It took 37 years of cranking for Ford to successfully start the mid-engined followup to the historic GT40 race car. In the process, Ford created - and abandoned - at least seven mid-engined cars meant to recapture the glory from the famous victor of the Ford vs. Ferrari battle at Le Mans.
In this episode of Revelations, automotive journalist Jason Cammisa tells the fascinating backstory of the 2005-2006 Ford GT - and how it, like the seven mid-engined attempts before it - was almost killed off before it hand a chance.

Why are you two fighting down here? Skyline for long journeys on twisty mountain roads (because its sedan-sized trunk is more likely to be able to carry luggage), and a Ford GT for track days and street racing (because while the Hakosuka is an exceptional handler and STUPID fast in its own damn right, 40 years of technological progress isn't really a gap it can close). One is nice. Both is better.

In late 2001 i found an original mk11 model in a garage in the uk. the owner had passed away and his family were looking to sell it. the family had no idea what they were selling and were looking for low 5 figure money for it. i stupidly tried to pretend i had only passing interest in it and did talk their price down a bit, but i waited to long and in early 2002 ford announced the relaunch of the gt 40 with the release of the gt40 concept car at the north american show. the family were made aware of what they had and it wasnt long before many people found out about the car and were making bids on it. i wish i had bought it there and then . it was in absolultey mint and i mean mint condition. the owner had it inside a dehumidified tent in a garage.

The RHD part was more about generating an advantage on clockwise race tracks, which covers most road racing tracks including Le Mans. Those tracks had a bias towards right hand turns, so RHD provided two advantages on right hand turns - better weight distribution (the drivers weight was on the inside of the car) and slightly better sight lines for the driver for the prevailing turns. The Mark IV also had RHD, as did the Ferrari 330 P4 and the Porsche 908/917.

