There’s actual reasons why Trakata wasn’t used 1. The blade deactivation works both ways, if you’re removing your only line of defense you’re easier to kill especially when everyone has precognition 2. The force makes everything harder 3. Lighsaber ignition takes some time

@@MonteAdorableMaxhonestly I think the best way of utilising this style is with a double-sided lightsaber because once you turn off one side you then be able to use the other side to attack with you can also be tricky with it and attack with the side that you just turned off in order to trick them honestly I feel like you just have to be creative to make it work well
It's also very ineffective. When clashing, you're not aiming at the opponent's sword, but at the opponent themselves, so the moment you turn off your saber the opponent's gonna fly straight at you.
That's...not really how momentum works. The style relies on turning it off right before your blade would connect while also avoiding their's. The effectiveness therefore depends partially on the opponent, partially on your ability to avoid a slash, and partially on whether you're foolish enough to become predictable when using it. A phase blade can take care of the predictability to a point but since you don't actually control when it turns off you'd need a lot of skill to compensate.
@@DarkEcho32 Hm. I mean, I guess that makes sense. I keep forgetting that a lightsaber wouldn't really weigh anything, nor would it require good force put behind it to cut anything. Therefore dodging and attacking would be much, much more effective than with a normal sword.
In addition to what previous guy said, Trakata is extremely effective in attack, much more than in defense - as the moment your enemy try to parry or block your attack you bypass his sword
The real issue with Trakata is that it only really works with the element of surprise. You lose valuable time deactivating and reactivating your saber, and, if your opponent sees it coming, they can easily take advantage of the temporary defenselessness and strike first. In other words, it's similar to any cheap tactic- once you learn how to counter it, it's strictly worse than a more refined technique

I now want this to be part of Darth Revan’s fighting style. If anyone lore wise could use the Jedi equivalent of Iaido and make it look insanely cool? It’d be him. Makes sense as well. Not quite a Sith not quite a Jedi… it’d be more than in keeping with his personality. Not to mention Revan was strong in the force, perhaps almost as strong as Anakin but he was allegedly not quite as talented with a light saber. A fighter like that may embrace techniques others would find distasteful in pursuit of victory and survival.
It logically doesn't really work either, if you're blocking a swing and then use it you either get hit by the swing since you're no longer blocking it or you dodge the swing and land your hit but you could've just dodged in the first place no?
Why are people acting like this would work? The people who are fighting have precognition they can see the future. They are going to capitalize on that split second of your light saber not being on and you are going to be cut from cock to sternum doing a massive split.

Another thing to remember is that in duels you typically block a strike with another strike, if you turn your lightsaber off you’re going to get cut in half.
I prefer this explanation, since morality has little to do with actual tactics in combat (just look at history and you will see a lot of underhanded crap being used by every group) and in reality the usage of something is determined on practicality
@@DarkEcho32 you have to keep in mind that no matter how smart you are, you are voluntarily putting yourself in a situation where your opponent has a weapon trying to hit you and you don’t. Not to mention, force users have precognition, your opponent will always know what you’re trying to do before you do it. Turning your lightsaber off is the Star Wars equivalent of spinning in a sword fight (all though Star Wars certainly makes this mistake often as well), you are pretty much always in a better position if you don’t turn your back on your opponent and you don’t turn your lightsaber off.
@@josephthomas8714 the point to master with the style would have is parallel thinking. You can't stand in place if you're going to shut your saber off, which is what causes them to be caught off guard. There's also predictable that has to be kept in mind though, as stale moves are more lethal when your swords are as hot as the sun. That one could be countered with a phaseblade, but the problem with phaseblades choosing when they falter is rather obvious. I can't say I fully disagree or agree with it being a bad style as it comes down to both the wits of the user and how they can improvise as well as the opponent's own wit at seeing through it... I suppose that's something it has in common with throwing a sword and switching to a secondary one, if on a more lethal scale. When it works, it's devastating. Mess up, it's devastating in a different way. Also not directly related, but I'm almost shocked to see a proper discourse with actual points being made. All it appears to be is disabling your blade and reenabling it (without using your hands). It’s basically just an advanced form of repositioning and counterattacking. If the ENTIRE style is: turn off blade->step forward->press hilt against chest dramatically->ignite like we see in the clip, it clearly sucks and you’d die. As a tool to be used tactically as part of existing lightsaber combat, it’s pretty reasonable and would be super good for faking people out. People practicing HEMA or even Fencing would get FUCKED UP if you could make your sword disappear and then instantly reappear directly pointed at their chest at will. Especially when a single touch is a knockout with lightsaber combat.
@@ChunkyTheClown That's if your opponent, in their parry, isn't aiming at you, but your sword. If they're aiming at you, Trakata is worthless--if they're aiming at your sword, Trakata is amazing. If you're good, you aim to riposte in your parry. Trakata would be good against novices, and not masters. I feel it would make sense that the Jedi and Sith look down upon it as unskilled for that reason, and not just because it's "unfair".

