He doesn't have a reason why anymore. He just gives similar numbers based on comparable vehicles while adding or subtracting a number to arrange it however he wants.
I remember as a late teenager being in a band with some guys who were in their late 30s and our lead singer had an F150 Harley Davidson Edition and thinking it was the coolest, sickest truck I'd ever seen. I'm 38 now and still love this truck ❤
My dad had an 02 model that he always drove like a grandpa, absolutely never let the supercharger kick in which is probably why it's still running at nearly 200K miles 😂😂
That's good. That's how you make it last. You should only drive a car hard if you have the money to fix it when it breaks or plan on buying another car.
Damn I honestly never realized those things were supercharged like the Lightning. I still see a few nice ones around town but not many. I only remember people driving them around carefully and responsibly some how. I feel like I would have remembered and loved seeing one getting after it I loved that as a kid. Still do.
I'm starting to think Doug is so good at this, that he purposefully overlooks things to get more comments haha. Partly joking, but does he not realize the gauges are meant to mimic Harley gauges? The gear selector is meant to mimic a handlebar. The side step is meant to mimic Harley tailpipes. If you rode a Harley, this was supposed to be the most Harley a truck could be. Doug usually nails these types of design themes but I was surprised by this one. Still an amazing truck and a great video!
You missed one other ver subtle Harley Davidson feature most don't see, the little black dots at the base of the windshield were actually shaped like the Harley Davidson shield. They also sent a plaque in a leather hinged box with your name and vin numbers as well as a Harley Davidson styled swiss army knife that had a blank key you could get cut along with all the typical swiss army knife tools in a leather flame embossed sheath. I had one with around 425 hp.
Just want to point out something cool about those rear seat audio controls that wasn't mentioned. You can actually listen to a separate audio source from the front seat passengers if you have headphones connected. When you pushed the headphone button it would let you change sources and show what you were doing on the display in the front. My mom's Excursion had it and I thought it was super cool when I was a kid!
My father owned a Ford dealership in Vermont in the 90s and 2000s. He hated these trucks. Ford required all franchisees to carry at least one on the lot, but as a RWD only truck, they were impossible to move in a snowy, mountainous state. Each year, he'd immediately run discounted ads in NY, CT, and NJ newspapers to get it off his lot as soon as possible.
Ford's mistake was not realizing that certain areas have their own markets. So many good cars fail because of this. Instead of splashing it across every market in every area, they should have concentrated sales in areas they researched as being prime target audience markets. In my opinion, if they had done this - or in any similar brand and circumstance - their vehicle would have flourished in the chosen markets and gained popularity. rather than failing overall due to being spread everywhere.
@@enochthewitness-2023not only that but more of them would have lasted. Even down here in Florida lot of people can't handle rear wheel drive truck in the rain. I think a lot of these got destroyed because they had too much juice and not enough footing on the ground. I know for sure many of them have been wrecked but I bet a lot of them were destroyed because somebody screwed up in the snow.
It’s actually crazy. I work for DOT in Va and I was scanning the traffic cameras and saw a crash happen. As I zoomed in, it was a Lincoln Towncar that was rear ended by an F-150 from this model year. As I zoomed in more and saw the Harley Logo on the side, I was so upset lol and felt so bad for that guy lol
I've got fond memories of my dad's friend importing one of these here in the UK, and going for rides in it as a schoolkid. There was nothing even slightly similar to it on the roads here in those days.
I had 2 separate 2002 HD F-150s, they definitely hold a special place in my heart. I got my first one as a Sr. in HS in 2004 for $18k. I left a few sets of tires coming out of the parking lot at my HS. The blower whine is etched in my head forever. The first one was bone stock. The 2nd one had a lot of engine mods and made about 450hp. I love seeing them around and would love to have another in the future!
Imagine being in such a position where in high school you can spend 18 thousand dollars to buy a 2 year old car. That's like being in high school in 2023 and buying a 2021 mustang. What in the rich parents giving you free rent and utilities is this shit?
@@mattm7798 I call bullshit, it had a $36,000 msrp so it was either beat to shit with an insane amount of miles or you're a liar, pics or it never happened.
@@TheScrubmuffin69 lots of rich people lol. Literally at my college there's some students driving nicer cars than the professors lmfao. They probably had parents money because what teenager just spends 18k on a car wtf
@@TheScrubmuffin69I know right? I was a senior in high school at the same time. I had a 10yr old 1994 Ford Ranger (purple) and I paid 300$ a month for it (3800$). I was car poor but it was mine.
