The Flood are truly terrifying because of how they can take away an enemies greatest champions. And then use all of their talents against their former allies. Worst every single individual they consume/infect all of their knowledge is forever stored within the Gravemind. Making it possibly the most intelligent and wisest creatures in Halo.

@@Dr.Pootis This has so many existential implications, it means that eventually /all/ of creation will be the Floods domain. This isn't your regular enemy, like a singular foe working as a cog in a greater machine. This is a force of nature, the Flood is the inevitability of death given sentience. The consequences of mortality are such that it can never be stopped, and it very well knows this. The gravemind references this fact, "defeat is only the addition of time to a sentence i never deserved. I ebb and flow like water, through rock and metal and time." (roughly paraphrased) The Flood is a ceaseless tidal wave of flesh, with a singular timeless goal of absolute conquest.

@@galbert117 it's not even that they didn't know. It was told in one of the books (I forget) that the forerunners knew of the parasite but didn't consider it a threat (the parallels between Halo and today are astonishing man). The Forerunners and Ancient Humans had a deep rivalry and resentment of each other so when it looked like they were invading, the Forerunners had the "we're defending ourselves against their onslaught" to justify their war. When the Forerunners did find out about the parasite they bunched it with Humans as another sub conflict with fighting humans. "... And now you bring this sickness on our shores." Ur-Didact, Forerunner Supreme Commander. The only time they realized the flood was a potent foe was near the end of the war when the humans were practically facing extinction. They didn't care about the reasons the humans were invading, just that they were invading. It's comparable to when the Mongols invaded the Roman Empire. Iirc the humans tried to send diplomats, but that was far too late during the beginning of the war. The Humans were assholes, but not arrogant. It's also the fact that during the "pre-war" the flood managed to infect faster than the humans to catch up as seen in one of the terminals "... Is it possible we finally got here first?" The humans knew of the Floods imminent and potent danger so they took no risks and sterilized each infected world/ship. Tldr; Basically Humans looked like bad guys and Forerunners were obnoxious assholes fed up with humanity.

I’ve always preferred the original lore of the flood being an unknown extragalactic parasite from beyond the Milky Way galaxy. The mystery added to the terror of the flood, making it seem like it could have devoured countless other galaxies before it came to our own.

@martinnavarrete5279 2 года назад
Well in the books the dust came from outside the milky way and as we know the precursors had seed with life many galaxies before ours, and my personal teory is that the ships that contained the dust weren't of precursor oringin, because the humans did not recognize them even considering the humans were familiar with precursor tech, is probable they consumed other civilization in other place to make their return to the milky way

And also when the flood retreated it is mention they went outside the milky way and hundreds of years later when they returned to consume the forerrunners, the flood was diferent, like it evolved, so maybe in that time the flood was spreading in other galaxies, besides is most probable the flood ensure to keep a part of his forces outside the milky way knowing the treat of the rings

@@johnwhite4070 Star Wars is super accessible and easy to enjoy (Much like McDonalds or any other fast food joint). SW also is a very simple universe. All the planets are basically Earth just slightly different (same gravity, same weather, just geographical differences). Every alien is basically a human with a mask on (Rodians, Duros, etc.) or different skin colors (Twileks, Chiss, etc.) Ik that Star Wars isn't alone on this but I'm still counting it against the franchise. Lastly, the stories are incredibly simple for the most part (Some outliers here and there). Most stories basically are just good vs evil which is generic. The villains do evil shit just for the sake of being bad (no one wakes up and says lets do evil deeds). Most villains might as well have a flashing neon sign that says "I'm a bad guy" (Maul, Palpatine, Malgus etc.). Basically it follows the trope of good looking good guys versus the ugly looking bad dudes.

What terrifies me the most about the flood, and what in my opinion makes them the most menacing yet tragic adversaries to ever be conceived of in Scifi, is the fact that they are a perversion of the very beings that created life as we know it. Imagine that. Imagine how magnificent the Precursors must have been. Neural-Physics, inter-dimensional travel, concepts that have grounds in real life that we can't even begin to grasp. Beings far beyond our comprehension only to be pushed to near extinction by their own creations, and to return as a corrupted and twisted version of what they used to be. Set on consuming and assimilating everything they were responsible for creating in the first place into one singular being. That to me is true horror.

Because boneswords as said in lore completely destroy the nervous system of whatever creature they get a clean hit on so any combat forms that are brought down cant be revived theyd just be lumps of flesh on the ground and that means the flood won't have any use outside of biomass also warriors have skin harder than diamonds so combat forms arent gonna be braking through that easily.

The Momentum to our all sins. The Flood are one of the most deadliest form of parasites I’ve have encounter in literature media. The Flood don’t just create a zombie form, but create a Hive Mind that could out think any individual organisms, and worst they will used the intelligence of the host. Considering that the Forerunners were extremely intelligent and knew the strength and weakness of their technology, and considering that the Flood would’ve won the War were it not for the Halo Array firing killing everything. Though if the Flood were to be released in Cortana Galaxy they will spread rapidly and there will be nothing that Cortana or her Created can do anything about it, and considering that they all may be affected by Logic Plague. There is nothing we can do about it to stop it if it continues to grow.