If u flick it off and on quickly during a flurry of attacks there is a *fair chance* (like with any other technique) it catches someone by surprise and slips through their guard (just like any other technique).

Because those who really practice in sword fights understand it is suicide move. Both will die. Remember, in movies choreography, actors doesn't try to hit each other, they target is blades of each others, because it is look cool. In reality swordsman trying to hit you every moment. So if you shutdown you sword it doesn't mean your opponent will stop as idiot, he will hit you. You made a hole in him he cut you in half.

You obviously don't turn it off at any moment at every attack or movement you do, that would be stupid, defeats all the purpose of a surprise attack if you literally scream it before you do it

Well you don't even need to be predicting it right? Like. Blades don't just lock for no reason. You're both actively aiming cuts at the opponent and pushing against each other. The second their Saber turns off all that momentum carries forwards and cleaves them in two.
I've heard that argument but it only makes sense with single blades. Duel wielding you could keep one on at all times for defense. You could also use the force to control the 2nd (or 3rd if duel wielding) and flick that one since worst case is a broken saber if the get it between ignitions
Not really. It leaves you WIDE open, and is ONLY viable if the opponent ONLY defends, because if both blades are coming at each other and yours turns off then nothing's stopping THEIRS. It's suicide, and the last thing you want to train muscle memory for is turning the saber OFF during a fight.
For real. Also you could argue that it’s too risky to use as you’re relying on your enemy blocking you in order to open them up. If the enemy blocks in a way that would cause an attack and you’re saber isn’t there to stop it because you think you’re fancy… Congrats you played yourself
Reality, its dumb. Every block in fighting should be a blow that didn't land. If you pull in your saber when they are about to clash their blow will injurw or kill you.
I'd rather stay with the theory that they don't do it because the timing for the last to come out again is not fast enough to protect you from your opponent's reaction
Honestly they could have made a much simple explanation : when you turn off your lightsaber, there's a short moment when you can't ignite it back Might be good for confusing the enemy, but you can't just re-ignite it and kill him, and for two seconds (roughly) you have no weapon against one of the most powerful ennemy in the galaxy So, yeah, I feel like this explanation is much simpler and would work better
Some guy made a video about this exact question. Basically, turning your lightsaber off to bypass the enemy block also means that you aren't blocking their swing anymore as well. And in a sword, fight your enemy won't be aiming to hit your sword but your body or head, which means that you give them an open window to strike you down and they split you in half before you can turn your lightsaber back on or you both die if you manage to do so.

I always thought it's also a dangerous maneuver to pull. You aren't just turning off your weapon, you're turning off the only thing that's able to block your opponent's saber. Force users tend to have borderline precognition when it comes to fighting, so the instant you turn off the saber they would slash you because you don't have anything to block with. They could go for the saber itself to disarm you or just one quick motion and you're in pieces. Either way, as soon as you turn off your weapon you're wide open.
You're forgetting about your own precognition. Also, a true master of Tràkata knows how to compensate for the split seconds of vulnerability that the technique provides.
The real reason is that the writers realized this could have been abused so much so they had to invent a contrived story as to why no one has ever attempted to use this on the series.
Yet there are some Trakata masters who use it. The big issue with Trakata is that while it can give you a huge benefit if you're going for a killing blow if your opponent is unaware, it also is a huge detriment if your opponent can react quick enough. Basically, either you kill, or you get killed. There is no middle ground. Its only really worth using if you're already losing in a death battle, because in a winning battle, you wouldnt need it. This is where the "weakness and having a lack of power" and "dishonorable" comes from. Similarly to "stabbing a swordsman when his back is turned". It's admitting you lost and gambled your life in a last ditch effort to win. This mindset is ofcouse a bit useless if you care about living a lot more.

@@hacker-tp1giTrakata isn't shit,it just used when the enemy is on DEFENSE,ie when you're the one pushing them back while they have no time to attack and they are blocking attacks,it not supposed to be used while you both exchange lightsaber hits,it a chance attack It basically a complementary style,and the only 2 people to use it also have mastered all 7 other lightsaber forms on top,as Trakata is a style specifically made to create openings of the sort

About the gray Yeah. Like the granatethrower in any shootergame. I used it a lot in my learning time for shootergames if i have a player befor me that is way more skilled than i am. Many ways lead to rome. Kind of way dont matter
