I Saw This Show...it's at The Bandshell in Daytona Beach, Florida. Where I used to live for about 30 years. I wasn't planning on going to the Show because of work, The night before the concert The Fixx announced they would be playing at a small motel in Ormond beach, we went to that show and it was Incredible, small room (maybe 500 people), I was so close to Cy, I could touch him...I had bought their new album, and they played All of it...they Sounded So Good !!! After the Show, we met some women (Spring Break) and partied until Dawn !!! Then I was so Hungover... I called in sick to work... and felt better by Noon and went to the Concert on the Beach !!! and saw them a second time in 24 hours !!! Daytona was a lot of Fun in the 80's!!!
Cool story that most can't relate to but I feel ya. If any of you get a chance to see them...go. Cy and the boys put on a great show and you won't be disappointed.
Batphink Reynolds Well now you know a genuine born in the hills of Appalachia Fixx fan. My ancestors were Scotch/ Irish /English and music was always a big part of my family’s life. Music connects us all.
Saw them in 1991 in Ottawa, Canada at the National Arts Centre... best show I have ever seen, a sensual sonic assault on your senses, heart and soul. Simply a group of insanely talented individuals making beautiful noise. Peace and Music.
I love the Fixx, and I try to see them every time they come through my city. The first time I saw them was in 1982 in Fresno, CA. I was totally hooked from the first time I heard them in the early 80s, and I have most of the albums they put out. I can't wait until they come back around again! :)
These guys were so underrated. I am so glad I saw them just a couple of months ago. They sounded so sharp. Just like Rush and ZZ Top and Genesis - they've been together for so long they know exactly how to play their best.
Saw the guys play in Atlanta GA on Sunday the 3rd of June at the Virginia-Highlands Summerfest. Cy, Rupert and the rest of band looked and sounded great. One of the best bands of the 80's still rocking strong!
I saw The Fixx last week, same lineup that you see here, truly amazing in this day and age that they have stayed together and continue to relentlessly tour. They sounded just as good last week as they do here. Jamie West Oram simply creates layers of sound out of his guitar that never disappoints. I'm glad they got to perform at Spring Break back in '89, totally deserved the exposure. Great muscians, all of them.
i've always been a Fixx fan but have only recently seen them live i the last few years (twice)......most excellent.....I can't recommend seeing them enough....go see them people, you won't be disappointed ;)
They're still at their best live. I've seen them three times - in 1997, 2002, and 2004. It's amazing that they've been touring almost nonstop for over a decade now, after their mainstream success in the 80's.
I remember seeing them in concert Here in Tijuana, Mexico, in a place called Iguanas, the year ? dont remember, and i had the T-shirt, Awsome concert singing and jumping all of it . . .good old memories . . . .The Fixx is Forever . . .
I saw this band multiple times in smaller venues in Boston when i was younger and they never failed to deliver a great show. They were tight and loud and I can't wait for their new release. I just heard Cy on a radio show the other night and he sounded great and in good health. Rock on guys!
Very underrated band in my opinion. I've loved them for years. People saw them as a MTV video band solely. Their music is very layered, full of teriffic melodies and of course the dancable rhythms. Go see them perform, friends. Awesome is an understatement.
A band whose music never ages. In other words if you were to hear the band for the very first time today you'd think they were just new to the music industry, whereas they are in fact almost 30 years YOUNG!
Right on Ken, their music was far more sophisticated than many. I think the Fixx had some of the most innovative melodies and lyrics of any popular band over a 20 year spread. Each of the bandmembers were VERY talented in their craft and me being a guitarist, their guitarist was incredibly creative.
For the first time in my life! I got into The Fixx over here in New Zealand when a local covers band called 'The Vision' completely nailed 'Stand or Fall' and 'Lost Planes' when they played at a local watering hole called 'The Whitehouse Lounge Bar' in those wicked '80s. A friend of mine gave me the LP (vinyl) 'Reach The Beach' for my 20th birthday in 1983 (Nov). I played that LP until the needle on my turntable wore out and I knew every single lyric off by heart. 'One thing leads to another'..
Wow! Fantastic live version of this song! Long guitar solo over that sinister, pulsating beat....I could listen to it for hours. That guitar player is absolutely as good as The Edge (u2) but I don't even know his name! Totally underrated band.
Saw them at 1983 Comiskey park...the concert featured Ministry, the Fixx, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, A Flock of Seagulls and the Police. The Police were the best act with this the first show of the Synchronicity tour and after a long hiatus.
Excellent, Cy looks so cool! Their stuff seems so hard to do live that I always expect them to fail, but they don't. Very cool, great sound, great energy and totally original
The guitarist is Jamie West Oram. GREAT player. They started out as sort of a "crossover" band -- half rock, half new wave -- but before long they discarded the skinny ties and new wave style and became a full fledged hard rock band. I saw them on the tour for the "Ink" album ~ 1991 or 92, and they were amazing. I had no idea how good Jamie was, but he really stretched out live in terms of longer solos (than on the records) and more aggressive playing. He's one of my fave guitarists.
