The flood of 1949 was very concentrated over the Shenandoah Mountain area. Torrential rain drained into the Potomac and North River watersheds and led to catastrophic flooding in Petersburg, WV as well as Stokesville and Bridgewater, Virginia. At least 12 people lost their lives in this flood.
