That's max flight speed. Was and still is a viable platform in combat. My brother was in Vietnam and he fell in love with them. When they'd call for air support he said he could watch them all day long. Charlie did not like them at all. The cobra could loiter on station like the a1 skyraider. Charlie would scatter.

HEY! My old man was in those things... with the Raiders and the Playboys... he should have been there most of 1970. Joined in '69 at 32 years of age and went straight over after training (previously joined the Navy and was in subs at age 17), and became head of helicopter gunnery instruction at Rucker when he came back. I like to think I'm bad-ass, but I can't hold a candle...

@@norms3913 Yeah, they were around. They "Guns" that would orbit an LZ before and an Air Mobile unit of Slicks brought in the Grunts. The Cobra was an iconic bird of the Vietnam War. The UH-1, the AH-1 and the A1-D Skyraider all imediately have me thinking back to the Vietnam War.

That's why Chuck Aaron get all the chicks in the bo. I met him once. Cool dude. And cool chopper. The cobra doesn't really do crap because it can't with the underslung rotor system. Elastomeric or not, it doesn't matter. You give too much stick, it's gonna taco the mast. I'm surprised red bull even funds that chopper because other than having a lot of thrust, it doesn't do crap.

I was a front seat Cobra pilot in Nam. My main job was aiming & shooting the mini gun, or the 40 mm grenade located in the nose turret. On the right side of the front seat there was a short cyclic control and on the left side a collective control, and pedals to control yaw/trim. The front seat pilot could fly the Cobra when given permission by the pilot in command in the back seat. In the Red Bull Cobra the front seat controls may have been removed or disabled so a passenger could not mess with them.

TAUL PAUL I suppose you were trained in basic aircraft handling then? Get yourself home if the pilot was hit? Or were the cyclic/collective controls for instructor pilots.

Exactly. What he was doing looked like it could be done with =any= old helo (UH-1 or S-58, anyone?) without any frame of reference. He didn't loop or we would have seen the top of the copter. I think he had some little old lady sitting next to him asking him to avoid spilling her tea. Yeah, that's gotta be it.

It was originally a 20mm cannon with 3 barrels that have been plugged to make it useless. Also the connections for rocket pods will have been destroyed as well. Source? Lead ballast weights are easy to install. It's not a real gun. Just gun barrels.

Well those are all more powerful variants I'm terms of engine performance than this Cobra. I believe this Cobra is an early model.

Front is the pilot always

They were both rated Aviators. It was the pilot in commands choice who flew where. The PIC typically flew rear seat on missions. Rear seater could not fire tow missiles only the front seater could. Rear seat had access to 2.75 rockets and 20mm cannon in fixed forward or off axis using HSS helmet sight system. Front seat had TOW, 20MM thru HSS or TSU turret sight system. And rockets but RMS rocket management system was in the back so back seater had to arm and set mode also front had no way of aiming them

@@robertf6523 Bull-Shit! The Gunner sits up front in an AH-1 and the Pilot-in-Command(PIC) sit in back; that is how it is done with the Gunships in the USMC and U.S. Army. The rear cockpit has the full avionics suite and full instrument panel. Ergonomically the AH-1 was designed to be flown from the rear cockpit and the weapons system, primarily the chin gattling gun was designed to be fired by the Gunner in front.
