This is the first test of a trumpet that I made for The Rajesh Mehta (Orka-M) here in Singapore. He used to play the Holton MF Firebird valve slide trumpet, but found that it just "was'nt him." We chatted, I drew little pictures, and several months later... this is the trumpet I made. It has top action rotary valves, a slide, and short bell section, and a red hot leadpipe that makes this as easy to play as a regular trumpet.
I hope you like it. Please, I post these videos for my family and friends. If you want to comment, please be positive.

Trey, it is basically a Firebird, however, it is balanced, and easier to play, especially using the left hand on the slide. It is an homage to Maynard.

jeffers133: it is a Bb trumpet. The slide all the way in (like playing a trumpet without valves) it's fundemental note is: Concert Bb

A=440hz but as they are custom made to order, A= anything the customer wants. The trumpet's fundamental is Bb, so the best tuning is in the Bb tuning, by extending the slide, and using the valves in combination.... the accuracy deteriorates, as the valve slides are calculated for the length of a Bb trumpet

Then it would really rock out! making a valve/slide trumpet the thing that really gets in the way, is of course, the slides at the valves.

What if you found the right ratio and used gears or something to lengthen each valve slide proportionally to the main slide so that the valves would be in tune monster what position the slide was in?

Actually the leadpipe is 140mm.... just like the original firebird, but you don't see that one as much. Really the only way to lengthen the slide is to put the valves after the slide, keeps the leapdipe in the slide, and then shorten the bell section a little. A trumpet is only a certain length, and the more stuff you want on it, you have to move it around. I think... without a telescoping slide, you will only get 6.5 positions at best but I am working on one so we shall see. Stay Tuned ;-)

Well, I am not sure why Maynard Ferguson asked Holton for the "Firebird" (the original valve slide trumpet) But I have always thought there was a different way to do it. The guy in the video asked me to make a trumpet for this kind of music. But, stay tuned, I will try and work out a video of someone playing something else with it.

Nice instrument. I would like to have one my self. I wonder how it would sound if you longer the slide and build a short leadpipe? That way you would be able to play more trombone lines as well I suppose? Anyway nice work!

Okay, it works for Indian music. I 'd like to hear songs that American pop singers sing. Many songs that are sung do not come over well on percussive instruments like trumpet, but work better on guitar (also percussive) because of the electronic feature of bending notes like a singer. So, has anyone tested on video this wonderful slide trumpet on singer's songs?

With the slide and the valves combined, maybe down to pedal C, the top end is however high you can play. It is a four position slide. Send me an email, or check out Schlub Brass Works on facebook for more info

And shorten the slide... don't want to take it all out of the bell.
