This is a video that Doug produced back in 1999 which covers some of the devastation and triumphs of that disaster. Some great stories are told and some pretty cool footage. The original film was found by a son of the father that lived through the flood. The footage was originally recorded on 8mm (in colour which was very rare for 1948) and was taken both from the ground level and from an airplane.

Tell Doug that he and his assistants did a fantastic job of producing this documentary! Excellent footage, and interviews with folks that can never be duplicated! A mighty big 'thank you' to all!

An irony that a story like this would be presented by "Buy Fraser Valley Real Estate".

There was a house in Fraser mills one of the company houses where the houses were built on stilts and skirted. The floors were well above the ground. One house had a Salmon swim in one door , across the rooms and out the other door. Serious no lie. My Grandfather and family lived in one of those houses.

Which begs the question: global warming had not been invented then, so could it just be a lie.

I find the comments by the people that lived through it were very endearing in their nature. Such as when the said modestly things like. “You would rather not have it a second time in your life” or “ its like fighting in a war,. Once is all you would want of that” . I do miss the stoic nature of the people of that generation. Why are people different now? Have we been living too easy for too long to have that kind of perspective on life.

I think you're too hard on modern people. There were a lot of heroes in the flood of southern Alberta in 2013.

Amazing footage and information considering we are told the 2021 floods are the "worst in history" and all due to "climate change". If so, what was the excuse in 1948?

Spring flooding along the Fraser is normal and expected. Fall flooding, not so much, but why worry about the details if it fits your narrative.

I am curious why the cities allow building and development in a flood area. I guess the flood in 1948 was caused by global warming. Nature has a memory sooner or later it ll come back to its natural state.

pretty stupid they did not build levees high enough to anticipate flooding. likely real estate agents were advising them.

2021 I asked where is higher ground? (in the dark) they said go to the high school. What high school? in the dark I'm going looking for a high school? Filled with people fighting about wearing and not wearing masks? Gas tank is 3/4 full I'm not wasting it looking for a school in the dark/ as gas stations were running out of gas/ I slept in my car in front of the gov liquor store I knew they would protect that building and I got free internet over nite... then and now

Prior to European settlers the Natives didn’t have any land “Ownership” but every year the Haida would come down from the North and war upon local bands and take over their settlements. Tribal warfare is not actually superior to all other forms of displacing populations is it? I know it’s a popular Hollywood romantic notion to suggest that Natives of North America were all harmonious and one with everything and all others. But human beings are all fallible in the same ways. Some individuals more than others and groups of people are a different potential than individual people. Let’s not fall for romantic fallacies. All that being said. This is a story about how nature periodically reclaiming an area of land back to its natural state. Not a story about race relations.