Also if anyone heard in halo 3 on the last mission halo, when getting near Johnson’s warthog, in the tunnel you hear him saying something, on how he will return. And in the gravemind log in halo wars 2, it is finally confirmed that a gravemind will return, hopefully with the same voice, and wanting revenge on both cortana and chief

@Ninja Love Ooo a potential new fan! If you want to play them in release order it goes: Combat Evolved, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4, and then 5. If you want to play them in the timeline of events it goes: Halo Wars (an RTS game but canonically happens first) then Reach, Combat Evolved, 2, ODST, 3, 4, 5, and Halo Wars 2. If you don’t have an Xbox there are plenty of books that you can read and All of the games except for 5 are in the process of being released on PC if you’d rather wait for that.
@user-cz3yk5qf7m
@user-cz3yk5qf7m 4 года назад
Ninja Lover ODST is the name of a spin-off game which runs in parallel to the events of Halo 2. Instead of playing as a Super Soldier like the other games, you play as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper or ODST. Halo Wars is an RTS or real time strategy game which is very different than the other games which are all first person shooters. In an RTS you are like a commanding officer directing soldiers where to go. You can look up gameplay of a game like Starcraft or command and conquer to see what I’m talking about. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it ties in to the lore so I’d recommend either playing it or watching the cutscenes or a summary on RU-vid. Hope that helps feel free to ask more questions!

This infection..."The Flood" as the call it. It seems like a stronger or more organized version of another parasite from a different dimension. (franchise) They called it "Parasite X". These strange life forms used their gelatinous bodies to seep through any armor or shell of their prey. The X invade the body and rapidly reproduce, killing the host creature while simultaneously copying it's DNA and memories. It then mimics it's victim almost perfectly. Everything about this copy is the same as the original except for its goal, which changes to entirely focus on growing more powerful. As it spreads the infection, it seeks out stronger and stronger creatures to fight. This may seem strange initially, but if a mimic is slain the X will revert to its gelatinous form and swiftly infect its killer so that it can obtain its stronger form. If an X parasite were to infect an able pilot who had access to a suitable vessel, it would travel planet to planet essentially becoming a galactic plauge. Even the counter-measure to the X was similar to the halo rings, at least in terms of it's indiscriminate and destructive nature. They created a predator to the X that they named "Metroids" after their word for "ultimate warrior". The Metroids would drain the life out of any host, and were entirely immune to the X's infection. A small amount of Metroids released freely on a planet would swiftly result in the extinction of all native species. It makes one wonder which of the two parasites would take control of the other.

Damn, didn't talk about those gigantic neural star highways (giant space rubber bands) that were created/controlled by the Precursors... Which subsequently could be controlled by the flood. Can I just point out how the addition of the precursors actually breaks part of Halo's story? Well, not specifically that, but the rewrite that went with it did. Let me ask, why did the Covenant attack Humans? The original story was that the prophets were treating the forerunners like gods, letting them run the Covenant like a cult. They figured out that humans were descendants of the forerunners, which is why a human hand was always needed to activate forerunner tech. However, if the word got out to the rank and file of the Covenant, it would be revealed that the prophets were lying for their own gain, so they wanted to wipe humans out. But with the rewrite of forerunners and humans being 2 distinct species that evolved completely independent of each other, the catalyst for the whole series no longer exists. They also removed the explanation for why humans are the only ones able to activate forerunner tech.
@lukesanchez9961
@lukesanchez9961 4 года назад
Damn good point
@Dennis19901
@Dennis19901 4 года назад
The latter is explained anyway. Humans "inherited" the mantle of responsibility when the Halo rings were fired. It's by design that humans can operate any and all forerunner tech. I guess the first bit now changed to that they were simply mistaken. Also, according to other Halo lore, the Covenant wanted to claim Harvest since it contained many forerunner structures. Obviously humans declined and the Covenant got so salty over this that they vowed to destroy all of us.
@TheVirtualObserver
@TheVirtualObserver 3 года назад
@@Dennis19901 Also worth pointing out is the fact that many modern humans have inherited geases which were passed down by the Liberian that granted them an unconscious familiarity with Forerunner technology. (Hence this is the in-universe explanation for why Humans often don’t need to be told how to activate Forerunner structures, we “just know”. Also the Forerunner artifacts that the Covenant’s luminaries picked up on Harvest weren’t artifacts at all but were rather the Humans living on the surface itself because Humanity was already marked as the Reclaimers to the Mantle.
@starsilverinfinity
@starsilverinfinity 2 года назад
Basically to top off what Dennis and Panda said, when the Covenant found Harvest they were confused af as to why there were so many forerunner "artifacts" on the planets surface. Then after some consulting with a fragment of I think Mendicant Bias they realized that all this time they had mistranslated the symbol for "reclaimer" as in a person/group of persons as "reclaim" as in, reclaim these artifacts Basically Harvest made the Prophets realize their whole religion was a lie and the true heirs to the Forerunners stache were the humans, not them. In a bid to retain the power that leading a zealously religious stellar. . .empire (i think thats a good term for what the Covenant is) they waged war on the humans in order to wipe out the biggest risk to the entire Covenant as they knew it. It was this uncharacteristic bloodlust for human blood that ultimately became their undoing, ironically as up until that point the Covies tried to subjugate wrather than eliminate (even the Hunters/Lekgolo who literally were eating their artifacts, or atleast - some were). That combined with the rising interspecies tension, bids for power amongst the High Prophets before and during the war, and finally their attempt to excise the second oldest species of the Covenant basically resulted in the Great Schism and their own undoing So, no - the rewrite doesn't break the lore, instead it takes the original idea and adds depth to it while retaining aspects of the original prompt (atleast, the one you provided)
