In this video:
“No woman can run the Boston Marathon,” said Arnie Briggs, Kathrine Switzer’s running coach. This coming from a man who had been excited to see a woman start running with the all-male cross country team at Syracuse University. He insisted that women were too fragile to run for 26 miles, though he conceded that if Switzer could do a 26-mile practice run, he’d take her to Boston.

This only shows how stupid those organizers are when they disqualified her despite having no specific rules barring women's participation in the said marathon.

Hey, watch that "way back then"! I had already graduated from college when that race was run. "Way back then", indeed. (Snort) I know a lot about sexual discrimination. I graduated with a degree in mathematics, and applied to multiple insurance companies for a job as a statistician, and all they wanted to know was whether I could type and take shorthand.

That's a long time ago. It's unfortunate that SJWs take their man-hating practices too far(Anywhere outside of tumblr) though. If they would just stick with women earning the same as men and such, I'm fine with that. As a guy I do strafe for equal rights among genders. I just personally think creating transgender toilets just for them goes too far.

theawecabinet thanks for the essay. You seem pretty self-assured so I don't see any point in providing my own personal thoughts on the issue. As far as the whole SJW issue goes I think all the turmoil is beyond petty. The majority of googles work forces is white males so I see no problem in promoting a more diverse environment as it's been shown to benefit companies in the long run. There will always be people who take things too personally and get easily offended by the littlest things. It's just the realty of the very open society we live in. Focusing on these people and making a big deal over their overly sensitive reactions only gives them more power and attention. People are only giving them validation.
@theawecabinet
@theawecabinet 6 лет назад
"...thanks for the essay. You seem pretty self-assured...." Quite the opposite in fact. I understand the idea of women NOT being weak and pathetic victims is a revolutionary concept for most people, and most people react with very strong (negative) emotions to the idea that women are equal to men. Often they direct those emotions in the form of hatred and vitriol (not you though thankfully!) So the point is.... I have to be very careful to present a coherent case based on reason and evidence. Anybody can say "Women are objects controlled by men!!!!" and nobody demands any more explanation. But to propose that women are NOT objects mean you will always be treated like a mad person. "... I don't see any point in providing my own personal thoughts on the issue...." Well that's jolly convenient then. ".... As far as the whole SJW issue goes I think all the turmoil is beyond petty..." Getting fired from you job or being threatened with jail is the opposite of petty. "... The majority of googles work forces is white males...." I would put money on google hiring more Asians than is representative of the population as a whole, and men tend to be concentrated in the more techy side of the company. This is because (on average) men tend to be more attracted to those kinds of jobs. Just out of interest, have you ever called for more women to be pushed into careers like roofing, plumbing, truck driving, garbage disposal, construction, meat processing, oil rig catering etc which are all currently 'male dominated' careers..... or do you only want to push women into STEM careers which pose less risk to women's safety, and offer more appealing working conditions? "... so I see no problem in promoting a more diverse environment ...." 'Promoting' is when you tell people "hey you should train to be a programmer and then apply for a job as a programmer!" 'Diversity' is when a company discriminates against certain candidates based on their race/ sex. ".. It's just the realty of the very open society we live in.." Like I said, Damore was fired for criticising google's policy of racial/ sexual discrimination (for which they are also being sued for). Racial/ sexual discrimination is the opposite of an open society. "..... Focusing on these people and making a big deal over their overly sensitive reactions only gives them more power and attention...." No, it exposes their lies and hypocrisy and their illegal practices.

'Jogging' was still a fringe activity back then. Didn't he say there were like 400 competitors? Also, probably very little in the way of sponsorship and I'm guessing part of the reason for the reluctance was just the extra cost of catering for women and having the event go on another hour or two before they could start packing it up.

Space Leopard There were women ( and men of course) who where working their whole life to further equality between men and women. Are you really going to deny their achievements (or literally all achievements of feminism) because of a handful of very loud and very angry modern "feminists"?
@theawecabinet
@theawecabinet 6 лет назад
"..There were women ( and men of course) who where working their whole life to further equality between men and women..." Such as what? The suffragettes fought for (and won) the female privilege of voting rights without any associated obligations (such as the draft). That was certainly not equality (as many WOMEN argued at the time, when they opposed the suffragettes). From the very beginning feminists promoted 'patriarchy theory' and played the victim, and used this to make demands for special treatment and free stuff. And here we are today...... men have less rights than women.

