So my A7Cii finally turned up and it's possible to bake in the aspect markers into the JPEGs in-camera by going into the playback menu and selecting 'crop'. Once in the crop setting you select 'follow aspect marker' and it will generate a new jpeg with the 2.35:1 crop applied (this crop menu also allows you to select other aspect ratios in here and scale the crop larger/smaller).

These aspect markers need to be on my A7R V. It's annoying as hell that I already have a feature that I don't have in a cheaper body. BTW the Xpan saw in 65:24 or 2.7:1 aspect. The only camera that can do this that isn't medium format is Lumix's full frame cameras. It's a game changer if you ask me. If only Lumix had a 16-35 2.8 and not just an f/4

Annoying SONY can’t bring this simple feature to the A7IV. We at least get the markers in video mode for 2.35:1, but that’s it. I’d almost upgrade to the A7V when it comes out, just for this feature (assuming it’s present).

Thanks for this! Very useful. It even drew my attention to having guide lines for 2.35:1 on video mode too - but how odd that you can only 'black out' the margins on photos, and not on video where it surely makes even more sense..? I hope they add an update that sorts this discrepancy.

this is exactly why I used to shoot 16:9 on my old Sony NEX C-3. While I realize thats not the same thing, it allowed for a restriction in composition enough for me to use my eyes and crop in post if I had to.

Neat! It's kind of silly that a better variety of aspect ratio's isn't available in more camera's. I don't need a 12th film sim in my Fuji, but 65*24 (like the tx-1), 2.35:1, 1:1, 4:5 would be so great to have and it can't be that much work to add it. Seems like the most simple feature to implement but it would be appreciated immensely.

The only problem with Sony A7C II is the limitations of its mechanical shutter… I shoot mainly portraits with bokeh so it’s a big no no for me

A7cii does not support type A memory cards. But the All-i bit rate 600mb.. V90 card only 300 mbps. which card is best for A7cii ? I am little bit confused about a7iv or a7cii. Basically, I am a wedding photographer. I need both photography and cinematography. And want to shoot slog 3 600mbps bit rate.

In Lightroom classic you can crop it and save it as a present and import the photos with that preset.

If you have photoshop or even Gimp you should be able to batch edit the photos by setting up a custom action that crops off the top

The guy mentioned in the video who shoot Fuji film on Sony, I checked out his videos and they are mainly for shooting videos and you still have to post color grade them. Also early in this video, the pictures taking with the a7cii, are they post color graded? I misunderstood that if you should JPEG and they look like that out of the camera, you don’t need to edit them in post?

This is definitely a really nice feature. For those who don't have the option it is worth investigating the older way of doing it. I have an RX100m6 and an A7Riii and both have aspect ratio settings that I use all the time. The RX has 1:1, 16:9, 4:3. The A7Riii only has 16:9 for some reason. Both only affect the JPG. The raws remain as they are.

I really wish my a7R3 can do this. It has aspect markers but only for video. In the mode a7R3 cannot take any stills. I love shooting in panoramic aspect ratios and being able to compose in panoramic aspect ratios is very important. My workaround is taping a piece of black plastic with a cutout to the rear LCD. This doesn't work with the viewfinder or playback.

Hey guys: you can crop in post with such newfangled software such as Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. For the next photography lesson: JPG are a compressed format which sucks unless you are shooting a sports event with an SD card runner and under 1hr publishing time deadline the more you know!

How would you compare Veres Deni Alex's film simulations for Sony to those found in the Fujifilm X100V? I currently have the X100V and 2 Sony cameras, but am wondering if I could get away with selling the X100V for his film simulations... Please let me know your thoughts!

I'm excited, but at the same time confused. Aspect ration thing is something i could do with my Lumix S1 and now even better with my Lumix S5II and going even further i can upload my own luts for photography so no need for my fuji simulations. Sad days for Sony and Fuji.

I used the gaffer tape method on my A6600 and unfortunately it makes it hard to see the shutter and aperture times, but if you were desperate you could look through view finder. Really starting to fancy that A7C ii

Question for you Chris! I’m having an issue with my A7cii and raw photos sending to my phone, for some reason they are grayed or blacked out and I can’t see them. But I can only see jpegs, I figured I would ask you if you know how to fix that seeing as how you’re a Sony guy! Thanks man

Been shooting like this for a long time! That's cool the camera has the border you can turn on. The CR also can shoot reasonably sized apsc crop mode shots too, seems like a good street camera!

Which film simulations were you using for those photos? They look great. I'd love to see you do a deeper dive into the ones you've experimented with and enjoyed the most, and also how you handle the specific white balances (do you store the white balance color shifts into memory recalls?)

This is similar to what I've been doing on the Fuji GFX system that has the different aspect ratios (65:24 was widest you could go). This is cool they added it to their new cameras. I'm assuming they won't add this in any firmware updates tho and I'll have to wait for the A7RVI.