Got to hand it to you. This was the first car ,I ever passed a wrench on, in the early 1970's. Two guys from NY were driving to Cape Cod. When their racing motor ,gave up the ghost. To continue their vacation, they rented a garage space in an old 1940's storage garage. It had two wood slat doors , reinforced with a diagonal wire to keep them from going out of square and each door had a heavy tubular weight, that traveled up and down in the door frame, to ease opening and closing . My best friends, Dave and Johnny, lived next door to this storage garages, with a stockade fence separating their ,property line. A perfect place as a kid , to set up a bow and arrow target. We had the target, a safety, plywood back drop. With Arrows two Bows and Dave and I, aiming for bullseye's. The old man, that owned the storage garages, every single kid in the neighborhood, was afraid of, he would call the police or your parents and complain your ball was in his yard, your balsa plane was on his roof, maybe your bicycle chain broke on his side walk, and you turned your bike over to jimmy it back on the sprockets, he would be irate. His property was to be avoided at all costs , cross the street, walk by in the street not on his side walk! Everybody knew " The Old Man ". So when my arrow did some unplanned aero ,in flight missed the target and also the ply wood safety zone, and pried it's way in flight RIGHT thru the Old Man's fence into his storage unit drive way. David and I looked at each other, turn white as ghosts! What to do, wasn't even a thought, I told David ," I've got to get that arrow or we are DEAD! Between a young tree, and the horizontal runners on the stockade I climbed, heart pounding in my throat, I looked around, No Old Man , I told David, I see it , I'm going over, I'll walk around the fence fast as I can so he doesn't catch me. I jumped down , mind and body, electric at the thought of getting caught, I saw my arrow, I ran for it ,I grabbed it and squeezed it, I'm not dropping this now. I looked back at the stockade fence, the entire length was smooth, nothing close to it to boost me back over, my only way out, the front gate! If the Old Man was around ,sweeping his broom as usual, I'll hide till he is not looking then run for it ,was , my plan. Ok, here I go...then I heard the sound clear as a bell of a hand box wrench bong then bing then jaggle on a concrete floor. What ever in the Universe ,stopped me in forward motion, to go investigate THIS ,sound, as I faced peril, I couldn't explain , then or now! But I went toward the sounds , of voices and mechanical sounds clacking wrenches ,and bouncing wrenches. The two dark green painted doors were half open , trying to be undetected, I snooped around the door to see, what was going on. I saw a bundle of exhaust pipes on the floor, I stretch myself more around the door. I saw a corner of the rear of the car ,door was open, roof was attached partially to it the tire was twice as wide as any Corvette, and it was lower, the roof was as low as most mustangs front hoods. Over in the corner the entire rear body work , leaning against a wall white with two wide blue stripes....I thought to myself , ah Space Ship ?!? I leaned in full of curiosity, thoughts of the Old Man faded as THIS was a discovery ,far more important! I could have stumbled on ,something Big ! As I leaned in the big door squeaked in that , screen door, give away sound! I froze so they thought it was the Wind! Then one of the two guys said," it's ok you can come in, just, please DONT kick anything, or Step on anything , we need to put this back together ,with only the parts we have here." I said ,Hi and Sure, I'll be careful! One guy stood hands on hips a rag in his hand and a large wrist watch. The other guy, the one ,dropping the wrenches was sitting on the tire and unbolting parts and pieces.... What is This! It's a FORD. A Ford , not like any FORD, I've seen before, looking at the V8 between the wheels and the back seat fire wall.....!?? It's a racing Ford ,from England ,a Ford GT . The wrench fell again . I jumped to the ground into push up position and I crawled and retrieved the wrench lightning speed, here you go! Thank you uh....what is your name ? Oh George ! Thank you George, I just keep dropping it for some reason, thanks I'm working in tight places That is how ,I found these two guys and the Ford GT back in the early 1970's. For the next four days ,I'd run home from school, change real fast into play clothes, tell Mom I'd be home for dinner, I'm going to Jonny and David's house! But I didn't, I went to the garage, held bolts nuts brackets, asked a MILLION questions like why is the engine right back here, how can it work with no Drive Shaft? Where is the transmission? How do you fit inside the car, why is the roof stuck to the doors???.......... They said the race engine quit on the high way ,they found this guy in the news paper ad, and had it towed there. They would pull this motor ship it back to NY. And get a used motor from the salvage yard from a Ford mustang or truck to finish their trip to the Cape, and drive back to NY. That fourth day I ran up the hill to their storage unit they had boards on either side of the door floor sill, trying to ease the car over with out scrapping parts on the bottom side. I just sprung into action me on one side one guy on the other and the driver with the loud headers as we tried to lead him over the floor sill. Finally managed out on to the lot and those loud headers ,stopped every body in the neighborhood, they came running, like it was a car accident, BARAP pap PAP PAP!. They gathered across the street, they knew the Old Man too. There were kids with basket balls, on Sting Ray bicycles even girls with Hoola Hoops, all curious about the rumbling Noise ,and then the car ,so low so wide, ONLY two SEATS!!! We were all station wagon kids! A car with two SEATS ????! The car was so low I had to put my hands on my knees to bend low enough to say good bye, the Driver on the right hand side I was on the passenger side shaking hands ,Thanks for all your help George, Sure thanks for the Soda ,I mean " Pop" as they called it in NY ! They slowly edged into the street careful not to scrape. And as I walked into the middle of the street to watch that FORD Space Ship, gurgle, blat and rumble over the road toward the highway the gathering of kids sprawled into the street to get a better view as well ..one kid asked . " What kind of car is THAT? Everybody pressing to hear. " That That is a Racing Car From England a FORD, a Ford GT 40.. I've owned Sports Cars All my life since I got my License, I always bought them needed repair, I always repaired them later restored them before I daily drove them, from Lotus Europa's to Mini Cooper's, to Porsche 356, 912, 550 replica's ,many Datsun Z cars, Healey's 100-4 and Bugeye sprites, Datsun Z cars many S30's. Matter of fact at 66 yrs old I'm resto modding 2 Datsun Z cars today, every week end and most nights. All because of ONE Ford GT 40. And two cool guys with large wrist watches from NY!

