That possession scene and the one scene in the dark room scared the shit out of me. The last 20 minutes made me really uncomfortable, hard to watch, but terrifying. 9/10
Me to @melveesings. The possession scene was incredibly good. I wasn't terrified but I did feel uneasy. I saw The Omen in the movie theaters when it first came out. This was a really good movie that is in keeping with the others.
I am a Catholic. The term Jeremy is looking for is novitiate or postulant. Both terms refer to different stages of formation in which an aspirant to consecrated life goes through in order to become a nun.
I believe in Jesus myself. I'm questioning if I should even be watching these types of movies? But at the very least, I'll watch Jeremy's review. Do you have any movie suggestions that don't necessarily have to be about Jesus or religion. But preferably comedies or other types of movies or shows that are ok to watch or won't feel guilty watching?
@@mikebell2162 Most horror movies, specifically ones dealing with religious institutions and exorcisms are sacrilegious. So I wouldn't recommend watching much of that genre. I think a comedy that features religious life, but is not antithetical to religious values, is Nacho Libre. The TV series, the Chosen, is one of the best dramatizations of the Gospels. The Lord of The Rings trilogy is not about religion, but contains religious allegories that are congruent with Christian teaching. A good channel to watch for recommendations is Upon Friar Reviews. It features two Franciscan priests who review movies and they speak about how certain secular oriented films which support Christian virtue and how certain films glorify values that are opposed to Christian reaching.
@@mikebell2162As someone who was previously religious, Id suggest not limiting yourself with film. They are all different. Have different messages, tones, themes, etc. Movies like this one in particular are pointing out the fallibility of man and his perversion of religion, albeit in an extreme way. If you want another person's opinion on religion and movies check out Chris stuckmanns story about leaving the Jehovah's witnesses.
@@Tool30301 Pandorum. I was trying to look up reviews on it when it came out and stumbled across Jeremy. :). Twilight? Wow that is quite a bit ago :) what’s your favorite review from him? Mine is Sinister, he convinced me it was not just a simple horror film.
@@Pewpewpew182 Lol asking me to pick a favorite child would be easier, but right now I'd say Mortal Kombat Annihilation, it's a very funny review with a really good point about how MK was a trailblazer when it came to lore in fighting games.
Richard Donner directed the original version that starred Gregory Peck back in the mid 1970’s - and I think it still stands up today (except perhaps ‘that’ scene). Trainee nuns are called novitiates.
I actually thought this wasn't going to be as good of a horror movie seeing what's came before and the commercials but damn if this is enough to blow Jeremy's mind then I need to see this movie now.
This movie is legitimately great. I would recommend having the original lined up to watch very soon after. This one is a great prequel and companion piece.
@@onethousandlostsoulsIs it anti-religious in any regard? If so, by how much? Without spoilers maybe? I would really appreciate it SO MUCH i might see it with my mom and grandma and their christians
@@creatorcomedy1450 not at all . If you seen any of the tv spots , the priest says “ there’s churches that pray to god and there’s others that pray to something else “ also the main character does say that she was treated badly by the nuns but I don’t consider that “anti religious” . It explains why .
I wasn’t planning on watching this because I’m so sick of cheap prequels and I love The Omen, but your review actually convinced me to give it a go. Thank you for that.
Hold on the mother of Damien? then what about the scene in original Omen film where the ambassador and the photographer are in the graveyard and discover the remains of the real baby of the ambassador and the remains of the jackal (Damien's mother) ? so is it a prequel or a reboot???
The jackal is the father instead. I wouldn't say it's too drastic of a retcon, and it makes the prequel a better film. Women generally make for better horror protagonists, for obvious reasons
The Servant, right.. still have to check on the two latest seasons, totally forgot about it- yet it was pretty good. Always the same thing with these Apple Shows, it's really weird. Good, or so it feels at the moment, yet so utterly forgettable ultimately...
(maybe it has to do with the time between seasons always increasing, and the sheer number of new quality shows to check.. really not sure. Then covid and the strike..)
