This lecture was recorded on November 13, 2011 as part of the Distinguished Science Lecture Series hosted by Michael Shermer and presented by The Skeptics Society in California (1992-2015).
Whether it's in a cockpit at takeoff or the planning of an offensive war, a romantic relationship or a dispute at the office, there are many opportunities to lie and self-deceive-but deceit and self-deception carry the costs of being alienated from reality and can lead to disaster. So why does deception play such a prominent role in our everyday lives? In his bold new work, Rutgers University evolutionary theorist Robert Trivers unflinchingly argues that self-deception evolved in the service of deceit-the better to fool others. We do it for biological reasons-in order to help us survive and procreate. From viruses mimicking host behavior to humans misremembering (sometimes intentionally) the details of a quarrel, science has proven that the deceptive one can always outwit the masses. But we undertake this deception at our own peril.

RT is one of the giants whose shoulders Richard Dawkins (he's cited often in The Selfish Gene) stood on to achieve his amazing heights. Many of the Big Atheists and thinkers in psych, evolution and social science point to him as a major influence. He has some unusual opinions and he's a weird guy but a good person and an utter genius. D.A., J.D. (atty/writer/ New Atheist) New Jack City

Steven Pinker (a big thinker), in The Blank Slate (a book everyone should read), repeatedly refers to Robert Trivers. I was thinking about writing a blog post about some of the points made in The Blank Slate that relate to Trivers, and that lead me directly to this video.

His work stands for itself...I think all of us involved or studying evolutionary theory know his work.

Bob is great! Not joking around about anything that really mattes (for example in which direction causality runs in a given scenario)! He made 3 mayor contribution to evolutionary biology: The concept of reciprocal altruism, correlation between parental investment and mating behaviour (predicting that the sex with less parental investment is proportional picky) and vary of investment in off-spring depending on status and sex.

I wish he explained exactly what is meant by "boosting/increasing the immune system". I wonder how that works? I Googled it just now and it seems that it's not necessarily a good thing, and that it can cause autoimmune disease. A better balanced immune system is what actually is good for you, apparently, whatever that means.

The evolution of self-deception is a useful starting point for understanding why public intellectuals like Michael Shermer haven't yet read Peter Navarro's report but continue to make pronouncements on a certain topic.

Why is religiosity maintained? Well for a start, Abrahamic religions tell people to avoid contraception and have lots of children. So that doesn't require religiosity to have any actual benefits, it's just a matter of outcompeting those with no religious interest. In fact the amazing thing is that there are always people in the population who DON'T have any religious interests, despite all the opposition to them prevailing. And there must be a reason for that. Like, for example, they happen to carry society, kicking and screaming, along a path that ensures survival, ie their absence would lead to societies collapsing because of their own ignorance and unwillingness to change.

This is relevant for the body & survival of the species. But is not relevant in a higher level context. E.g., political, corporate, social, or conceptual systems (the evolution and survival of ideas). What we really need is something like an antibody for assholes. Why? the timescale for biological evolution is on the order of thousands of years. We have made our own jungle where we select as well as are selected for/against. The properties of our jungle evolve on the order of seconds to years. I.e., if we don't decide on how to protect ourselves, it will get decided anyway. And may not be in our best interest. E.g., Fascists might decide "what's best for everyone".
