You explain in two minutes what others would take 12 minutes, and wouldn't have done better. Thanks for the great lesson. Greetings from Brazil.

Very correct. Surprised by the many internet videos speaking of "lens distortion" when it should actually be "perspective distortion". Wish there were more videos like this.

Great video, but one of the things that you forgot to draw attention to is the width of the shoulders at each focal length. At the beginning, when you were moving closer to the model as your focal length decreased, it was amazing to see how the shoulder width changed, getting smaller and smaller as you moved closer. I find that some subjects, particularly women, are very sensitive to how wide their shoulders look and moving closer with a wider angle lens really helps. I find that a 50mm lens can be the right compromise between shoulder width and face distortion.

That also means the model always has to be right in the center. Closer to the lens edges the distortion would be really bad.

Prime lenses are the best for portraits. I use a Sigma 50 mm F/1.4 Art lens or go for the Sigma 85 mm F/1.4 Art also. I have the Canon 24-70 mm & 70-200 mm F/2.8, but I find that prime lenses are much more sharper since zoom lenses have more lenses to deal with vs. a prime lens that has less lenses.

Nice video. I always try to teach that it's ok to shoot a portrait with wider lenses especially a 50mm on a crop sensor makes a nice portrait lens as well. I never saw anyone prove it on youtube till now.
@bobrob8839
@bobrob8839 5 лет назад
martinS S that’s because a 50mm on a cropped sensor is an 80mm full frame equivalent, which is a normal portrait making range.

And that's why I don't like "you do not need a zoom lens, you can zoom by walking" kind of comments. Yes you can "zoom". But that will change the perspective.

This is good info...but PRACTICALLY SPEAKING, the focal length is a SIGNIFICANT factor in portrait facial proportion. For the reason you demonstrated.

also note that the further you are from your subject the more pronpounced is the effect of your hands shaking.

The same experiment will clearly show that the dreaded "crop factor" of f-stop on small sensor cameras does not exist. Depth of field is related to camera-subject distance, not sensor size.
@DavidBergmanPhoto
@DavidBergmanPhoto 5 лет назад
Truth!
@jaypob
@jaypob 5 лет назад
I disagree as the dreaded "crop factor" isn't talked about when your maintain camera-subject distance. People talk about it in the context that the crop factor forces you to change camera-subject distance in order to maintain the same composition, therefore negatively affecting your subject separation.

it would have been nice if you threw in just a little bit about barrel distortion. So the culprit is the curvature of the glass not just how close you are. At the apex center of the lens the glass is it's thickest and "flattest", which is why there is less distortion at the center. Which is why the center of the image has similar framing proportions when you back away with the wide angle. Try shooting the subject off center and do the same experiment. the results will not be the same, again because the glass is curved. Or you could get a rectilinear lens and problem mostly solved.

Why not have cramed-in that only the very center portion of the framing with wide angle lenses will 'work' for Your statement. Outside it will stretchchch..

Being that focal length has everything to do with distance of glass from the sensor, key word being distance, I think your splitting hairs. But, it's a a great way to help understand focal length and neat experiment.
@christianpetersen1782
@christianpetersen1782 5 лет назад
Rodney Tyler Surely not distance from sensor? You mean distance from subject? A large mpx sensor would allow cropping to still give a large print I.e.Sony A7r.

Tomatoes, tom-ah-toes, saying its the distance not the lens distortion is semantics, not substance. And you are just plain wrong, or at least misleading. Few photographers can shoot a good portrait with a wide angle lens. Because of LENS issues - otherwise an aspherical wide angle lens would not exist... Even with the aspherical lens, small deviations in angle will visibily distort the subject.
@robertkorn
@robertkorn 5 лет назад
It's not semantics, it's physics. And you are confusing distortion with perspective, two different things completely.
@DavidBergmanPhoto

I stand by my thought process and very much disagree that you can’t make a good portrait with a wide angle. But I really do appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Everyone is welcome to contribute.
