Johan, I'm so sorry about your father's death. Please accept my condolences. He must have been so proud of you, your family and your project. He will be watching you. Stay strong!
Sorry for your loss brother. I know Bernt Hammarlund will always be watching over you and your family as a proud father! As you follow your dream and build your boat remember to put a coin for him under the mast and use a nice mead to christen your boat. Thank you for allowing us to follow along on your journey and I wish you all the success in the world.
Sorry for your loss. Trust that you can find solace in the many warm and fond memories of Johan's father, as when he joined you on your boat on the canal trip across Sweden, when you docked close to his house and when he joined you on several overseas and tropical trips. Many golden moments... Great that you could be close to him during his last moments. The pain will wear off; the memories will remain shining bright! Looking forward seeing your project on the water in due course: making Bernt proud. Enjoy the experiences
My husband and I are so sorry for the loss of your father, Johan. That was such a beautiful tribute to him!!! Keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers, and sending an extra big hug from us in Virginia!!! 🙏❤️
I watched a cold molded hull being built on Nantucket Island. They used a pneumatic stapler over thin plastic squares to position and hold the strips in place while curing. They were easily removed with only two tiny holes remaining. The plastic squares prevented the head of the staples from marring the wood and provided a surface to pry out the staples without damaging the wood. Fast and cheap!
Wonderful video. Life changing when you lose a parent. My condolences. Now, don't be afraid to heat up the epoxy with hot water. Set the big containers in a big washtub and pour hot water into them to heat up the epoxy, It will pump much easier. Some folks build a heat box, but I found it easier to use a bucket for gallon sized containers. You have 5 gallon containers so you need a bucket large enough to hold that. Add more hot water, if it cools. Also, apply a heat gun to the wooden joints before applying the epoxy and it will help penetration. Put your pastry bags into a flower vase to hold them open and pour the thickened epoxy into the bag. Makes it a one person job. You can also pump epoxy resin alone into solo cups the day before and add the hardener when you need it. Love the scarf strength evaluation. Wish you tried a fairing evaluation. Forgive me if I sound bossy. You guys are making very smart decisions and the boat should be amazing.
I'm so very sorry to hear about the loss of your father, Johan. If life is like sailing across the seas, may your adventures be long, your waters calm, and your course steadfast. Blessings on you and your family.
In times of great sadness, look back and take comfort in all of the beautiful memories you made. Precious moments he spent with you, Malin and Vera, are more important than sailing. I am so sorry for the loss of your father. Hugs, prayers, and love for your family. 🤗
Another beautiful story well told. Very sorry to hear of the passing of your dad, Johan. A very hard time in a man's life. You have a wonderful family and a lot of friends.
I'm deeply saddened by you loss Johan. There are no words to ease such sorrow. 😢 Calm seas and fair winds from one seafaring son to another. Our Father's are the same age.
My sincere condolences on the loss of your father Johan, there’s nothing that can be said to take away the pain but our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. In regards the strip planking, my Huon Pine strip planked hull was vertically fastened when built in 1962 with stainless steel nails with no glass on the hull and during my current refit where I have had to repair some failed glue lines (from being dried out for @ 15 years) I could clearly see that the nails appear as good as new @60 years later. In my case the strip planks are 25mm square. (NB: I have repaired the failed glue lines with splines and have now glassed the outside of the hull for further longevity and ease of maintenance)
Another excellent video, but this one created with great dignity and love. Johan is a son to be proud of and Malin and Vera complete a family that we respect and admire like no other on RU-vid. Our condolences on your loss.
Sorry for you Fathers passing . Their joy wisdom goodness and love will forever be with you. You will see with Love they never really leave just another Angel looking out for you all. The conversation at first are strange but you’ll get use to it. You all are doing a great job Thanks again
Our heart felt prayers to your family, Bernt raised truly amazing kids. ❤️ He remains in your thoughts and heart every day. We love being a part of your year back on land, incredible successes and amazing progress on Ran III. With warm hearts of best wishes to you all.
Sorry to hear of your father's passing. My own father died a couple of years ago and he was the person who taught me so much about life and about sailing and his memory lives on in everything I do. RIP Bernt Hammarlund.
My condolences for the loss of Johans father. He must have been a very proud dad and grandad. Wish you all the strength you need in these times of grief. It's good to have your family close to you, in these difficult times.