The rear console was also on the King Ranch trucks of that era. My old man had one. Was really comfortable back there. Would be a cool option on current trucks.
I had the 2003. Was a fun truck. Traded it in on a raptor when the first gens switched to the 6.2L. It had a bit of engine work done to it by the previous owner bringing the horsepower up to 450 and had a lowering kit. Surprised a lot of people who wanted to race at stop lights lol. I still miss it more than the raptor i had afterwards.
@@AlexGray I have an 03 Harley F150 and it's honestly been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. It's never stranded me and the only non-maintenance repair it's needed was rear axle bearings. It developed a whine and we found some water contamination in the fluid that corroded the bearing races a bit. It didn't even harm the gears, despite mine having about 100hp in mods and a punisher valve body (shift kit) that bangs gears pretty firmly. Over 200k on it and it still has the original AC, water pump, alternator, supercharger, etc. and it''ll start up and drive across the country tomorrow although it would be cheaper to fly first class then to put almost $100 worth of super unleaded (required) in it every 200-300 miles:-). It doesn't even leak a drop of oil. Cons with mine are that being first and AZ, then TX and now FL truck, the sun ate up the window seals, so I've had to replace the seals and clean the interior every time it decided to leak. Then again, my bad for parking it out in the hot sun for 20 years, including a few hail storms and 3 hurricanes. Still looks good and will still leave rubber at the stop light. They are limited as to what mods you can do power wise as it's basically a stock F150 engine with a blower added, so 450 HP is kind of the safe limit according to the forums. Some go higher but it's risky as they can break connecting rods if pushed too hard, although there are several popular vendors who sell crate engines built to handle upwards of 900 HP if you want to throw money at it. Engines are around $6-$7K but the supporting mods will easily double that (injectors, fuel pumps, transmission, differential, tuning, etc.). If my engine ever finally dies, I'll probably go that route. It's not as luxurious as the new ones and of course doesn't have the technology or fuel economy, but it's still unique, peppy and fun to drive. If you find one that's never been modded and drive it normally, I think it would run forever. Even if you beat on it you can get well over 200k-300k on them so long as you do your maintenance on time.
I almost like this more than the Lightning, and that says a lot because I love step side 2 door trucks a lot more, especially with side exits and more aggressive styling.
15:33 I actually have my cruise control buttons memorized. Of course mine don’t have bumps, but it’s easy to tell where the buttons are, and they’re really simple. Top button is increase/resume, middle is cancel, bottom is decrease/set.
There was an extended cab config for this truck, only for the first year they came out (2000), starting in 2001 though they switched to crew cab. I miss this truck, my dad got a new 2001 and I wish he never sold it! I still have the plaque though with the VIN/his name etc, actually found it a couple months ago in a drawer, had no idea he kept it haha.
OMG you finally reviewed this underrated gem. My parents own an '00 harley edition and we've been slowly getting it looking brand new. OEM wheels are sadly gone but will one day roll back to the truck.
I’ve had one of these since ‘05. Got it up to 400 hp and 500 lb torque. Used to run mid 13s at raceway park in englishtown NJ with it. The srt 8 jeep was always my competition and the lightning of course. Great times, great truck.
@@elev8torguy130 I should have known, like how Chevy give’s the newest Camaro the older corvette engine. They all share engines across platforms to save cost of production
My father worked for a parts supplier making interior trim and bezels during the production of this truck. There are several more hidden Harley symbols around this vehicle. One in particular I can recall was a an interior light lense that had the Harley logo embossed in it. It always struck me a really funny because it required a completely new tool to mold the lense which otherwise was identical to the regular f-150 but would have been quite expensive to make for this low production vehicle.
If you grew up during this time then you get how much buzz these trucks had. Orange County Choppers came out with their TV show around this time and it was peak era of motorcycles.
I remember these from my childhood, these were a common sight around my city during the 2000s. These were made for the Harley enthusiast Boomers that were still raising us Millennials lol. They could have their Harley/Chopper and a Harley edition truck to feel like they were the local suburban OCC badass, but still the family man that still had their last kid(s) to raise. I have many friends who were the last kids of their Boomer parents, so I can imagine this was at least a scenario for some families back then lol
Thats probably the cleanest one left. Those were discovered by the Lightning owners as a better alternative to a regular cab truck and promptly ragged out by owner #3 through 10 😂
AND THE PRICE ON THESE JUST WENT UP. THANKS DOUG. I own a 2003 with 43000 in mint condition. Truck gets looks and stares everywhere I go. They are rare especially in good condition.