Hey Jeremy, great review! I agree with all your points. I saw the film last night and even still today, I can’t believe some of the graphic imagery I saw on the screen. I NEVER thought I would see anything like that in a studio film, let alone one from Disney! This film is so dark, unnerving and unwholesome, that the best compliment I can give it is that it feels like Satan himself was a technical advisor on it. I also can’t believe this is Arkasha Stevenson’s feature-film debut (she also co-wrote the screenplay). She knocks it out of the stratosphere on this one. Not only is the movie set in 1971 it feels like it was shot in 1971. The cinematography, editing style and sound design all feel like lo-fi throwbacks to the 70s, in the best possible way. Yet it never feels dated and greatly respects Richard Donner’s film. I can’t recommend this movie enough ... if you can handle it!
You are cool, Jeremy.... Once I discovered you, I binged all the previous videos.... I liked it, very much... You are very good at voice modulations... Talk speed, you don't waste the viewers time for a single second... Tight editing even from the start... Most of the time hit point about the movies... You entertained(ing) us... For so long... Thanks for that... ( That moustache on the finger looked real on you... )
Late Night with the Devil has to be my favorite horror film of 2024 so far. I too am surprised The First Omen got pretty good reviews. Maybe i'll check it out.
@@Near2L It's doing pretty well for an IFC film though, better than expected so I'm happy about that. It had a much eerier tone throughout than The First Omen.
Jeremy, damn. Great review! I really shouldn't have watched this review yet. I am become the very thing that I abhor ... but dayyyy-yaaam! I blame your thumbnail. It hooked me and turned me into a mere number in your RU-vid stats! 🖤 Thanks, man. 😉
I think 1976’s The Omen is great. Rewatching it a couple months ago, it still holds up quite well. With this movie, I think I’ll wait until it hits streaming. I’m already seeing a lot of movies in theaters this month, which means one I’m not as looking forward to has to wait for a couple of months. After this review though, this movie has more of my attention.
Bro, I wanna know if this was true for anyone else cause I watched the omen a few Halloweens back with my aunt, and that shit was a laugh riot. All of the "scary" scenes just landed with perfect comedic timing for me. It just felt so dated. I've wondered over the years if I was missing something since it's supposed to be this horror classic, but idk.
@@19bones99 nah you didn't miss anything horror is very subjective kinda like comedy. I find a lot of scary movies funny but a lot of other movies people don't find scary I find terrifying.
I am going to see the movie this afternoon. I was nervous about it, but look forward to it now. I have a fairly demanding time schedule, and this was the only showing that fit perfectly.
I only listen to you Jeremy. The Omen has been my favourite movie for 44 years, since I saw it 1980 aged 12. I was in two minds about seeing this movie. Now you said it's worth a look-see, I'll go-see. Thanks bro...
Well @JeremyJahns, Since you mentioned it! Theres a process to one entering religious life for nuns. The first steps include becoming a Postulant or Novice. Then as the time goes on they take vows of commitment for a certain amount of time till eventually they take their final vows. Each religious order has its differences but thats the general rule.
@@EJD339 The original movie did make kind of a big deal about that reveal so it's kind of the canon itself that made that detail so relevant. It would be funny if they included a scene that handwaves that away with it being some kind of devilish trick. "Wow, you actually believed the jackal story? Damn, you humans are gullible. It's just a prank, bro."
@@ashleybrooke2087Hmm, you're right. It's like if they're going to believe in that then vampires, werewolves, ghost, zombies, evil leprechauns, etc... and all of the other sorts of make-believe horror stories are gullible to be believed as well. But again, it kinda does take away a bit of lore of the original franchise...
This movie completely caught me off guard, I haven't been actually scared from a movie in a while. And, man is this movie beautiful. If there was ever a horror movie that derves an Oscar, it should be this one. Cinematography, soundtrack, and acting was superb! To know this was the directors debut is crazy, props to everyone who worked on this!
The Omen is one of my favorite horror films of all time. And I gotta be honest I had low expectations for this movie when I first saw the trailer. But after watching your review I’m gonna have to take your word for it and I will go check it out when I get the chance.
@@mooseyman74 Well Damien was a abomination mixture of Satan and a animal .....watch the original 1976 movie it explains all the mythology .Also The 1979 sequel Damien the omen part two .
Hmm, a rare horror movie actually being good? Wow! Also, I respect Jeremy for pointing out the film score (the orchestrated music). This gives me hope.
