Although our senses have evolved to give us a detailed perception of the outside world, as soon as that information hits our brain it becomes biased and distorted, usually without conscious effort. Whether it's a romantic relationship or the planning of an offensive war, there are many opportunities to lie and self-deceive-but deceit and self-deception alienate us from reality and can lead to disaster. Why does deception play such a prominent role in our everyday existence?.

What an interesting talk. Robert Trivers is one of my heroes. What a privilege to hear him directly. He has a voice identical to Bob Woodwardard (Watergate).

Without your suggestion I may not have noticed, but he definitely sounds like Bob Woodward.

At 33 minutes he's asked about an immune-suppression/ self-deception correlation and he admits that he can't answer it. Perhaps co-authoring a book with Robert Sapolsky would bring about a fruitful resolution.

There was another similar presentation by Trivers to a class, I think at Rutgers although he was a guest speaker not the instructor. It was really funny. He made some great remarks about people who won Nobel prizes for what he thought were fairly minor accomplishments, essentially taking well understood mathematics principles and applying them without much additional thought to problems in biology. What I loved was he was so loose and funny, especially at the beginning, toward the middle and end he got more serious and the brilliant ideas just started flowing. Anyway, does this ring a bell with anyone? I searched for it but couldn't find it.

I was really enjoying the introduction until he launched into the psuedo-scientific signs of lying. Evidence of cognitive load shows I am lying... or maybe thinking? These theories are unsophisticated and wont work for the best liars and probably less still for sociopaths or disinterested philosophers.

depends on the context. If you ask someone to do two questions at the same time or interrupt them during a task then yes. However, if the person is unloaded cognitively then suddenly they claim to decide to multiply 4 digit numbers using only their brain whenever you ask them a simple question it's pretty suspicious

“Freedom from self-deception is the transformation of consciousness.” David Bohm Maybe there is the possibility that the speakers own root self deception has him focusing on the content of thought. But we have to look at the process of thought so that the content does not trick the process. If there is no receptivity to the process, then how can we trust any truth the speaker is saying about content.