The wheels of the Harley editions are probably the best f150 wheels that Ford has ever made. Other oem Ford wheels are usually bland but the Harley ones are definitely it. I especially liked the 07/08 wheels.
This is when the wheel wars started. Mom got a 97 F-150 with 17" wheels. A friend got one with 18s and couldn't find tires to fit it. 17s were also pretty hard to come by and expensive as a few Mustang owners told me. Fast forward just a couple years and 20s are a thing. Now they're commonplace.
Had a buddy bought a Vette cant remember what year but he burned the tires off first month he had it. Waited another month to get tires and was EXPENSIVE !
It has spring loaded pins so you can pop it out and re install it easily. The point of the folding is holding your stuff again the tail gate with it shut too. Sort of a bed divider.
Doug, you're underselling the 2011 F150 Harley Davidson trim and you are missing out on a wonderfully quirky car, err, truck. My dad had one and actually talked about getting me this generation F150 Harley Davidson trim off of a coworker for my first car, ended up falling through. But, the point being, the 2011 Harley F150 is just as quirky as this one. For starters, it went far beyond just an appearance package. It's been YEARS since I've seen the truck, so some of the details are fuzzy, but from what I can remember; it had custom leather seats with Harley Davidson emblems, it was this super dark black leather with stitching exclusive to that trim, and it looked really nice. The center dash screen, in a 2011 pickup truck, had its own custom Harley Davidson intro movie. The center infotainment system also had its own thing if I remember right. It had ambient lighting with like a dozen different colors, again, in a 2011 pickup truck. It also had the Harley logo on the bed liner. Each one had an individually numbered plague on a completely unique to the trim center console. It had the same 6.2L V8 that the Raptor had. It didn't have a supercharger but it did make 410HP and sound amazing out of a very similar side exit dual exhaust. It was the first semi-successful generation of the luxury truck. It had an MSRP of $70K and came with things that no other automaker was doing on pickup trucks at the time. It had all the bells and whistles, heated and cooled front seats, heated back seats, it had like a 5" touchscreen that looked decent enough for the time in 2011. It also came factory with this massive subwoofer under one of the rear seats, which also had custom leather and Harley logos embroidered on them. The doors had their own special trim as well. This was also the first generation of Ford truck to have the stairstep on the tailgate that is hilariously quirky and surprisingly useful. It's such an amazingly quirky truck that was an absolute market FAILURE. I loved it though, and still kinda bummed I didn't get the generation of the truck featured in this video as my first car lol EDIT: forgot to mention, the pockets on the back of the front seats weren't just normal pockets. They had zippers. Chrome zippers. With a custom harley davidson grab handle thing. That truck had so many tiny, hilarious quirks like that that I'm surely forgetting. OH It had a similar leather cover for the owners manual as well if I remember right.
I have the 2010 edition and it has pretty much all the same stuff except with a 5.4l engine. Wish it was supercharged but whatever, I love how it looks haha. I really want the 2008 model, thing has so many features as well and its supercharged with 450hp
My father wants the Black and Silver Beluga whale spec Harley f150. I’ve told him for years to get one before they go up in value. But he would always put it off. Now they’re $20k+
I love this truck! My grandpa has an 02 model. That is his baby, my grandma always getting mealy over how much he cares for it. For what it is, it’s a mighty fun truck
While I'm more of an Indian Motorcycles person, I always had a soft spot for these Harley edition F150's (there was one of these hanging around in my area for a number of years, but I haven't seen it recently). These always seemed like the SVT Lightning's big brother in '03 & '04. Thanks for another in depth video, Doug!
15:35 - "Of course, nobody committed these things to memory…" I absolutely did. I had multiple '90s Ford vehicles over the years, and those "touch assists" helped. Of course, modern vehicles put LEDs behind, so the steering wheel controls light up in the dark, but at the time, those worked well.
