‘Grand River Mohawks’ would go on to play a great role in the War of 1812 as well. Gradually, they gave away and sold land as the years went on. They once owned the entirety of the Grand River on either bank.. but it was whittled down to the current ‘Six Nations Reserve 40’, which exists today. Despite it’s diminished size, it is still quite large! We also have another reserve here called ‘Tyendinaga’ which is just to the east of Belleville. It was chosen by another band of Mohawks who had fought for the British in the Rev. War and so were awarded land. They chose the site of Tyendinaga, because it was the apparent place from which the legendary Deganawida “Peace Maker” originally came from. Not sure how well you know the story, but it goes that some time in the past before Europeans arrived, the Wendat holy man (Deganawida) came over Lake Ontario from the northern shore, which was the Wendat homeland, with Tyendinaga, being the supposed place of his particular village. He united the Iroquois into the Five Nations Confederacy (later six).

He wasn't a chief. His name was Tyendinaga. After converting to Christianity he got his christian name, and because he converted under the Brits they gave him Brant most likely a popular family in the area where the people who converted him were from.

Though I really appreciate this I consider it close to my heritage... this is still the British side of the story.. where only big British or American names are referred to. I wish there was a big production like this where its told from the natives side with historical native figures being referred to

As a dutch american there is some shame in my heritage. I also believe all heritages have some shame. What is greater than the shame is the tragedy of what past Americans and recent canadians have done to the last of the lands of the first nations peoples. I firmly believe there are many stories (truths) that need to be told and the lessor names that defined the moments. From the perspective of the nations peoples. Journey well.

The Ancient Romans borrowed Venetian ship building technology. To create their own long range fleets in order to sail to North America to mine Copper & Tin. There are also tales of Ancient Romans encountering boulder throwing Red Headed Giants. Along a lot of the river banks they sailed by.

Disappointed with the lazy thumbnail choice as it's from Dances With Wolves, not Last of the Mohicans, which depicts the Mohawk/British alliance discussed here. Actor Wes Studi (at right) is in both. It's as if their graphics team just Googled "native Americans" and copied whatever they found into the background image. Do better guys!!!