Johan! We are really sorry about your loss! It really hurts and it sucks! You guys became a big part of our lives, almost like a distant family. Thank you for that! ❤
I’ve built wooden boats, in every case I used scarf joints. Never scrimp on materials when you and your family are offshore, alone, in a boat. Well done!
Dear Johan, Vi beklagar sorgen. You, your father and your family are in our thoughts and hearts. We can only imagine how proud he must have been of you growing such a beautiful family, and chasing your dreams with full dedication to every aspect, and using the knowledge and skills the he passed on to you in your pursuit. Med vänliga hälsningar, André
I am so sorry about your father's passing. Just from the little I saw on RU-vid, he seemed a fun loving, kind man who was involved whenever he could be. He will be missed. Am so glad that you all chose to spend that extra time supporting your folks.
My sincere condolences for the loss of your father, Johan. And of course to the whole family. It shows what kind of person he was, just by watching you and seeing that you are with him, during his final stage of life. Your ship will turn out great and to experience the build is really great.
Brent Hammarlund. 80 years of life to celebrate and keep warm memories close to your hearts. How very special he had the opportunity to see your vision and the action there-on. ✨✝️✨💕✨✅
So sorry to hear of your Father's passing. As everyone has said, he will have been immensely proud of his son and must have been delighted at how you are choosing to spend your life. As a grandfather myself, the gift of a grandchild that you and Malin gave him will have been such a delight as well. My condolences to you and your family and friends.
A beautiful tribute to your father Johan. Thanks for sharing and my deep heart felt condolences. Malin is correct. He is now free from pain and at rest.
I am glad you’ve had these 12 months nearby to make memories as well as memories made previously - I think of your dad singing. I’m sorry for your loss.
There are not ever will be words that really comfort when you lose your hero/teacher/mentor. But from all of us who have lost ours, either long ago or just a few years ago, maybe the best that can be said is “We know”. God bless and keep you all.
Sorry for your loss Johan. May your father RIP and remain close by you and your loved ones. Bernt would have been so proud of you as a son, husband, father and sailor. Take care.
Johan, so sorry for your loss. Consider using a finger joint router bit for your scarf joints. A little bit less waste and very quick with a router table. To hold the planks in place consider a series of buckets filled with brick or concrete. Each bucket has a 1 to 2 meter rope tied to the handle and the other end to a large hook. The hooks working end opening is squared off to wrap around the installed planks. On set of anchors can be placed inside the boat frame to pull down. Another set of anchors can be positioned near the frames vertical legs. A nail or screw is driven part way into the frame legs several meters off the ground. The anchor rope rises from the bucket wraps 90 degree around the nail and onto the hook. These hooks provide a horizontal force to pull the planks against the frame. The vertical and horizontal hooks have slight different shapes. I wish I could send you a sketch. I imagine them cut from scraps of plywood. If the buckets are hanging a few inches off the ground the clamping forces stay consistent. When you are adding a new plank, move the hooks to a resting nail driven it the frame structure. Add a new row of planks and reapply the hooks to the planks. I so enjoy watching you and your family.
You both have been an inspiration to me since you left Sweden on a dark and snowy night years ago. I am very sorry for the loss of your loved one. That is very hard. It would be an honor to be at the launch of your sailboat when it is finished. You all have many friends that you don’t know. Stay strong and never give up. I am forever impressed with your skills. Dr. Paul Nelson Master Captain Dallas, Texas
So very sorry to hear about the lose of your father. I have used West System epoxy for many years. Thickened epoxy doesn’t want to soak into the wood as much as raw epoxy. You could give your joints a quick brush of epoxy before adding the thickened to it. This will make a better bond.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Accept my condolences. He will be watching you from above during the process of your amazing project and if you are sailing the world he will be your guardian angel. Keep up the good work. Lots of love
Sorry for your loss. I'm sending you and your family my condolences. You're father has raised a great son and I believe he is proudly watching your fantastic project from where he is now 😊❤️
I'm behind on your vlogs .. just catching up now .. condolences on your families loss! The 1943 date hit me hard because that's the same year my dad was born .. he unfortunately passed at an early age back in 1997! I'm glad you got many more years with your dad .. that's always a blessing!