I was in the Army when these came out. We had just made Captain, which came with a huge bump in base pay. My buddy got one of these. Back then, this truck was beyond belief. It was the most perfect, badass truck you could get. I would say the "hype" approximated that of the Raptor when it was first released. When you saw one, you freaked out I continued to drive my 1996 Honda Accord (manual). Still miss that car
First off...Thank You for your service! 🇺🇸 Meanwhile, around that time, my friend in the USMC bought a KIA...and I was all like, are you sure that's a good brand to have? Fortunately, it didn't become ironic. He did a couple tours in Iraq and came back. Sadly, his gold digger wife divorced him because she thought she could "make more money at Target". But, it was probably best in the long run...oh man, I'm drunk.... telling stories to strangers now.
A guy in my neighbourhood had one until a couple weeks ago (I live in Germany). I was happy every time I saw it. Now it's gone and I miss seeing and hearing it. It was also his daily.
Oh dude, I have a diecast model of this thing at home I bought from The Sharper Image store back when this truck was newer. Definitely wanna see this review! Edit: On my diecast model it also has that bed extender which is neat in it of itself, but I also happen to have a same scale (1:18) model Harley motorcycle that actually fits snuggly in the bed with the extender down as well! So, I believe them when they say a Harley can fit in the back.
why do you have to believe them? surely they tested multiple bikes fitting in the back during the design of this truck😂 if it didn’t, they wouldn’t have had this feature 😂😂
These things were so damn sweet back in the day. Friend of mine bought a supercab 2001 brand new. We had alot of fun in that truck. Looked like a cadillac truck. Sounded great also.
My father has an 2007 F150 Harley Davidson that also came supercharged from Ford putting out 450 horsepower. We still have it to this day with about 100k miles
Kind of disappointed you didn't review the 2003. It's the superior of the 2 supercharged models IMO. The theming was so much cleaner with the silver and black. I had a black 03 with a 4/6" drop on 22" replicas of the factory 20" wheels. Was an absolutely beautiful truck and got so much attention. It has a mid level motor build with 425whp/515wtq. I never lost to a viper truck. It was a burnout machine! Sadly on Christmas Eve 2015ish it was at a shop that was broken into and completely ransacked. The interior was trashed when they ripped the stereo out and they dented and scratched the exterior. It was put back together but it was never the same. Could never find those wheels again. Miss it every day. Such a badass truck. A lot of people don't mention you could actually use these as a truck. I towed my 20' enclosed car hauler and boats across the WA passes regularly. That was ultimately the reason I went with the Harley F150. Viper trucks and Silverado SS are pretty pansie when it comes to actual truck stuff. When I eventually sold it I got $1k less than I bought it for after owning it for 10 years and 100k miles. Can't argue with that. I bet it would be $10k more to buy one today in the same condition.
I have the 2010 edition of it right now and I love it, but the 2008 is by far my favorite edition and I really want it lmao. its got a supercharger on it as well with 450 hp
15:17 Those little nubs on the steering wheel buttons were actually for blind people to differentiate them easier. Very considerate of Ford to add that feature for them.
I agree with the Harley Davidson F150 being the more practical version of the Lightning, and in my opinion, it was also more special and unique than the quad cab version of the SRT10. That was just the Viper V10 and 4 speed auto from the one tone Ram installed into a regular four door pick up.
I remember these trucks. I was in High School. I raced one of these trucks in my 2000 Mustang GT. We were side by side for 1/8 of a mile. Supercharger sound is the best!
My step dad bought this brand new then let my brother and I drive it all the time… eventually have it to my brother. What an awesome truck. The supercharged V8 was an absolute blast. You could smoke the tires just by looking at the gas pedal. Miss that truck.
Umm... the eleventh generation F-150 had a Harley edition starting in 2006. A friend of mine had one. He was a big 'ol boy that ran trains for CSX. He had a pistol in one pocket of his coveralls and a bottle of Crown Royal in the other. A good fellow, for sure.
I had to attend an apprenticeship class back in 2020 and the trade school had one of these donated by Ford when this body style was new, it only had 10 miles on it. They also had other time relics like an original Lexus RX, Volkswagen Touareg, and Pontiac Grand Prix all of which with no mileage and perfectly preserved
A friend of mind in highschool had this truck(went to a high school with alot of wealthy people lol). It was a really nice truck but I completely LOL'ed when I saw the radio and alot of the internal parts where straight normal ford parts. For what he paid for it, they should have totally upgraded internal parts(tho the speakers IIRC were really good)
Interesting - didn't realize that not all were blown 5.4s, figured it was basically a 4dr Lightening, but nope. That back seat situation is interesting too. Love that supercharger whine. A neighbor down the street had one a while ago.
