String is attached to his right wrist - you can see a little armband there. I'm guessing it works like those retractable name-tag cords, but with a more finely tuned tension on it. That's why it returns straight to his hand after it hits the camera. Still a great deal of dexterity in the way he manipulates it, and catching it in his left hand like he does makes it so real and beautiful. Genius.

And now somebody can do the actual Darth Treya thing. Nice.
