Nathan is a great addition to the team. He seems to be an awesome mechanic. The lights look great on the truck also. I would suggest putting something to keep water out of the exhaust stacks

Chad When you down shift, you need the double clutch and bring up your rpm’s to the driveshaft speed.

Chad needs to know, on the old transmissions that were not synchronized, you engaged the clutch to shift, and at the same time pushed the gas pedal down to increase the RPMs of the engine, and at the same time changed gears. Down shift was the same way. When the engine and transmission were matched, it was smooth sailing. In fact, truck drivers could actually shift the gears without using the clutch, by shifting while the engine was at speed. We learned to drive when all standards were like the one he is driving.

Rev the engine up to match the speed of the engine to the gear in the gear box when you change down gears.

Chad you might be able to ride the next gear with the shifter (sounds like a lite grind) and play the throttle until you speed match the motor to the gear you're trying to get it into. It will fall right in. There's a learning curve to shifting like that but once you master it you'll never wear out a clutch again. I transport trucks and drive every one of them that way. I only use the clutch when starting or stopping. Good luck and don't get frustrated if you should try it this way.

When you are down shifting give it some gas so the rpms increase and then downshift. Then lift your foot from the gas slow it down. You can use the brakes once you downshift if necessary.

Try bring the revs up when double clutching when you go to neutral bring the revs up some and then go for the gear you want. Also make sure you have a 1/4 inch clearance in the clutch adjustment rod. All long type clutches should have a little slop in it.

That can be done with only using the clutch to take off. A slight Rev in neutral betwixt the shift and the Trans will almost "suck" itself in to the next gear.

I think if you lighten up on the shifter and don't try to force it in gear there is a sweet spot you can feel when the gears synchronize and the gears mesh practically by themselves.

I love that truck reminds me of something Evel Knievel would have.

Seems to run really well. You may want some insulation in the cab.

Try floating those gears, clutch for reverse and first Then feel your way through, bring the rpm up a little when down shifting.

here is a tip when double clutching a rig like that.raise engine rpm slightly when shifting and double clutching

CHAD glad I caught this video. Was gonna head up to winterport and bring the 3rd row seats for my past 04 Tahoe. And give to u and Jolene since vehicle is long gone. As I said came out of the Tahoe day I bought in o4 and have been in storage in basement since. So brand new out of 04 in 04, Tan leather. They would work perfect in the project ur workin on for towing Bugatti. So need to figure another way to get to the to you . Hope u touch base soon these. I live just north of Boston. Try pressing the clutch pedal all thee way down to engage the clutch before putting the truck into another gear. It might help. If it doesn’t help, the clutch needs adjusting.

You need to double clutch but you also need to give it some light revs just before you go into gear to match the box to your speed.

Rev the engine in the middle of the double clutch. The secret is match the speed of the engine to the speed of the transmission

If you take two more seconds to shift it will go in smooth as well

If you work out the revs to equal the speed you are going at for the gear you are in then you change gear. My dad taught me that one. He had a series one LandRover that he could change up and back down through the gears without using the clutch.

There will be other races. Good to see this truck on the road.

The race rig looks tight and right. Queen Jolene's Traveling Stunt Show. If you let the RPM match up to the transmission and the speed you won't need to double clutch. A pro can shift without the clutch and without grinding. Now, I want to see you split shift with the rear end. :) Didn't you say this Ford has a two speed rear? Rarely need it with that load but you'll get to shift twice as much. 😂 Yep, batten down the hatches, might get sporty if the wind hits. Looked like all the models pointed at you.

The F1 was my very first truck thanks for the vid memories .Changing the gears is only practice practice practice.

Chad, a big part of driving a non-synchronized trans is to give it some gas in neutral with the clutch out before you hit the clutch a second time and move the stick. When you get it right there is no grinding!

Not to sure about that chemical being used yesterday BIT DANGEROUS to say the least .

Whichever dog crapped in the transmission cap has expert aim.

Yarmouth's supposed to take pretty much a direct hit.

Hey Chad, when changing gears on an old box like that, when you double the clutch, give the throttle a little pump as well while the clutch is in, it matches the speeds of the shafts in the gearbox and it will slide into gear without a crunch... This is also the trick to driving without the clutch like many truck drivers do...

The storm coming at you there is the same storm keeping us off the beach here in Florida, i live about 40 miles from the beach.

Remember first is Granny low you can't shift down into low you have to be at a complete stop to put it in first gear.

Mother in law had 50 mile one way trips to make for hospital every day many years ago, texaco station servicing her Datsun 710 drained fluids, and left her trans dry, stated making bad noises 2 days later, I flushed the trans twice with oil and solvent, refilled it witht anti foaming noise suppressant 80-90 wt oil used in twin shaft 10 speed transmissions for large trucks added a small amout of Justice Brothers gear box additive , the trans ran verry cool and quieted right down , it did fine for 6 more years ti'll car was sold. Same great experience with a 69 GT6 Triumpth trans it went from running extremely hot to the touch on the shifter to near body temp no matter how hard it was run. Great results may be had in any gear box, rear end I had been tuned onto the use of oil additives through a machinist that had gone race enthusiast in racin MG midget on the track, he could not afford the dry sump remote oil cooling that all others were using, started experimenting and found the JUSTICE BROTHERS product and was completely sold on it use. That noisy trans of yours would possibly just love you for any kind of relief, being nice to those old tired trucks isn't a waste of time and money, they gave all they had for many years, a little treat for them here and there is an aknolegement of what they mean to us yet and a thank you for their continued service

Don't push the clutch all the way to the floor. Just hit the friction point.

I don't think it is but try dry shifting if it's syncromech. Upshiftings fine just let off n shift it'll drop when the two get in sync. Slight pressure don't force it or you'll be grinding anyways. Down shifting hit neutral step on the gas revit out a bit n let of let idle drop if it's syncromech it'll slip in when they become 1,2,1 with another. Bit it probably isn't to it's age. ( save gears, o,p bearings,clutches, extra bs. Ect. Just a tip, suggestion.

A bing thing shifting the old truck you don't want to down shift it and when you are taking off you want to shift it into gear slow but smooth that will help from grinding

You are starting the truck in low first, you don't need to do that. Under normal circumstances you would start out in low, over left and down, then double clutch on both up shifts. You only use the extra low to go through a ditch or some situation that requires low speed high torque. I know, I grew up on a farm in Oak Bank Manitoba. Keep up the good work !

Truck seems to be running just fine.

You'll get the hang of shifting the old truck. It's just a matter of finesse and matching engine speed with the correct gear , whether going up or down and not trying to rush the shift. Been watching quite a while now, and get something out of every video. Thanks for doing "outside the box" think for yourself material. Al in Toledo.