Send my condolences to your Johan, for the lost of your Dad, he did a great job raising you up to be a good man, who loves his wife and is competent in what he does. God bless!
My sincere condolences Johan and Malin. I wish you all strength whilst dealing with your loss and wish you can look back on many nice memories you have made together. Thank you for sharing it with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Try getting a thermostatically controlled heat pad on the bottom and build a foam insulation box. That'll keep the epoxy to a set temp which will reduce viscosity and improve curing consistency
I have built a number of fiberglass experimental airplanes and used a lot of epoxy. I used a ratio pump I put in a temp controlled chamber. The chamber was 2x2x2 feet square made from the aluminum skinned foam (used for insulation in house construction) I then installed a 60watt lightbulb controlled by a thermostat to set the temperature. The door was the same material with duck tape hinge. Worked perfect.
Great ideas. Re: scarfing….aren’t long scarfs stronger…why not do it now for peace of mind later…can bronze screws be that much more $? Not ranting, just wondering
Johan & Malin: May God rest the soul of Johan's father and keep him near you, always. Thank you for sharing your life with us. We have watched every episode from the start and didn't catch up to real time until two days ago, when you shared the sad news. I've learned so much about sailing, cruising and maintainence from you both. Again, thank you and may God bless you for all the days of your life. PS - Vera is the absolute star of this show now. We can envision Ran III being in your around for her children, and even her grandchiildren to enjoy someday.
Sorry for the loss of your father. I hope you were able to be with him at then end. It is a tremendous privilege to be with a loved one at the end, providing love and support. It is not easy, but it is so worth while.
So sorry for your loss, my condolences. May y’all be blessed with strength and courage to move forward. But never forgetting the wonderful, glorious memories of your loved one.
I’m sorry about the loss of your father. I also want to say that we are enjoying your project. I think you are doing excellent workmanship. I have personally built cedar strip kayaks, canoe and dozens of hollow cedar strip surfboards, so I am particularly fond of this process. Keep up the good videos!
My condolences on your loss. Your decision to spend these last months in Sweden was huge and proper. May I suggest a heat box for your epoxy? Either build an insulated box or use a small chest freezer. We picked one up for isolation supplies when Covid started and it is now keeping my epoxy warm with the help of a heat lamp and a thermostatic control, total additional cost was around $40. Search for terrarium supplies. Considering the number of scarfs you will be cutting, I would set up a jig with a circular saw on a track to cut them efficiently. I used my track saw in that way to cut 12:1 scarfs for a cap rail and it worked like a charm. Just like your hand cut set up but much faster. As always, thank you for sharing your build with us.
I love how Johan takes his time explaining everything thing. This really feels like a real how to video. Which I like and at his pace you can really take notes.
Please accept my deepest condolences. Johan, is your father was an inspiration to you. and the love within your family was there to be witnessed. he would have been proud of the man you are. The touching tribute you paid to him, brought a tear from my eyes and rest in peace Brent You are all in my thoughts. God bless xxx
Sincere condolences on loss of your dad. It is very hard but with time it will feel a lot less painful. Lots of love and admiration to you both from Cape Town. ❤🇿🇦
I am glad you spent time with your father. So important to keep family in your life. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the waves splashing you as you cruise the ocean blue.
Although the pain of losing a father may never fully go away, with time and support, you can learn to live with the loss and cherish the memories of the time you shared together.
It's always fun to see how your head works and how you work through these problems for each video. As a fellow cabinet maker and shade tree engineer (lol), I wouldn't be concerned at all about the shear strength of a butt joint because as you said in the beginning, no two joints will line up. What I would be concerned with is thermal expansion and contraction. One way to eliminate the need for scarf joints completely would be to layup the planks on a 45 deg angle from the keel to the sheer.
So sorry for the loss of your father Johan. Condolences to you and your family. May he fill your sails with clean air and be with you when you set sail on your new boat. The planking taking shape is exciting to finally see.
Oh guys we are so sorry to hear about Johans Dad. Bernt must have been so proud of you three. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all and especially Johan and his Mum.
Beklagar Johan, Du ger ett så lugnt och sansat intryck! Hoppas du får tid att sörja! Imponerad av erat driv och hantverkarskap... om det nu är ett ord! Love!