In humans, males are indeed physically stronger then females, but that does not have a lot to do with long distance stamina. It was silly to reject females for being too weak in a competition that does not involve that type of strength. It is also interesting that the crowd as well as other runners did not seem to care in either case. Only a select few thought this was a problem.
@Grimmtoof
@Grimmtoof 6 лет назад
Jesse Sisolack there's also the difference between average strength levels and individual cases. A lot of men are weaker that the strongest female weightlifters for example.
@Jesses001
@Jesses001 6 лет назад
That is indeed true, though exceptions to not disprove rules. I am sure there are some professional athletes who are stronger then me, a human male. Also though I am sure I would win a fight against most females, I am also rather sure that Ronda Rousey could kick my ass, ha.

Opening up the contest to women sends out the message that women are welcome to come and have a go at running 26 miles for fun. This would open up the very real possibility of ordinary housewives enrolling just for fun, and possibly injuring themselves, suffering exhaustion, stress fractures (1960's running shoes!), and perhaps even dying. Remember, in the 1960's there was no awareness of fitness like there is today, no culture of jogging, no gym culture, no running/ fitness magazines etc. The event organisers were probably terrified of the potential repercussions of women entering and becoming injured or collapsing along the way. Men are naturally more sensible about physical activity because men are more used to physucal labour, especially in the 60's. And a man collapsing from exhaustion is far less likely to sue for damages, than a woman. And the public would not be outraged at the organisers (or even care at all), like they would if a housewife collapsed. HOW DARE THE ORGANISERS PUT WOMEN'S LIVES AT RISK! etc etc. That is probably the main reason why they were reluctant to let women in. Plus it meant they could not pack up the event for another couple of hours.
@earlgrey2130
@earlgrey2130 6 лет назад
"In humans, males are indeed physically stronger then females, but that does not have a lot to do with long distance stamina." While this is true to some extent, women still can't compete with men in long distance running. Hence the different categories. I actually don't know of a single sport where women can openly compete with men and thus making categories unnecessary.
@Jesses001
@Jesses001 6 лет назад
Gymanstics. Females dominate due to their lower center of gravity. Otherwise I would say you are correct. I remember when IPSC (competitive shooting) started with females, it was thought they would perform similarly to males because it is more about marksmanship then strength, but it turns out females are not quite as fast. Those fraction of a second that males gain pushing the pistol to the next target and firing add up over the course of the day.

Great for her I! I'm glad she could do it. Me, I'd be lucky to even get that mile and a half. Although I probably could do it if I had to. Especially now that I take the bus and walk everywhere. Still while I could probably do it I'd probably collapse afterwards. But that's not because I'm a woman. No it's because I have severe fibromyalgia (chronic pain). Still if I was told I couldn't do it just because I was a woman I'd probably make a good effort at it. Might even get a couple miles in. Of course if I still had my electric wheelchair it would be easy and I'd best even the fastest runners. Well until the battery died anyway. But it's better to time when and how much I walk instead of using that. With fibromyalgia you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Meaning I can't overdo it without extra pain nor can I just sit around because if I don't move about or walk then it's even more pain.

Women's bodies are different to men's. As a woman I believe that majority of women don't want to run marathons. I certainly don't. Women should be allowed to do running and run marathons but I can also understand why people at the time were concerned about women doing marathons because it wasn't considered feminine and they were worried about the bad effects on women's bodies. That's why girls usually stop doing sports from puberty as their bodies are getting ready for motherhood. If girls do activities that could injure them easily then how will they raise children? It's biology. I can see this from both sides. I believe in women's rights as women have equal value in society but we have different roles to men.

The stupidity of imagining women to be more fragile than men in endurance sports is insane. Any species whose survival depends on shoving something the size of a watermelon through a small hole by sheer muscle power and taking about a day to do it -- and who relied on the most weak and fragile member of the species to do that job -- would be extinct in one generation. Men have burst strength, women have endurance. That's how it is in almost all species. They can lift more, we can run and swim longer.

