Sukeroku Yukari no Edo Zakura ("Sukeroku, The Flower of Edo") is a masterpiece of early Edo sewamono drama, first performed in 1713 by Ichikawa Danjūrō II and refined into its final during his lifetime. It is now part of Kabuki Jūhachiban collection of play, but a few other acting houses have also successfully made the role of the otokodate Sukeroku theirs.
Since the beginning of the Heisei period in 1989, the role of Sukeroku has been played 25 times, most often by Ichikawa Danjūrō XII (8 times) or his son, Ichikawa Ebizō XI (8 times), followed by Kataoka Nizaemon XV (6 times). Onoe Kikugorō VII and Bandō Mitsugorō X attempted once each, in 1989 and 2001, respectively.

I had no idea Sukeroku was really Soga no Goro! I’ve seen this play before, but I didn’t know it was part of the sogamono. Thanks for your work!

Thank you once again, Kabuki ID. You are spoiling us with these uploads. This is lovely, lovely and lovely some more! I saw extracts of this Kabuki and am so delighted that you covered it. Thank you for all your hard work, putting all this together and the fine details - the more, the merrier. It makes everything equally as enjoyable to watch. PS: I, too, would love to know the alternative ending. A day without Kabuki is boring.

Thank you so much for this spectacular production involving Ichikawa Danjuro And the alternative ending to this spectacular sogamono would be well liked, since I don't like cliff hangers

Sukeroku was the play which Drew me to kabuki!!!! What a splendid play!! The costumes are fabulous toooo!! Could you tell us more about the comedy part in between ? When he has to pass between their legs? The people laugh so much in this very play but I don’t know what is happening. Also do you know who is the actor playing the role?
