I have a Ford 1975 Ford 4200 select O speed, If you perform the regular maintenance and up keep, they are awesome. One thing I don't do without pushing in the clutch?inching pedal is going from low to med to high range, If I am in low,1-5, I do just gentle select the gear I want, If I need to go up to Med range, 6-8 I push in the clutch/ inching pedal, select the gear I want and release it just like it was a normal clutch transmission, something I learned from the Ford dealer years ago, it actually is easier on the transmission and not so jerky or jumpy, also when engaging the pto, make sure the engine is a low rpm almost idle, then push it up once the pto is running, this saves on your equipment and drive lines
We’ve got 20 different Select O Speeds. Best way to find parts is from the small salvage yards. They aren’t trying to make a killing off parts. The shifters/shift cable can sometimes get expensive though. In my opinion they are not as bad as a transmission as some people let on. Like anything if it is serviced and operated correctly they last forever. Very handy too. Use one almost everyday in our turkey farming operation. Where are you located?
My Dad was a SOS Ford trained mechanic. He regimented that red belly SOS if used oil changed yearly(no transmissionfilter or oil cooler). And red and blue belly year band adjustment . Also the use of the inching pedal (not clutch). So proper operation and maintenance was very important.
International Harvester in 1952 I think came out with TA which was a shift on the go, but you still had to shift between gears 1-5, but the ta gave a high and low. So IH techniquely had ten gears forward and two reverse also, but it was only realy a partial powershift since you still had to push the clutch in between gears, just not high and low.
I have a 62-64 Ford 4000 Industrial with an end loader. My mechanic said if you treat it nice it will work fine. He said don’t slam between gears. Just shift slowly through the gears. He also said when you change the fluid, don’t use anything except solvent on the filter. No paper and no cloth. He said ANY fibers in the select o speed will cause problems. I’m still learning to drive the thing, but after almost 60 years and lots of hours, it still works fine.
Thanks for the video I watch you guys going to auctions quite a bit. Question for you since you know way more than me. I’m looking at a 1959 ford power master 881 gas ten speed/select o speed. Tractor is in excellent condition and price is just as good. Am I making a mistake to buy this for light acreage maintenance or would you buy one? Can I find parts or am I risking having another lawn ornament if something breaks. Having a hard time finding much good info on this thing. Also looking at show room quality 53 jubilee, what would you choose? Thanks
Very intrested to know the difference between facts and fiction regarding the 6000. We had 2, so think my questions qualifies. I heard from a Ford dealer that the original version was a beefy, powerful version: then management got a memo: couldn't fit into a mounted corn picker. My understanding is that the original had a Borg and Beck powershift. Later purchased by Deere. Originally a real powerhouse tractor reduced to infamy by management. Imagine that. We had a Commander with turbo. Cracked block. I purchased another with rudimentary cab in the late 80's. Input shaft failed. Suprize! Nothing about this tractor was convenient. PTO was terrible. Engine hp was adequate however inadequately applied. Powershift was terrible. What we received was not the original intended. Deere got, ultimately the Borg and Beck powershift. How'd that work for ya? Some had significant success with the Ford diesel 961. Great tractor as was the 8-9000 series. Management missd the boat. Ford is effectively gone- as are the most serious American manufacturers. Minneapolis Moline among the rest. Buy a Deere. Proprietary repair. Got happiness?
I use to work at ford tractor place I was the man who worked on sect o speed's nobody else like to fool with them.l have one I re worked and extra for parts would not have anything else in a 800 series tractor.
I found a ford 2000 select-o-speed for $3000, do you think it is a good buy? I ask them how long its been sitting, they will get back to me on that. What are your thoughts on this and to look for signs of leaks or mechanic issues?