Unbelievable, I just saw this pickup truck on my way back home a hour ago and I told my friend “That is a rare one” (in Middle East) and this is the first video I see on RU-vid.
Adjusted for inflation $64,000. That is proof how much Ford is price gouging everyone these days. This same truck would be $100,000 now. Something has to give with new truck prices…
My friend had an early 2000s Trailblazer when we were in high school, and it strangely also had a voice recorder, worked almost the same as this one. We had so much fun with that...
Was working at a body shop and a co-worker had an average F150. Needed a windshield. Accidentally got a Harley-Davidson windshield, is a very small quirk and feature, but it did have the Harley-Davidson shields in the black outline around the edges of the glass. The parts dept slipped up,he got a 600$ windshield because of the little detail for 130. He put lightning rims on it too.
15:33 I actually like when cars or electronics have those tactile features because it helps when using it at night in the dark. I use this feature everyday with certains objects including in my car. Very smart idea.
You also neglected to mention. The 5.4 in the Harley trucks was a regular production engine. The 5.4 in the lightning was all hand built, so there was some differences in the two engines
The 5.4 seemed to have a few issues too. I never had any of those issues in this truck. Later 5.4s I had did have those issues. Maybe it was the build quality that made the difference? Anyway this truck was a blast.
That’s for the cobras. The only difference between the lightning and na block is the compression ratio. Same rods, same crank just different pistons. Some na trucks have the forged crank used in the lightning/ harley
My best friend from elementary school had 2, a black and a silver one still had them to this day, just seemed like a regular truck to me since his wife drove the silver one
@@justno8019 It's quite a claim to call another man a liar, one that shouldn't be made lightly. Let's see your proof that this random stranger you've never met before is lying.
I have the Larret version of that truck (Mine's a 99 but it's the same generation.) I only drive it when I absolutely need it, but it's decent enough for what it is. @@onefastboi14 Yeah he spent thousands getting it fixed and still had issues. Maybe it was an outlier but he said, "I cannot wait to get rid of this fucking thing" Truck was bad ass though... But if it is mechanically screwed, it ain't worth the trouble.
@@Bizarb that’s sad to see. I looked on some of the forms after this and apparently some people 4x4 swap these. Look like cool trucks but if they’re plagued with constant transmission problems then that’s a no.
@@onefastboi14 Yeah, a simple Google search for this truck and you'll see it get roasted via it's transmission issues. Issues that take place at very very low mileage. Shame.
The 4R100 is a robust enough transmission, but they are less than stellar out of the box. In typical Ford (of this era) fashion, they truly do need a revised valve body, which is available (Punisher). That corrects most of the lackadaisical shifting and odd behavior and it isn't expensive. If you want bigger power, a competent transmission shop should be able to do a stout built on it, there are plenty of 500+ WHP Lightnings out there holding up just fine.
I dont know if you have done a video on a Tacoma X Runner but it would be awesome if you can find one, especially a factory TRD supercharged one. I know you usually wait for people to reach out to you but I feel like there might be some around SoCal and you might find one to review
Didn’t the F150 have the Harley trim in 2007 that was supercharged? I remember seeing some that were just an appearance package, but also seeing the supercharged ones. You could see the gauges in the middle of the dash on those.
My ex-gf’s dad had this exact same spec truck and I had the privilege to drive it down open Texas country roads. Wow brings back great memories! The truck I mean ofcourse 😅😂
Re: steering wheel cruise control tactile buttons- they absolutely work. I have the same buttons on my 2004 Mach 1 and I always just go for feel and know which one does what by touch
The Harley Davison edition F150 were also available in 07/08 with a supercharger as an option. Then it came back from 2010-2014 and 2011+ came standard with the raptor 6.2. A newer one with the 6.2 and a supercharger would be a complete beast of an f150.
@@OnyxCobra purple ones are definitely awesome and kinda rare. My favourite is the 08 with the exterior graphics deleted so it’s all black on the outside and the inside has the black and copperish coloured interior.
15:34 I still remember the five button cruise control layout from the 1995 Falcon I used to drive in Australia and the three Ford Focuses that I owned in America.
I think some of the interesting design choices are direct references to the motorcycles...the chrome gear selector looks like a handlebar and the turn signals on the mirrors are also a nod to the signals on their motorcycles to name a few details. Pretty cool!