To explain how they got it to turn over and not start: the GT is dry-sumped so after an oil change, you can hold the gas and clutch to the floor and it will turn over but not start. It does this to build some oil pressure and lubricate the engine. You can do this for as long as you want until the battery dies but once you release the gas pedal, it will start right up.

Because it was up to the track. The Z06 won on tracks with fast sweeping curves. The GT won on anything with lots of technical sections. The GT's suspension was tuned for more modern European GT Car spec tracks full of hard breaking into 2nd gear chicanes and 1st gear hairpins. The z06 was tuned for US tracks. It really did matter where you took them. The Z06 would be seconds ahead on one track and seconds behind on another. The GT was built to actually go racing in Europe. Which it did, and won. Something Chevy only looks at sideways sometimes and flirts with when they're trying to bolster their image for some unknown reason the rest of the world doesn't understand, and Ford's been doing for decades. Ford builds for the world market, Chevy for the US. When Ford sets a Ferrari as a bar they plan to actually go race that Ferrari in it's home court and win. Chevy will place the Ford in it's sights without actually having to prove it on the tracks they know the Ford was built for because America won't know any better. They go to Le Mans now, they've even won. But in GTM class, not GTE where Ford has its wins.
@300cmysrt8
@300cmysrt8 2 года назад
@@halycon404 I'm not really that familiar with their Le Mans wins. I was referring to the road car performance exclusively. I own a C6 Z06 and was just curious about its development process since when it came out it hung with the Ford GT road car. Didn't beat it but was very close. If I had 400k in spare change I'd have a GT as well. While I'm not sure about the first years, the Z06 was tuned on the Ring later in its life and did quite well.
@halycon404
@halycon404 2 года назад
@@300cmysrt8 Meh. I used Le Mans as an example. Two cars which you say are similar. But they compete in vastly different classes. I have no doubt if you took a Z06 road car to The Ring or Road America it'd beat a GT road car. Any track that doesn't require low end stability. Corvettes are notorious for snap oversteer there. But if you took them both to Spa? The GT would win. It's about what they are built to do and where. On a spec sheet they are similar. On a US style track they are similar. But the extra money a GT costs is where they aren't similar at all. The reason the GT is an icon everywhere and the z06 isn't is that it can go anywhere and be fast. Any road anywhere in the world. It's balanced across the entire gamut of roads and conditions. It'll be just as stable on a twisty mountain switchback as it will be in a 100mph sweeper. The Z06 gives up that balance for a stat sheet. It can't really compete everywhere. It's more focused.
@300cmysrt8
@300cmysrt8 2 года назад
@@halycon404 I don't think handling balance is required to be an icon. At least not on this channel. That's the only thing I'd disagree with you on. They had a gmc truck on this channel. What is considered an icon is very much subjective so I won't even try to sway someone's opinion on it. I mean they also had the C4 ZR1 on here. That thing is amazing to me but I'd bet a lot of people hate it. I've heard the GT has great balance though. I can confirm that my car easily oversteers. It's fun though. Lol

The thing about that generation of Ford GT that really resonates with me, is that to this day, twenty years later, it still looks sharp and fresh and aggressive. This really speaks to the design of the original. When you look at the contemporary Ferrari or Lambo, they look dated. The 360 has that hallmark early 2000s round, bubbly styling. When you look at it, you think it looks like an early 2000s car. The GT's design, on the other hand, is timeless.

It was probably worth differentiating the mk1 from the mk3. The mk1 was essentially a race car for the road (in the most literal sense) with only 30 built in street-legal guise. The mk3 was intended to be a road car from the outset and capitalize on the success of the Mk2 (and, subsequently, Mk4). It wasn't quite as tame as the 1st or 2nd gen Ford GTs that would follow, but it was substantially quieter, softer, and more accommodating than the Mk1 road car.

The good news, a friend of mine bought the car. It spent most of its life in his garage or enclosed trailer. Sold it for more than he paid with only 1600 miles on it.