"....The stupidity of imagining women to be more fragile than men in endurance sports is insane. ..." Thing is... women have always exploited their fragility when it suits in order to opt out of dirty, dangerous, manual work and have men do it instead. There are plenty of manual labour jobs which women _could_ do but choose not to. As a result 95% of workplace deaths are men. Most women grossly exaggerate their fragility with flimsy, delicate clothing, dainty shoes, and the mannerisms and noises of a child. In fact the behaviour of most young women in the west is designed to mimic the behaviour and emotions of a child. Wide eyes, squeals of delight, fidgety hands and arms, camp, effete poses etc. All of this behaviour is designed to elicit a protection response in males. Women dress like royalty in restrictive and debilitating clothing and shoes which make them unstable, which also produces a protection response. That is why Royalty traditionally wear these kinds of clothing. So it is either hypocritical to complain when men act over protective towards women, or it just demonstrates a complete lack of self awareness. If feminists want men to stop being over protective towards women, instead of nagging at men about it they could nag at women to start wearing cargo pants, sensible shoes, and no make up and to start doing manual labour jobs, and other dirty and strenuous jobs instead of leaving them all to men.

Given that a lot of their topics come from people suggesting them, it's quite possible that said people see the topic elsewhere and want them to cover it. Today I Found out often digs up information other places either ignore or just don't mention.

Also the fact that a lot of sports have shorter distances for women than men, like we just wouldn’t be able to handle running a few more metres. And what’s with so many Olympic events still being called “ladies”? We don’t call the male events “gentlemen’s “

Mind boggling and shameful how openly discriminating and demeaning authorities/men-in-authority were (even for mundane things) toward women not too long ago, even in first world/civilized countries. Sadly for many countries and cultures its not much different, and the men-in-authority/patriarchal societies find all manner of ways to suppress women.

+Space Leopard-- You seem to be under the mistaken impression that the voting citizens are the ones who choose if/when we go to war, but that's NOT the case. Congress makes that decision in the US. Women are ALWAYS at the forefront of any and ALL anti-war efforts, and always have been! Women see diplomacy as the preferred method of conflict resolution, it's MEN who choose to go to war.

calichef1962 Drafting can hardly be called a choice, I’m a guy and I am anti Conscription for men and women, I think people took equality the wrong direction instead of giving selective service and government power, they should have advocated for it to be taken down so neither gender, no, no person had to fight for a cause they see as unjust, wrong, and immoral.

I am not surprised people and the male runners were supportive. We are talking about white western men. The modern men. The State goverment/council is the problem. People in power who enforced those strict rules are the problem, not the people in general.

Well humans are a sexually dimorphic species, so there is only so many things that can be equal when it comes to competition. For examples, females will always lag behind on competitive weight lifting, and males will never have as much balance for gymnastics as females on average.

It is heart-warming to see that men ARE actually wonderful, and most of the men wanted the women to race. It's, therefore, so sad to see feminsits pushing that one picture of the single male that tried to stop it as the status quo.

Theres no such thing as a proper feminist. THIS is what feminism stands for. It doesn’t matter what all of the ”man haters” call themselves, it doesn’t make them feminists just because they say so. They’re female chauvinists. If a blonde says shes a brunette, it doesn’t make her a brunetye just because she says so.

Alright, I'm actually getting really sick of this "it" business. Can you please stop. Every single video is "The year, it was 1966" or also the "well it" sometimes. The house? Well, it was a house. The car, it was moving. The dog, well it had fur. Come on, just say the noun and the verb. And now that I've pointed it out to your viewers, they're going to notice it like I do. It's MULTIPLE times every video.

This is good. A story about a woman not wining to the press or on social media about something being unfair or sexist but instead working hard to prove she is capable and breaking down some real barriers. She is not a feminist because a feminist doesn't believe in actually doing the work to fix a problem but instead wining and complaining about being a woman and about men systematically holding her down even though she puts no effort into actually climbing.