Saw them at their zenith in the 80's when all of this was relevant back then. Nice live track. Met them at X-fest in Tijuana as well as at several other small shows around San Diego when they came through town. It would be great to see them live again when they pass through here in Portland.
Agreed. Live is where they really shine. I think some people might be surprised to find they're a little different from what they might expect. When their videos were getting play on MTV in the early- and mid-80s, they were lumped in with the fashionable "new wave" movement along with Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls and that ilk. But their music is far more sophisticated than typical new wave, and live they are purely a hard rock band: long hair, loud guitar, powerful vocals & tons of energy.
I saw this band with Wang Chung on the same night at a casino about 10 years ago. They were as terrific as ever! Can you detect a U2 influence here? I can. And looka dat guitarist, how he jams!
I'm old , went through the 70s( I think ) but the Fixx to me are one of the most underrated yet one of the best in rock history ...they even sound better now :)
Nanoforge1 It's never too late. Saw them last night and they still sound as great as ever. They said they will be coming out with a new album soon and if it's anything like their last one we'll be in for more great stuff, with I'm sure a supporting tour. Do yourself a favor and go see them. Great live band!
One of the great, underrated bands from the 80's. The "real deal". I have this (extended version) on my i-pod, and listen to it often (my i-pod library is very eclectic, all kinds of genres). This is a great live performance. No lip-synch here. Cy's antics crack me up sometimes! 0:31 lol.
That is what I kind of said last night. The bands with the quality are still around, and this band has a lot of quality. And I LOVE DAYTONA!!!!! SPRING BREAK ROCKS!!!! (But I already graduated if this is 89.)
That's true. *laugh* Back in the late '70s they could rock hard when they wanted to, but I never considered them metal either. Not even close. I was just gonna add that if you haven't heard any of their post-PHANTOMS albums, you should. All 3 I mentioned earlier are pretty good, particularly CALM ANIMALS. And I thought INK was shamefully underappreciated. There's at least a half dozen really good tracks on it. Problem was it came out in '91 when grunge ruled, and that was that. :-(
My Best friend is in a National band, or I should say international band opening up for acts such as AC/DC and being on tour with Motley Crue, and we both agree this shit is way better then what they are.... Its just not the same..
I want all their albums on iTunes, not just the best of stuff. Where do I find walkabout??? Love these guys. I think I saw them first in 83 or 84. I remember learning to sing to Stand or Fall when I was 14.
Okay, I guess we're just dealing with semantic differences. Most people would consider VH and AC/DC heavy metal, but some would just call 'em hard rock. I guess it depends on one's point of view. Heck, back in 1980 REO Speedwagon was considered heavy metal by some people. *laugh* I too almost shut the radio off in the mid-80s. AOR changed dramatically in So. California ~ 1983 and never recovered. I'll occasionally tune in the local "classic rock" station in the car, but that's it.
it's all about money.....unfortunately...and the Fixx were all about art....very rarely a band can do both, be artsy and popular...but then, we wouldn't be able to think and talk about the awesomeness of The Fixx....for you and me, it aint about the money, its about the music.....and The Fixx were the fix....cheers.
Check out "Shuttered Room, " "Reach the Beach" and "Phantoms"! (Although all their albums are great.) They've got a new one coming out next week, too. :)
Cause the people who own the music industry now DON'T want you to discover bands like this. They want you to listen to their trendy, flavor-of-the-month acts they peddle as "music" nowadays. REAL bands like The Fixx, making music with substance and not primarily for money, are not profitable in today's music industry. You have taken a step towards "breaking free" from the "mainstream music industry" BUT, there are many more excellent bands like The Fixx out there to be found... Keep searching..
Zoning out but trying to keep it together...looks like he just woke up. And the long sleeves? It's Spring Break on a Sunny day for Christ sake. Must've just flown over from the UK and jumped off the plane.
Likewise. They stood out for the two reasons you mention, plus Cy Curnin was a great singer and they were great songwriters. They had real musical knowledge and intelligence and weren't limited to writing songs based solely on a simple, quirky synth hook. Unlike the aforementioned 80s synth-driven bands, these guys' albums weren't just one quirky hit single and a bunch of filler. Oh, and they had a real drummer instead of a godawful drum machine! *laugh*
@RubHerSoul1 Bud like Heineken is more or less tasting like piss except in the dessert. But Belgian beers like Stella and Wieckse Witte, Trapist and so on are the real beers and the tasty and good stuff...
I only differ from you in that there are a few heavy metal artists I can appreciate, and I hate 100% of rap. *laugh* I don't think they really "fell off the map after Phantoms." IIRC, WALKABOUT, CALM ANIMALS and INK were their next 3 albums, and all except INK did well. CA had some radio 'hits' like "Driven Out," "Subterranean" and "Precious Stone," and INK had "All Is Fair." After INK in '91, however, they didn't put out another album until '98, mainly 'cuz grunge had taken over.