This last decade has been a tremendous uptick for the horror genre. The 1990s/2000s were extremely rough. We are getting original ideas and somewhat decent sequels.
@Outpost31Research totally agree but there's always many people out there thats too skeptical about horror movie?😂 i mean come on,give it a chance dont be too negative lol
Wow. Thanks. I was going to skip this, but now probably will not. This review definitely made me want to go see it. Too many prequel’s and sequels of classic films, not to mention remakes have just been cash grabs and disappointments. This does not sound like that.
I *didn't* know anything about that movie going in. Didnt even know its a prequel. And MAN. At the ending i was like "I CAN'T WAIT FOR A SEQUEL DAMN" ... well i guess I'm in for a treat. Bought the trilogy on Amazon 2 hours ago
I just came to see if anyone else wasn't thinking that the possession scene in the third act wasn't a masterpiece, well Jeremy you nailed it great review by the way.
I'm sure it's been said here already, but that great scene you mentioned is a call back to 1981's Possession. It was great here, but you should see the original. It's mind blowing.
I don't know what you're saying. Are you saying that you stayed awake until 6am waiting for this review... because that's dumb. Or are you saying that this 5 minute video was so long that by the time it finished, it was 6am, and thus too late to go to bed now? What are you saying? I can't go to sleep until I find out.
The hand coming out of the vagina was unnecessary. It also suffers the same curse that all prequels suffer: we all know Damian is born and doesn’t die h til he fights Jesus in omen 3 as an adult. There were no stakes
Saw this at the first showing at my local cinema. Really enjoyed it - the tension definitely mounts throughout. Much much better than Immaculate too (which I saw earlier this week!)
@@casthedemon its an absolute classic. The first Omen definitely seems like it could work for people who haven’t seen the first movie but i highly recommend seeing the original.
@@sunside7 I was trying to figure out a good name for the face he makes during the jump scare, started picturing The Grudge, and as soon as I realized just how perfectly his surname of "Jahns" matches up with "Ju-On," I took it and ran! Glad it's being appreciated. 😎😊
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose Oh it was a stroke of genius 😂 Also, thanks for the time stamp for the 2nd jump scare, would have missed it for sure otherwise! I wonder how many other Easter eggs in Jeremy's videos I might have missed. Has this pulled this stuff before?
@@sunside7 Hee hee, thanks. And you're welcome; I wasn't aware of it myself until I read another comment because I stopped the video after Jeremy finished talking, but once I went back and checked, figured I'd add that one too. I'm aware of at least one other video where he made a point about jump-scares by reenacting them, and I do think he may have included one at the very end, but I'd have go back to it and look.
Practical effects and no jump scares are whats missing in todays horror movies. The more they add those two elements in this generation horror movies they waaayyy better!
The attempt at Isabelle Adjani performance in possession was very interesting. Definitely a huge inspiration in this film. The actress did an incredible job
Knowing that its a prequel to a movie that's 48 years old at this point with tagline in the poster confidently saying that it is "the most terrifying movie of the year", it's honestly quite shocking that it has been getting a strong positive buzz, but hey good for them 😂
76 Omen is the best Final Destination film ever and still has perhaps the greatest soundtrack ever, so I’m glad this prequel doesn’t suck I thought Damien’s mother was a donkey, though 😂
Glad you enjoyed it. For me. Evil Dead Rise is the best horror movie of the 2020s. Sure that movie came out back in 2023 but my parents and I really love that movie. Heck it's my all time favorite and I gave it a 10 outta 10. The reason why is because the whole movie is incredibly memorable from the opening, to the cast, the sound design, the makeup/practical effects, the music, and the acting was all great. Plus. I'm very excited for the upcoming sequel. It will start filming near the end of this year and will be releasing to the public next year in October 31st (perfect timing) 2025 and they said that the actresses that played Beth and Cassie will make a return.
Not a fan of retconning Damien's birth. The twist with his birth sets up a possible parallel sequel to run alongside the original films. They also made Father Brennan a heroic character when it is clearly shown in the original film that he is marked with the number 666... suggesting he was a part of the conspiracy and was seeking redemption...
